In Gravity, which lands in theaters this weekend, director Alfonso Cuaron has given new meaning to the "lost in space" theme, and to the very concept of isolation.

It's as much an existential exploration as it is science fiction.

Following an explosion during a space walk, the premise is a human being, floating tiny and unbound, in the limitless, quiet, stark expanse of the cosmos.

Add in Sandra Bullock and George Clooney and what have you got? Critical gold! Check out excerpts from some of the week's top Gravity reviews ...

"The film’ extraordinarily beautiful in its vision of a much larger universe, and it’s slyly honest about our insignificance within it. That’s what makes the ending both awe-inspiring and far-fetched. - Boston Globe

"A great movie is hard to define. So let Gravity do it for you. With enthralling detail, it offers thrills, humor, dazzle, disaster, poetic vision and mythic reach." - Rolling Stone

Sandra Bullock may have been blindsided by Jesse James' rampant infidelity, but she says she's come out of it as well as she possibly could have.

In an interview in the October issue of Vogue, the 49-year-old star briefly talks about her ill-fated five-year marriage, if only to say she's moved on.

"We're all where we're supposed to be," Bullock tells Vogue. "I am exactly where I want to be now. You can't go backward. I'm not going backward."

"I'm grateful that I'm here, blessed to have what I have."

Shortly after she won her Best Actress Oscar for The Blind Side in 2010, news surfaced that her husband was cheating on her with Michelle McGee.

A month later, Bullock filed for divorce.

Two of the most popular movie stars on the planet, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, traveled to Venice together to promote their film Gravity.

After spending time in Clooney's famed villa in Lake Como, the group jumped on a coach bus (yes, coach), and headed off to the Venice Film Festival.

Apparently Clooney, who is known for pranks on set, kept things serious this time, she recalled: "[Gravity] was so hard that pranks had no place."

"There was never down time. How are you going to prank someone who's hanging from a scaffold with 12 wires, rigged up all day?" Bullock said.

"We had a truce at the very get-go because that just wasn't the place to prank."

Here's a look at the film starring the pair:

Sandra Bullock turns 49 years young on Friday.

Given her looks, positive attitude, sense of humor, approachability and infectiously endearing personality, it's no wonder she's become known as America's Sweetheart.

Sexy Sandra

After winning an Academy Award for The Blind Side and being blindsided by Jesse James, Bullock took time off to focus on a much more important role:

Mother to adopted son Louis Bardot.

She's returned to acting with some memorable recent roles (most recently The Heat), and continues to prove she can be as versatile as she is awesome.

We wish her all the best personally and professionally, and can't wait to see what the next phase of her career holds. Happy 49th birthday, Sandy!

Other notable birthdays today: Helen Mirren (68), Kevin Spacey (54), Kate Beckinsale (40), Jeremy Piven (48), Chris Harrison (42) and Mick Jagger (70).

Sandra Bullock appeared on The Tonight Show this week, where she dropped the f-bomb basically 'cause she can. And 'cause it makes her cooler.

The context? Her new movie The Heat and its profanity - there are 190 f-bombs in total, Bullock said, though most of them come from Melissa McCarthy.

"At the end I sort of learn how to," the 48-year-old actress said, explaining that "when you drop them you're just cooler, I'm cooler when I drop them."

Sandra adds that she doesn't talk that way in real life, at least not in front of kids, at which point Leno asked if there were any kids in the audience.

He set 'em up, and Bullock gamely knocked 'em down:

For some, the scariest movie image would be something like zombie ghost dogs jumping out of a haunted shed and eating your face, thus turning you into a zombie ghost dog.

Those people have probably never considered being stranded alone in the infinite darkness of space.

Watch the first Gravity trailer to get an idea of what it might be like, and then try sleeping ever again:

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star as astronauts on their first and last missions, respectively. While on a space walk, their ship explodes, leaving them stranded in space with no communication with Earth.

Gravity is directed by Alfonso Cuarón. It will premiere October 4.

Gravity is the latest "isolation" movie that follows one person's--or in this case two people's--terrifying battles against harsh, stark, nature.

Think Castaway or 127 Hours or any of the Twilight movies (in this case you, the audience member are the one stranded in isolation).

The difference with Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, is that it takes place in space. Everything's way more terrifying in space.

Already the mother of two-year-old son Louis, Oscar winner Sandra Bullock is reportedly adopting a second child ... or at least in the process of trying to.

Sandra and then-husband Jesse James had planned to adopt Louis together, but in the aftermath of their shocking split, she took on sole custody of the boy.

She has planned to expand her brood since adopting Louis back in early 2010, a source revealed: "Sandra has always planned to have more than one child."

"She feels now is a good time for a new baby to be welcomed into the family. Louis is a little young to understand that he is going to be a big brother."

"However, Sandy is trying to get him ready for the transition."

The source adds that Sandra has filed the adoption papers now as it may take a long time to process. She has no preference on the sex of the baby.

"It took her about 18 months to finally get Louis, and there is no time table as to when she will get the second child," the insider said of the adoption.

"Sandy's lawyer told her it could take a year to complete the process. She doesn't care whether or not it's a boy or girl. She just wants a healthy a baby."

In related news, Charlize Theron adopted a baby boy yesterday!

Are Sandra Bullock and director/notorious playboy Brett Ratner engaged in a "dangerous" romance? One tabloid would certainly have you believe it, but no.

This week, In Touch ran a cover with a laughing Bullock and Ratner Photoshopped atop her, with the headline reading, "SANDRA'S RISKY NEW ROMANCE."

The caption: "Two years after her divorce, she's opened her heart and learned to trust again. But will dating Hollywood's biggest player end in heartbreak?"

Turns out the only thing Bullock is doing with Ratner is issuing statements.

Risky New Fake Romance!

Bullock and Ratner issued the following statement to The Huffington Post, deriding the magazine while firmly denying any claims of a romantic connection:

"We think that it's incredibly sad that in these times, this magazine would resort to a complete fabrication, solely for financial gain," the twosome said.

"There is not a shred of accuracy in their story ... We have not seen nor spoken to each for over a decade. We both had a great time after the Oscars."

"Just not with each other."
