It's been 18 years since Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum (with help from Randy Quaid) saved the world from aliens in the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, a film which has grossed more than $800 million worldwide.

With talks of a sequel in the works, and with several of the original film's principal cast set to reprise their roles, we thought we'd take a walk down memory lane to see where the cast of Independence Day is now.

Will Smith
Will Smith is still making movies, though none have grossed as much worldwide as Independence Day. He WAS nominated for two Oscars, though, so that doesn't suck.

Will Smith, of course, has gone on to great success in his post-pilot days, earning two Oscar nominations and making headlines for his daughter Willow Smith's behavior.

Canada has denied actor Randy Quaid's request for permanent residency, according to reports, two years after he applied for refugee status in the county.

The Refugee Protection Division also refused to let Quaid reinstate a claim in which he alleged he and his wife were the target of Hollywood "star-whackers."

The Quaids have appealed to Federal Court saying their lives are still in danger.

"Organized crime and its victims are serious issues and can not be tossed off until the claim is heard," the couple stated in an application for judicial review.

Randy Quaid says it would be a "hoot" to tour with Charlie Sheen. Not sure that will ever happen, but it would indeed be a hoot, among other things.

Quaid floated this screwball proposition to Canada's Globe and Mail this week. "It's apropos to his situation, and apropos to my situation," he said.

Whatever you say, Randy. Whatever you say.

What a Nut Job

OPENING ACT? This would be the one way to make Sheen's tour crazier.

Quaid, who co-starred with Charlie in Major League II, No Man's Land and The Wraith, wouldn't be able to do U.S. shows, of course. Just Canada.

Randy and his insane wife Evi are living in Vancouver, having sought refugee status there in 2010. This was after they went completely off the rails.

Still, Randy tells E! he'd tour with Sheen in a second, and he'd open with the Johnny Cash song, "Will We Be Together Then," followed by "Star Whackers."

On the latter, penned by Quaid, Sheen would join him on backing vocals: "That'd be great: Have Charlie come out [and sing], 'I'm talking about Whackers!'"

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, there are only so many torpedoes of truth to go around. While Charlie has had special guests, his rep says:

"We're not having any opening acts. The tour is proceeding wonderfully; there are no plans to have an opening act or have Randy participating."

Everything is a conspiracy if you're Randy and Evi Quaid.

The insane pair, having already alleged that the Star Whackers are coming to do them in (just as they have Heath Ledger, David Carradine and others), now say that gossip website Radar Online is a front owned and operated by the police.

BRINGING THE CRAZY: No one does it like the Quaids.

"Radar Online is owned by the police," she told Esquire. "They called the Dairy Queen in Marfa, Texas, to spread rumors about us when we lived there."

The celebrity gossip site denies it is owned by the police.

In an length interview, the Quaids talk about why they are seeking asylum in Canada from charges in California and about the roving gang of hooligans who, they say, are killing and/or trying to ruin the lives of their celebrity friends.

Increasingly crazy actor Randy Quaid says if it wasn’t for Canada's refugee system, he and his wife Evi would be dead. Thanks to the star whackers, natch.

Quaid made this comment as he entered his immigration and refugee board hearing in Vancouver, B.C. The couple faces an outstanding warrant in the U.S.

"If it wasn't for Canada's refuge system, my wife and I would be dead," Randy told CKNW Vancouver, adding that he "feels good" despite the drama.

BRINGING THE CRAZY: No one does it like the Quaids.

The strange couple, wanted for squatting in a home they used to own in California, is claiming refugee status because of a bizarre theory that they're in danger.

According to Randy and Evi Quaid, a random, roving gang of hooligans is hell-bent on ruining the lives of and/or murdering famous people such as themselves.

The situation became even stranger after the board determined that Evi Quaid could claim Canadian citizenship because her father was born in Canada.

Today's hearing will establish if Randy may remain in Canada. We sort of hope he can, for his sake, even if it'd be more entertaining if he came home.

"Heath was an athlete. He played Australian football. He was robust." - Randy Quaid on why the late actor Heath Ledger was a likely victim of the "Star Whackers."

This guy is awesome, as are the news programs that put him on the air. Today, the insane actor hit The Early Show to explain missing his court date (again).

Randy and Evi Quaid, who face burglary charges in California, are seeking refuge in Canada, saying they've been "racketeered on" and people are after them:

According to the Quaids, a mysterious, rag tag group of hooligans he terms the "Star Whackers" are targeting celebrities, "decimating" them literally or otherwise:

"I've had eight friends of mine who have either died mysteriously or had scandals surrounding them in recent years, and this is what I'm talking about."

"They've manipulated the system, the court system to have us falsely arrested, to make it impossible for us to operate on a daily basis in every basic way."

Good to know Randy. Very good to know.

Just when you think Randy and Evi Quaid can't get crazier ...

In what may end up being a very costly move, the fugitive couple once again didn't appear in court, this time for their felony vandalism arraignment Tuesday in Santa Barbara, Calif. Evi's bail amount of $500,000 was forfeited as a result.

A new bench warrant has been issued for Evi Quaid. Sigh ...

Randy and Evi Quaid insist they are not crazy.

Evi, whose probation had been revoked for her previous hotel bill fraud case, is expected to face jail time. If she ever sets foot back in the U.S., that is.

Both the Quaids accused of squatting in and causing damage to a Montecito, Calif., home they used to own. A realtor found them crashing there. Hilarious.

They are currently seeking refugee status in Canada.

A few days after they were set free in Canada, Randy and Evi Quaid sat down with Good Morning America today and gave an epic interview in which they stated:

  • An estate planner is trying to kill them.
  • Heath Ledger was possibly murdered.
  • Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan could be next.

  • Mel Gibson recorded a series of hate-spewing voicemails because he was drugged.
  • Oksana Grigorieva was sent to do the actor in financially.
  • Dennis Quaid makes really bad movies.

Randy and Evi Quaid, who were arrested in Canada last week after border security realized the pair was wanted in California for missing a court date, are free.

Why? Because she informed their immigration board that she is a Canadian citizen. Naturally! She was born in Vermont, but... this is Evi Quaid, so who knows.

Now free to roam the Great White North, the Quaids say they are seeking refuge status north of the border because they FEAR FOR THEIR LIVES IN THE U.S.

Evi Quaid may not know where she is right now, but she's happy.

Randy, who was born in Texas, still must meet with the Immigration and Refugee Board to determine whether he'll be allowed to lawfully stay in Canada.

In the meantime, he posted $1 million bond to keep them out of custody in Santa Barbara, Ca., pending their appearance at a November 2 hearing there.

The Quaids faces felony vandalism charges for allegedly squatting in - and doing significant damage to - a Montecito home they used to own. Obviously.

Actor Randy Quaid and his insane wife Evi are definitely living in their own world, but it's an entertaining one for us to catch a glimpse of from time to time.

Wanted by authorities in California, the fugitives were arrested Friday in Vancouver. They want to stay in Canada as refugees. Truth is stranger than fiction.

Randy and Evi Quaid say they are being persecuted south of the border.

REFUGEES: That's what the Quaids aspire to be now.

Evi Quaid pleaded for a Canadian immigration adjudicator not to return them to the U.S. She said her husband's friends, such as David Carradine and Heath Ledger, have died under suspicious circumstances and worries Randy will be next.

We are not making this up.

"We feel our lives are in danger," she said, complaining of high blood pressure and adding that Randy Quaid's mother is in hospital due to stress over all this.

Monday, California officials issued arrest warrants for Randy, 60, and Evi, 47, after they failed to appear in court for allegedly squatting in a home illegally.
