Oscar Pistorius took the witness stand on Monday in South Africa and apologized to the family of Reeva Steenkamp for shooting her to death last year.

Weeping and speaking in a quavering voice, he described a life of insomnia and panic since the night of February 14, 2013, when he killed his girlfriend.

The double-amputee track star, 27, says it was a tragic error.

Investigators say otherwise, and he faces at least a 25-year sentence if convicted of premeditated murder in the shooting of the law graduate and model.

“I want to start by apologizing to Reeva’s family,” Oscar Pistorius said, barely able to answer his lawyer’s questions. “I was simply trying to protect Reeva.”

He has denied the murder charge, saying he believed he was shooting an intruder inside his home when he fired four rounds through a locked bathroom door.

Reeva Steenkamp, 29, was locked inside.

Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend told the South African athlete she was sometimes afraid of him, complaining that he had a short temper and was jealous.

All this in the weeks before he killed her in February 2013, according to phone messages revealed at the Oscar Pistorius murder trial on Monday.

"I'm scared of u sometimes and how u snap at me and of how u will react to me," Reeva Steenkamp texted him, police Capt. Francois Moller said.

In another message Steenkamp wrote: "I can't be attacked by outsiders for dating u AND be attacked by you, the one person I deserve protection from."

Moller said that from Steenkamp's phone he obtained more than 1,000 exchanges with Pistorius on WhatsApp and other phone messaging applications.

Moller cited as evidence two BlackBerry phones, two iPhones, two iPads and a Mac from Pistorius' house the day after he killed Reeva Steenkamp.

Oscar Pistorius threw up in court Monday, often, as a pathologist detailed the injuries Reeva Steenkamp sustained when Oscar shot her through a locked door.

The Olympic track star, currently on trial for murder, was given a bucket to vomit into during testimony in South Africa, and he used it quite frequently.

When he wasn't booting, Oscar Pistorius was seen rocking back and forth in his seat, crying and covering his ears with his hands throughout the testimony.

The graphic testimony was pretty gruesome stuff by any measure.

Professor Gert Saayman detailed the bullet wounds he found on Reeva Steenkamp, Pistorius' girlfriend who he killed on Valentine's Day 2013, following her death.

The prosecution witness testified in detail about how the 29-year-old model was shot on the top of the head, in the right elbow, in the right hip and left hand.

South African sprinter and fallen global hero Oscar Pistorius was formally indicted early Monday on charges of murder and illegal possession of ammunition.

He was charged in the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in the early hours of Valentine's Day. Pistorius has pleaded not guilty.

The man known as the "Blade Runner," due to the blade-shaped prostheses he wears in competitions, was informed that his trial would begin  March 3.

Because South Africa does not hold trials by jury, a judge will preside over the trial and will render a verdict in the 26-year-old's stunning case.

Pistorius says he mistook his his girlfriend of several months, Steenkamp, for an intruder and shot her through a locked door the night of the murder.

The embattled South African track star's family issued a statement essentially complaining about celebrity gossip tabloids and his many social media critics.

Pistorius family says they are pained by the "disregard that is being shown by some ... for the profound pain that Reeva’s family and friends are going through."

That would be his slain GF Reeva Steenkamp. But their sympathy doesn't end with her. Oscar's family says that despite being free on bail, life is tough:

Oscar Pistorius of South Africa may not have captured a medal at the London Olympics, but you'd be hard pressed to find a bigger winner at the games, or in life.

This photo surfacing Sunday on Twitter proves it 1,000 times over.

It's an older image, but it resurfaced after Pistorius raced in the 400-meter semifinals. What Oscar Pistorius, a double amputee, did this week is immeasurable.

Because of him, Ellie Challs, the young girl he is seen racing here, can look up to a man who faced the same obstacles as her but refuse to accept limits:

Pistorius, nicknamed the Blade Runner after his cutting-edge prosthetic sprinting legs, inspired more than fellow amputees with his effort at the Olympics.

Though he didn't make the final, he did run well enough to make the semis and held his own against the best in the world in his track and field event.

Kirani James, the man who won the semifinal Pistorius ran in, was so moved that after the race, he held up the nameplate from Pistorius' uniform to the crowd.
