Tommy Chong is defending daughter Rae Dawn Chong following her controversial comments about Oprah Winfrey during an interview last week.

Rae Dawn mused that O is an ugly, brown-nosing "biotch" who would have been a "field n--ger" back in the day ... not the more prized "house n--ger."

Tommy says she's just being honest, because that's just how it was:

"She said back in the day Oprah would be working in the field because shes not that beautiful  ... whereas if you're beautiful, you're part of the master's bedroom."

Rae Dawn Chong has issued a bizarre statement explaining her slam of Oprah Winfrey earlier this week, claiming it was all a compliment in context.

"I swear I did not JUST say O was a field N and I was making a point about America during slave times ... and I stand behind what I said but out of context it is bad."

Basically, Chong feels that O is basically self-centered fat "biotch" who would have likely been a "field n--gger" back in the slavery days ... seriously.

Makes Terrence Howard's remarks on Oprah's tig ol' bitties seem tame.

Appearing on Matty P's Radio Happy Hour, Chong talked about how her personal relationship with Winfrey went from good to bad (very bad) in a hurry.

Rae Dawn says Oprah was "lovely" on The Color Purple set in '85, but shortly thereafter, when she moved on to Commando, O became "a total biotch."
