Tasked with singing a song that was released the year of her birth, Pia Toscano chose Whitney Houston's "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" last night.

Prior to taking the stage and wowing the judges yet again ("You are why this show is called American Idol," Steven said), we learned via montage that Pia has been covering classics since she was young.

A home video of her belting out "I Will Always Love You" at the age of three or four makes it clear: this young woman was born to sing a ballad on this stage. With a faster tempo than past singles, though, Toscano proves here that she has incredible range. Watch in awe:

Making an apt statement, Pia Toscano chose a Celine Dion classic last night and covered "All By Myself" during the first night on stage for the American Idol finalists.

To many, including the judges, this New York native is all by herself atop the current leaderboard.

Toscano's rendition almost brought Jennifer Lopez to tears, while the audience rose up to give Pia a standing ovation during a soaring, sterling chorus. This woman knows how to sing a ballad, that much is certain. Watch her do so now:

She seemingly came out of nowhere, but Pia Toscano is here to stay.

The American Idol finalist, who received little air time prior to last week's sterling rendition of "I'll Stand By You," was thrust to the forefront of the competition after earning the first standing ovation of the season from the judges for her semifinal performance.

"I felt like I never really showed all that I could do on the show, and I'm so happy that I did save it for when it counted," Pia told MTV at last week's top 13 party. "I've grown so much as a person and as a vocalist throughout this competition, and I'm so happy that that was my moment to shine."

So, what can viewers expect to hear next from the artist, who will perform live tomorrow night? She says:

"I definitely want to have those big ballads. Since I was a little girl, I've always taken to those huge voices: Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey. So I definitely want to bring that back. But I also want to have those fun dance hits as well."

Do you hear that sound, Jacob Lusk? It's the beautiful voice of Pia Toscano, and it's coming for your title as Early American Idol Favorite.

This 21-year old from New York stood proudly at the microphone during last night's semifinal round and belted out a version of The Pretenders "I'll Stand By You." Finishing with a powerful flourish, she earned the first standing ovation of the season from Steven, J. Lo and Randy.

"That was unbelievable," the Dawg gushed afterward. "That's how you do it!"
