Following a record 132 million votes, performances from Neil Diamond, Rihanna and Aerosmith and a proposal, American Idol crowned a season 11 champion tonight.

Was it ballad singer extraordinaire Jessica Sanchez? Or Dave Matthews prototype Phillip Phillips? Unlike Ryan Seacrest, we won't keep you in suspense for very long. The winner is...

American Idol Finalists

PHILLIP PHILLIPS!

Not exactly a shocker, huh? The guitar-playing crooner was considered a favorite from his very first audition, considering his similar qualities to every other American Idol champion of the past five seasons.

Jessica appeared genuinely happy for Phillip upon hearing the announcement, as Ryan handed Phillip his guitar, Phillips took the crowd "Home" and eventually dissolved into tears, heading into the crowd to hug his parents.

Did Phillip Phillips deserve to win?

One episode. Two finalists. Three songs.

Phillip Phillips squared off against Jessica Sanchez tonight, with the American Idol Season 11 crown at stake. Each contestant was tasked with singing a trio of tracks:

  1. Simon Fuller's selections: Jessica Sanchez, “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston; Phillip Phillips, “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King
  2. A favorite from earlier in the season: Jessica Sanchez in no heels, “The Prayer” by Celine Dion; Phillip Phillips, “Movin’ Out” by Billy Joel
  3. A potential winning single: Jessica Sanchez, “Change Nothing;" Phillip Phillips, “Home”

WHO SHOULD WIN?

We're down to two on American Idol. The final two. Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez.

One is a young white male who is easy on the eyes and plays the guitar. In other words: the same exact pedigree as the last four winners.

The other has a beautiful voice and hasn't been afraid all year long of tacking such major artists as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. She's responsible for the single most memorable American Idol performance of the season.

Either would be a worthy champion. Only one will wear the crown next Thursday night.

Who do you want it to be?

Might the success of Phillip Phillips on American Idol be jeopardizing his health? Without a doubt, YES, according to the singer's doctors.

TMZ reports that the finalist's physicians are adamant: Phillips needs surgery to repair a kidney issue as soon as possible. His family doctor even spent the entire day last Saturday - during Phillip's Idol-sponsored trip home to Georgia - by the contestant's side.

But Phillips would be sidelines for six weeks if he underwent the recommended procedure, so he is choosing to soldier on through at least next Thursday's American Idol finale.

In the meantime, Phillip is simply taking medication, but that's also resulting in dry mouth and possibly impacting his singing. Either way, though, win or lose, the talented young man's journey will come to an end in one week.

Who do you think should win American Idol?

I love you guys so much because you have the courage to have a dream.

That's what Steven Tyler told the remaining three American Idol contestants tonight. Alas, for one of Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet, the dream is now over. So... following a painful Ice Age 3 tie-in and a performance by Adam Lambert, who got voted out of season 11?

Idol Final 3

JOSHUA LEDET!

The talented crooner takes it very well and even brings his mom on stage as he sings farewell via "Man's Man's Man's World."

This leaves Jessica Sanchez, likely the best voice of the season, and Phillip Phillips, the obligatory cute-white-guy-with-a-guitar-who-wins-every-season, to square off on next week's finale.

Do you think Ledet deserved to be voted off?

First, the American Idol finalists listened to the judges last night.

Then, they were given the freedom to select their own songs.

Finally, Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet were tasked with a cover by Jimmy Iovine, closing a busy evening with the following three performances. Which did you like best?

-------------------------------------------

Joshua Ledet was given a Mary J. Blige track, "No More Drama." Watch and listen and compare now to his take on John Lennon.

Jessica Sanchez went old school with "I'll Be There," a single made famous by the Jackson 5 and then even more famous by Mariah Carey.

Phillip Phillips then went romantic with Bob Seger' "We've Got Tonight," proving that he doesn't always need a guitar in his hands.

WHICH OPENING PERFORMANCE DID YOU LIKE BEST?

First, the American Idol finalists took on to California last night, covering singles by artists or bands that hailed from the Golden State.

Then, for their next quartet of songs, Phillip Phillips, Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez took on tracks they wished they, themselves, had written. A very odd theme, no doubt? But did it lead to any memorable performances? You tell us...

Phillip Phillips made like Damien Rice on "Volcano," breaking out his guitar like usual and following up "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" with this take:

Hollie Cavanagh slowed things down for a version of the Bonnie Raiit hit "I Can't Make You Love Me." Audio only, folks, we apologize:

James Brown, meet Joshua Ledet. This finalist became the latest Idol to turn "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" into his own:

Jessica Sanchez ended the evening with a powerful version of "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." Compare it now to her performance of "Steal Away."

WHICH OF THESE PERFORMANCES DID YOU LIKE BEST?

Note to American Idol: Who the heck is picking the weekly themes this season?!?

With the assignments growing more and more random, last night the final four finalists - Phillip Phillips, Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez - were tasked with singing on track by a California native band or artist; and one they wish they had written themselves.

Ummm... okay. Let's rundown the first set of performances and then let's vote on our favorite, shall we?

Phillip Phillips took on CCR and asked viewers one simply question: "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" Well, have you?!?

Hollie Cavanagh went on a Journey via one of this group's all-time classics. Did she do justice to "Faithfully?"

We only have the audio for Joshua Ledet and his take on "You Raise Me Up," but it's easy enough to hear this man's talent, isn't it?

Jessica Sanchez wrapped up this portion of the evening with Etta James "Steal Away." What do you think of the cover?
