She brought tears to the eyes of Jennifer Lopez and the crowd to its feet on American Idol last night.

But when all was said and done, MK Nobilette was eliminated from the Fox competition.

The first openly gay contestant in show history, Nobilette told reporters after the news was announced that she sort of saw it coming.

Farewell, MK Nobillette

"The whole night kind of sucked," Nobilette said, adding of her Wednesday performance. "I definitely did the worst out of everybody because I fumbled so hard. "

Yes, Sam Woolf, M.K. Nobilette and company went contemporary on the latest performance episode, belting out songs made it big in the past three years.

We heard covers of One Direction, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and many other familiar artists, meaning viewers could easily compare these covers to their original versions.

We are officially off and running singing on American Idol Season 13.

The finalists took to the stage as a group for the first time on Wednesday and the results were decidedly mixed.

Things looked bleak throughout the opening hour, with a case of the nerves seemingly hitting a number of contestants.

But a handful in the back half showed promise and the judges continued to excel, giving us hope that all is not lost for this once-great competition.

Watch all 13 performances now and then cast your vote below:

The real battle will soon begin.

On Thursday night, American Idol announced its final 13 contestants, with five men and women chosen by the audience and three more selected as Wild Cards by the judges.

The remaining hopefuls reside from across the country (and include the first openly gay contestant in series history), but all share one common goal: becoming the next American Idol champion.

Which one of these lucky 13 will it be?

Caleb Johnson

It may not have the same ripple effects as the announcement by Michael Sam, but M.K. Nobilette went down in history last night on American Idol:

She became the first openly gay contestant to compete on the Fox series.

In speaking to the judges while awaiting to learn her fate, Nobilette told J. Lo, Harry and Keith:

“I’m very obviously gay, and there are always gonna be people in America and everywhere else who will definitely hate me. But I think that in the last two years there have been a lot of things that have really changed that, and have made it a positive thing.”

“Thank goodness,” muttered Connick Jr. in response to Nobilette's words.

In the past, American Idol had come under fire for seemingly telling gay contestants to keep their orientation quiet on air.

Not that anyone had any doubts about Adam Lambert, of course. But many wondered why his sexuality was not once mentioned during his run to second place.
