Apparently all it took to put a big smile on the face of Robert Pattinson was a trip to The Big Apple.

As previously reported, the actor Robert Pattinson laughed through an appearance on The Daily Show last night. He even ate some ice cream with host Jon Stewart.

He then attended the red carpet premiere of Cosmopolis.

Today, meanwhile, Pattinson rang the opening bell of the New York City Stock Exchange alongside director David Cronenberg. Watch them do so here:

What is Pattinson's state of mind these days? He may be crying on the inside, but witnesses at the Cosmopolis afterparty last night said Rob "looked happy."

"He was friendly and spoke to everyone that said hello," an insider tells Us Weekly, adding that Pattinson drank a bit and smoked electric cigarettes on the rooftop bar of Dream Downtown. "There was no talk of Kristen. He was smiling and laughing a lot."

After laying low for awhile, following the heartbreak brought on by Kristen Stewart's affair, Robert Pattinson pulled double public duty last night.

First, he appeared as a guest on The Daily Show, eating ice cream with Jon Stewart and refraining from any bashing of his lying ex-girlfriend.

Pattinson then went straight from there to he Museum Of Modern Art in New York City, where he walked the red carpet of the Cosmopolis, which opens in select cities this Friday.

The opportunity was there for Robert Pattinson last night.

Making his first public appearance since news of Kristen Stewart cheating on him with Rupert Sanders broke, the actor appeared as a guest on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

And the host good-naturedly broached the topic right away, asking Pattinson what he's been up to and adding: "Are you all right? Is everything OK? I'm worried about you."

Did Rob take the bait? Did he throw Stewart under a bus on national television?

Nope.

"My biggest problem in my life is I'm cheap, and I didn't hire a publicist," Pattinson replied. "I'm going to hire a publicist."

Stewart then broke out some Ben & Jerry's and tried to bond with the handsome star.

"Now, we're just a couple of gals talking," Stewart said. "All right... Tell me everything."

Pattinson went along with the joke, laughing about splitting open his Spanx and only grew serious after Stewart noted that - for young people - going through a breakup often feels like the end of the world. To this, Robert simply responded:

"It is."

But he proceeded to tell the audience it was okay and no one should feel sorry for him. Talk then turned to the film Pattinson was there to promote, Cosmopolis.

It was a deftly handled interview on both sides, with the Stewart-sized elephant in the room acknowledged in a funny, classy way... given the circumstances. Watch the full exchange below.

Robert Pattinson will be a guest on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart tonight. And while most of the free world is excited over the actor's first public appearance since his heart was torn to shreds by Kristen Stewart, sources say at least one person is "very, very nervous" about how it will go:

“She’s confident that Robert, who has always been such a private person about his personal life, will keep quiet over the cheating scandal," an insider tells Radar Online. "But she does have some concerns that Stewart might poke fun at the situation in an attempt to get Robert to open up."

Let's hope so, right?!?

The status of Robsten remains unclear, although multiple outlets confirm the couple is no longer living together in Los Angeles.

One report claims Pattinson has been drunk dialing his cheating costar, while another (anonymous) source tells Radar that Robert is legitimately torn over the pair's future.

"He's starting to wind down and really think about what he’s going to do regarding his relationship with Kristen. He goes back and forth... He has a lot to think about and hasn’t decided either way right now.”

This has suddenly become more awkward than exciting.

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly features Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in an embrace. No, they haven't made up. They are simply in character as Edward and Bella in Breaking Dawn Part 2.

Pattinson tells the magazine that this installment of The Twilight Saga is "stranger than all the other films put together," a comment that takes on new meaning in light of Stewart's cheating scandal.

Summit Entertainment, however, has said that promotion of the blockbuster will continue as planned, while director Bill Condon simply urges fans to show the ex-couple some respect.

The public will hear from Robert Pattinson for the first time since his split from Kristen Stewart when he's a guest on The Daily Show this Monday.

But sources tell In Touch Weekly that Stewart herself has been hearing from the actor often since news of her affair with Rupert Sanders went public. How so?

"He’s been drunk dialing Kristen," an insider claims.

Friends tell the magazine that Rob has "been drinking like crazy," since the split, which is actually the second time this assertion has been made.

So, assuming this story is valid, what actually happens when Pattinson gets Stewart on the line? A lot of "dead silences," this Robsten mole says.

Another supposed know-it-all adds that Rob is clearly considering some kind of reconciliation, but "his friends are working hard to make sure that he doesn’t go back to her."
