Rainn Wilson took to Twitter to apologize after an admittedly "poorly conceived" joke about getting date raped to Led Zeppelin yielded some online criticism.

The man behind so many great Office quotes, whose Twitter is usually a must-read, wasted no time in realizing the error of his tweet-first, think-later ways.

"Apparently my poorly conceived date-rape tweet upset a lot of folks," he wrote this morning. "Not a good topic to joke about. Sorry & won't do that again."

Starting late Monday, and leaking into the early hours of today, a minor uproar mounted against the comedic actor's seemingly out of character comment.

What was the offending Tweet-missive? "If I were ever date raped I would want it to be to 'Whole Lotta Love' by Led Zeppelin," the 46-year-old wrote.

Not hard to see how that didn't go over well. However, Rainn has since deleted the Tweet, replacing it with his apology, so ... lesson learned, we're guessing.

Should Wilson have apologized?

Okay, so in real life, Rainn Wilson isn't nearly as geeky as his character from The Office. In fact, judging by this recent picture from the Sundance Film Festival, he looks downright normal - maybe even a little cool.

But deep down, Wilson just can't rid himself of his inner suck-up, the part of him that will always identify with his Office alter ego, the neurotic and painfully annoying (yet hilarious) Dwight K. Schrute, and long for the approval of his supervisor at Dunder-Mifflin.

So it's no wonder that as he strums a tune on his guitar, Wilson can't help but dedicate it to his reason for living: his boss, Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell)...

If only Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) were around to see this pathetic display of ass-kissing and serenading. But she's probably at the reception desk.
