American Idol brought out some big names for its Top 5 performance show last night.

Ariana Grande, Zooey Deschanel and Jason Mraz all showed up during the two-hour broadcast, but the episode, of course, centered on a quintet of singers who one hope to strike it big:

Sam Woolf, Caleb Johnson, Jessica Meuse, Alex Preston and Jena Irene.

The finalists sang two tracks apiece, each of which was selected by viewers at home. Artists covered included Aerosmith, Christina Perri and The Rolling Stones.

Viewers were treated to twice the American Idol Top 6 last night, as each contestant sang a pair of songs in hopes of surviving another week.

One had to be country, one had to be rock and both had to impress judges and fans alike.

Who stood out for the right reasons?

Caleb Johnson was right at home covering a Black Crowes classic, and also surprised us by doing Carrie Underwood proud on a version of “Undo It.”

Conversely, C.J. Harris struggled to stay in tune and will likely be on tonight's chopping block.

And we finally have a clear-cut favorite on American Idol!

The Top 7 put on the best performance night of Season 13 Wednesday, as producers came up with a first-ever twist for the long-running competition:

The finalists selected tracks for one another, proving how tight-knit they actually are by refusing to sabotage anyone's performance with a difficult or eccentric song.

That's no fun, as know, but it was loads of fun to watch Jene Irene close the show with a cover of "Creep." It earned a standing ovation (from everyone except a focused Harry Connick Jr.) and it propeled her to the front of this mostly mundane pack.

Watch all seven solo performances now:

The pressure was on for the remaining American Idol finalists this week.

Following Sam Woolf's save last week, there will be more more Season 13 pardons. This is now it. If the viewers say so, you are out of the competition.

With that scary knowledge secure in their minds, the Top 8 took the stage last night (with David Cook as a mentor) and belted out covers of classics from the 1980s.

How did they fare? It wasn't the most memorable performance episode of all-time, with many hopefuls choosing obvious tracks and no one really blowing us away.

But you can cycle through all eight solo auditions now and then vote on your favorite:

Caleb Johnson - "Faithfully"
Caleb Johnson is on quite the American Idol journey. How did he fare on "Faithfully?"

American Idol went back to the beginning last night, as the eight remaining finalists performed songs from some of their original auditions.

And it was easily the best performance episode of Season 13.

Two contestants impressed us with original songs, while a couple others re-arranged their classics, made them their own... and left us scrambling over to iTunes to download.

Who stood out the most? Who could be in danger of elimination? Click, listen and be awed by the Top 8 now:

Jena Irene - "Rolling in the Deep"
Jena Irene tries to make Adele proud with this American Idol audition. She's Rolling in the Deep.

Tough choice, huh? But it must be made: Who put on the best performance?

Note to American Idol producers:

You don't need to keep churning out theme nights every week. It's not, like a law or anything.

Following last week's vague performance theme of Hits Since the Year 2010, viewers were treated to Rickey Minor and company playing a key role Wednesday evening for "I’m With the Band!" night.

It was random... but was it entertaining?

Yes, if you’re name was Alex Preston or Majesty Rose. These hopeful covered a couple classics and did No Dobut and Florence + The Machine, respectively, proud.

Who else stood out? Who will be on the chopping block tonight? Click through all nine performances here and then vote below:

WHO DID THE BEST JOB?

The American Idol Top 10 were on the Edge of Glory last night.

They were Pumped Up for Kicks, while telling the Story of [Their Lives] and hoping the viewers would see them as Perfect.

Yes, Sam Woolf, M.K. Nobilette and company went contemporary on the latest performance episode, belting out songs made it big in the past three years.

We heard covers of One Direction, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and many other familiar artists, meaning viewers could easily compare these covers to their original versions.

Click through each performance now and then decide...

Alex Preston - "Story of My Life"
Alex Preston sure hopes the story of HIS life includes an American Idol Season 13 victory.

... who did the best job?

Grab your popcorn, readers.

American Idol took us to the movies last night.

The remaining Season 13 contestants took to the stage on Wednesday and sang famous songs from films, with the Top 11 unafraid to tackle some major artists.

One went after Adele. Another Bob Dylan. Another Idina Menzel (or is it pronounced Adel Dazim?).

Did the hopefuls do these stars justice? Or butcher the heck out of a few classics? Watch and listen now:

Sam Woolf - "Come Together"
Everyone come together... right now! So sings Sam Woolf for this American Idol audition.

Who is for sure safe? Who may be on the chopping block tonight?

Let's all ignore the fact that Jennifer Lopez took a bite from a deviled egg straight out of Ryan Seacrest's hand tonight and get right to the American Idol performance review, shall we?

The dozen contestants remaining sang singles that reminded them of home this week, a rather broad assignment that led to covers of John Mayer, Dido and even J. Lo herself.

Yes, Emily Piriz was brave enough to make like one of the judges.

How did she fare? Well... she got loud. Listen to all 12 hopefuls sing for their American Idol lives now:

Emily Piriz - "Let's Get Loud"
Emily Piriz wants everyone to get loud. Come on, American Idol fans!!!

We are officially off and running singing on American Idol Season 13.

The finalists took to the stage as a group for the first time on Wednesday and the results were decidedly mixed.

Things looked bleak throughout the opening hour, with a case of the nerves seemingly hitting a number of contestants.

But a handful in the back half showed promise and the judges continued to excel, giving us hope that all is not lost for this once-great competition.

Watch all 13 performances now and then cast your vote below:
