Reed Grimm kicked off the first live American Idol show with serious energy. Or serious drumming, we should say.

Indeed, the confident contestant didn't just show off his Jagger-like moves in this Adam Levine cover; he also demonstrated his versatility - drawing comparisons to Casey Abrams in the process - by moving around on stage and taking on a drum set at one point. It was different and entertaining, that's for sure.

Was it on par vocally with Phillips Phillips? No. But we expect Grimm to advance to the finals. Will you be voting for him?

American Idol has named its final 12 men on season 11.

Okay, yes, there will actually be 13 men, but if the show is keeping the final semifinalist secret until he performs on Tuesday night then he can blame producers for being left off this list.

While we still have a slew of live auditions to go through, it's never too early to start choosing sides. Are you going with the 15-year old dubbed the next Justin Bieber? The guy so nice his family named him twice?

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE MALE SEMIFINALIST?

For the second consecutive night, American Idol delivered a two-hour episode on Thursday, testing the patience of even the most loyal viewers.

That's A LOT of Ryan Seacrest.

But the quartet of Reed Grimm, Elise Testone, Haley Johnson and Eben Franckewitz made it worthwhile this time around, making like the Rat Pack for a rendition of "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes." Our favorite part by far? Eben trying to dance, with an emphasis on the word trying.

Each member of the group advanced to the final 40, earning a standing ovation for this performance. Check it out now:

Up until last night, Reed Grimm appeared to be one of the most confident American Idol contestants in recent memory. The guy initially auditioned with the Family Matters theme song, after all.

But the season 11 contestant - who grew up on stage, singing alongside his family - showed some panic in Hollywood, as he was told shortly before it was time to perform that he could not sing a capella as he had planned. He had to include the band.

Cue a call to Reed's mother and concern over whether or not he even belonged on the competition... and then cue what we believe to be an Idol first. Has anyone else ever played the drums for an audition before? Grimm did so here, rather well, to boot, earning a comparison from Randy to Casey Abrams.

Reed received approval for the next round, and he'll join a few other standouts from last night there, including Joshua Ledet, Colton Dixon and Jen Hirsch.

Family matters to Reed Grimm. The 26-year old has been singing on stage with his parents and siblings since the age of two.

So it was only appropriate that the American Idol hopeful auditioned last night via the Family Matters theme song, harmonizing and scatting his way through this unique track, much to the amusement of all three judges.

Steve Tyler referred to Grimm as "genius." Randy Jackson said he was "enthralled" by the performance. Watch it for yourself now and come up with your own description:

Grimm, of course, was not the only standout in Pittsburgh. We also were huge fans of Hallie Day and Eben Franckewitz.
