After years and years of notoriety as the biggest political mistress since Monica Lewinsky, Rielle Hunter apologized this week for her affair with John Edwards.

"I behaved badly," she said. "Infidelity is wrong."

Indeed. But does that make her at all sincere?

Rielle Hunter says her publisher came up with the idea of going through her book to make a revised version annotating all of her regrets and mistakes.

She did so, and plenty of people have commended her for her bravery, honesty and the like. Yet some aren't finding her remorse the least bit convincing.

It's that I don't find her remorse convincing.

She says the right things, and comes across like someone trying to come across as contrite, but here are several reasons some feel she's not ...

Rielle Hunter.

The mere mention of John Edwards' mistress elicits everything from eye-rolls to rage among the public. She is acknowledging this publicly, years later.

While hoping to move copies of her book, of course.

Rielle Hunter, who gave birth to John Edwards' love child Frances Quinn Hunter in between his '04 and '08 presidential bids, will go down in history.

As the woman he cheated on and tried to cover up his affair with while running for the highest office in the world, she is the poster woman for infidelity.

Her lack of remorse - especially given that John's now-deceased wife Elizabeth Edwards was fighting cancer - did not exactly help her approval ratings.

She's aware of this, at long last, claiming she "behaved badly" and was "selfish" among other things in the "revised" edition of her book, which includes the mea culpa:

When Cate Edwards learned that her father, former presidential candidate John Edwards, was cheating on her mother, Elizabeth, she was crushed.

The 31-year-old daughter of the disgraced former U.S. senator adds that he personally admitted to her that he had had an affair with Rielle Hunter.

“I guess he and my mom decided that that was how it needed to be done. So yeah, I was devastated. And I was very disappointed," Edwards said.

"I mean, these are my parents. I had grown up with a lot of love in my family. And it was hard to see them go through this,” Cate said in an interview on Today.

Asked if she was mad, Cate Edwards said, “Yeah, of course.”

Disgraced politician John Edwards suffered a heart attack scare in February and has been warned by his doctors to stop drinking, a tabloid report claims.

Edwards "was at home when he started to feel pain and tightness in his chest,” a family source told the National Enquirer, the thorn in his side for years.

The magazine claims that (who else) the 59-year-old former Senator’s girlfriend and baby mama, Rielle Hunter, came to the rescue in his time of need.

John and his long-time mistress were actually together after his wife Elizabeth died, but Hunter's explosive tell-all book about their affair torpedoed the romance.

Nevertheless, Rielle and Quinn Hunter are said to be moving close to him.

Rielle Hunter's new tell-all What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter, and Me contains many seedy revelations, but this one may take the cake.

Elizabeth Edwards kept a photo of John Edwards and Rielle as her screensaver to not-so-subtly torment her cheating husband, Hunter claims in her book.

In a book excerpt printed in People, Hunter, who bashes Elizabeth Edwards repeatedly, described how the cancer-stricken wife first reacted to their affair:

  • Elizabeth Edwards Pic
  • Smilin' John
  • A Rielle Pic

"Elizabeth requested all the tapes (I’d made of the campaign, as a videographer). On one tape she saw Johnny walking into a room and his reaction to seeing me."

"She apparently told him that he never once looked at her the way he looked at me. So she took that bit and put it on her computer as a screen saver."

"The poor woman thought she was tormenting her cheating husband, using the image as a painful reminder of his foolish, political career-killing indiscretion."

"But in an attempt to punish John, Elizabeth was ultimately just tormenting herself."

If one can be tormented in the afterlife by events here on Earth, she likely is by Hunter and her book. Especially this excerpt near the end:

“I’m still in love with John. That didn’t go away, shockingly enough. Marriage? I have no idea. I’m not a big fan of the institution, but never say never.”

Except that Rielle Hunter and John Edwards just broke up. Oh well.

Rielle Hunter was eviscerated on The View yesterday as the gabfest panel, in particular Whoopi Goldberg, went nuclear on John Edwards' mistress.

"In your book, you trash a dead lady," Goldberg stated, referring to Rielle Hunter's new tell-all book, in which she bashes Elizabeth Edwards often.

"That was kind of crappy."

Regarding What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me, the author responded, "I wrote to tell the truth. I was truthful about their dynamic."

In the interview, Hunter acknowledged that despite recent photos of the happy family on a North Carolina beach, she broke up with John Edwards.

Asked if the split was caused by her memoir, Rielle dodged. "I don't want to hide any more," she said. "It's hard under media scrutiny, it takes a toll."

The mother of Edwards' love child spent a good part of the interview defending herself. "I'm not a mistress, I'm a mom," Rielle Hunter insisted.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck wasn't buying it: "Truth be told, you were a mistress."

Less than a week after saying she was still together with John Edwards, Rielle Hunter now says she and the disgraced politician are no longer a couple.

Apparently they broke up within the last few days.

"We are a family, but as of the end of last week, John Edwards and I are no longer a couple," she said on today's Good Morning America. "Not at all."

Rielle Hunter, who has a daughter, Quinn, 4, with John, said she still loves the two-time presidential candidate, who was seen at her beach house last week.

As for whether that feeling is mutual, "You have to ask him," said Hunter, whose covert relationship with Edwards was exposed and led to his political downfall.

"I really think he does."

"I fell in love with a married man and became something I wasn't in order to be with him," Hunter gushed last week, while promoting her new book.

Rielle would not reveal who initiated the split with the former U.S. Senator from North Carolina, only, "We decided to end it. It's hard. It's painful."

Rielle Hunter says she's unsure if she and John Edwards will wed one day, but she's forever grateful for him and for their daughter. He's also hot.

After years of secrecy, Rielle - the mistress whose relationship with John ended his bid for the presidency and his marriage - is coming clean now.

"I fell in love with a married man and became something I wasn't in order to be with him," Hunter tells People, while promoting her new book.

What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me details the couple's past ... and present. "We're still together as a couple," she says.

Rielle, whose book claims John had other affairs and paints his late wife as a bona fide crazy person, won't predict the future, however.

"Marriage? Have no idea," she says. "I'm not a big fan of the institution but never say never." Hunter, 48, sees Edwards, 59, regularly in any case.

"Sometimes five days in a row. Sometimes every two weeks. It varies ... he'll play with [Quinn] for hours. He empties the dishwasher. He cooks."

"Johnny and I have been through so much awfulness with the wrath of America directed at us," she adds. "But I followed my heart and I don't regret it."

The main reason? "It produced the greatest love in my entire life: Frances Quinn," she writes of the couple's love child, now four years old.

Of their sex life, she says, "I don't think that's anyone's business." But, when asked if she thinks the former U.S. Senator is hot, she says "I do!"

Brings a tear to your eye, no?

In the forthcoming Rielle Hunter book, What Really Happened, John Edwards' crazy mistress says that the first time they had sex was pretty darn good.

Okay, we're underselling it. It was the most extraordinary night of her life!

Hunter's bombshell memoir was rejected by all major publishers and is being released on Tuesday, June 26 by a small Dallas-based company, Ben Bella.

That's a week away, but a deluge of excerpts released in advance of the book tell you all you need to know ... and plenty you probably wish you did not.

Edwards, J.

After meeting Edwards at the Regency Hotel in New York City during his run for president, Rielle went to his hotel room strictly for professional reasons.

But NOT FOR LONG!

"The connection I felt when I walked in the door had only grown and the amount of energy between us was huge and unstoppable," Hunter reveals.

"A moment came while we were talking when something clicked and I surrendered. I took off my teacher hat, let go of all my resistance to him and let him lead."

"And lead he did. He led me toward the most extraordinary night of my life. There was a lot of talk, a lot of laughter and zero sleep."
