From best friends with a grilled cheese sandwich to beloved superstar.

As she outlines in her newly-released memoir, Miles to Go, Miley Cyrus truly has come a long way.

During a promotional tour for her autobiography, the singer stopped by a Barnes & Noble in New York City this week in order to meet and greet fans - and charge them money to read about her personal struggles.

Poor Miley Cyrus.

The singer/actress may be a worldwide sensation, but life hasn't always been easy for the 16-year old.

In her new autobiography, Miles to Go, Cyrus goes into detail about the "hardships and heartbreaks" that largely dominated her world before she made it big.

What sort of difficulties could someone such as Miley have gone through? In the following excerpt from the book, she details the painful actions of the "Anti-Miley Club."

It seemed like Operation Make Miley Miserable was escalating to a new level. More like Operation Take Miley Down. Three girls strutted up and stood towering over me. My stomach churned. I clutched my grilled cheese sandwich like it was the hand of my best friend.

[They locked me in the girl’s restroom during class.] They shoved me in. I was trapped. I banged on the door until my fists hurt. Nobody came. I spent what felt like an hour in there, waiting for someone to to rescue me, wondering how my life had gotten so messed up...

Do you feel bad for Cyrus? Or do you think it's ridiculous for a rich, beloved, successful 16-year old to write an autobiography that portrays herself as a victim in this way?

She may be world famous, have millions of dollars to her name and make news for running without a sports bra, but Miley Cyrus has a message for her fans:

She's a real person... just like you!

As the 16-year old's autobiography, "Miles to Go," hits shelves this week, the singer spoke to People Magazine about her motivation for having a ghost writer try to round up sympathy for this teenage icon releasing it.

"Most of the time you see me smiling – I mean that's how I got my name! – but that's not what it's all about. Everyone goes through hardships and heartbreaks," she said.

In the book, Miley touches on:

  • Daily hazing from bullies in sixth grader;
  • Her first love, referred to as "Prince Charming," but known to everyone else as Nick Jonas;
  • Her close-knit family, who Cyrus says was closely involved in the writing of the autobiography.

So, why open up in this way, Miley?

"I want my fans to feel closer to me," she said, leaving out the part about charging them money to do so, just like she did at her 16th birthday party last year.

First, there was Vanity Fair-gate.

Then, an underwear photo flap.

Fake Miles

This was followed by Asian mockery mayhem.

Indeed, Miley Cyrus has been involved in her share of controversial pictures. Each time, the 16-year old pleads innocent and acts as if she doesn't comprehend the different standards set aside for celebrities.

The latest issue stems from Cyrus' weekend jog with boyfriend Justin Gaston. Many media outlets have accused Miley of purposely drawing attention to certain body parts by wearing a low-cut shirt during the run.

Miley's mature response?

"I don't get the big whoop, but whatever," she said Monday on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show. "I guess it's just... I'm not allowed to jog any more... As I'm running, [my shirt] got a little bit lower and you could see a little of the bathing suit top. So, oh my goodness, Miley Cyrus wears a two-piece! Kill me!"

Ignoring your pompous use of the third person, Miley, the question must be raised: If you were simply planning to exercise, why were you wearing a bikini?!? (And jean shorts? And no socks?)

Our female readers can attest to the pain such an outfit would cause during a run, as opposed to the practical use of a sports bra.

Of course, a sports bra hides and flattens one's cleavage. And once Miley caught sight of photographers down the road, no way she could be caught wearing one of those, right?

Miley Cyrus and Justin Gaston went for a job together earlier this week.

They look like any normal, loving couple that exercises together, right? Not quite.

Let's count all the things wrong about this photo:

  1. Miley is wearing giant sunglasses;
  2. Miley is wearing jean shorts;
  3. Miley is not wearing a sports bra;
  4. They are running in the middle of the street;
  5. And, hmmm, there's was one more thing... oh yeah:
  6. Gaston is 20 years old and Miley just got her driver's license!

The lovely Freida Pinto burst on the Hollywood scene this year in Slumdog Millionaire, which pretty much dominated the entire Academy Awards last night.

Miley Cyrus, meanwhile, was at the gala to promote her film Hannah Montana and the Topless Vanity Fair Photo Chronicles. Just kidding. But give it time.

Hannah Montana and Mad Men star Alison Brie has a message for celebrity gossip reporters:

Give Miley Cyrus a break!

Photo of Miley

Brie says the actress has received undue criticism for recent controversial photos in which she makes slanted eyes.

"I think people are too hard on kids in the entertainment industry," Brie told Us Weekly. "It's a really tough industry to be in... If your average Joe was put under a microscope and scrutinized the way Miley Cyrus is, they'd be doing a lot worse."

Alison Brie, your argument makes no sense! If Miley Cyrus were your "average Joe," her pics would never be on the Internet in the first place!

Really, Alison? If that's the case, how come fellow young stars such as Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift have not found themselves facing an ounce of scrutiny?

They operate under the same microscope and seem to understand that celebrities will always face a different set of rules than your average Joe. In exchange? They are adored by the public and rich beyond their wildest dreams. Not a bad trade-off.

If Cyrus is old enough to date a 20-year old underwear model, she's old enough to know better.

Miley Cyrus has faced criticism before.

Many celebrity gossip followers though it was inappropriate for the singer to pose topless in Vanity Fair; others believe she's nothing more than a Disney-created hack.

Now, however, comes a true test. Cyrus is facing the wrath of an entire ethnicity, following a controversial photo in which she and friends appear to be making fun of Asians.

Earlier today, a woman acted as the plaintiff in a class action suit against Miley, one that is asking the singer to pay $4 billion in damages to the Asian Pacific Islanders she offended in the aforementioned picture.

How should Cyrus react to this lawsuit? You can answer that in the poll below. For now, she's just trying to prove that she actually has Asian friends...

Will Miley's friendly strategy pay off? We'll see.

Let us know how YOU think Cyrus should handle this lawsuit:

No, that dollar amount in this article's headline is not a misprint.

Miley Cyrus has been sued for more money than even she'll see in this lifetime.

According to TMZ, Lucie J. Kim claims to represent more than one million Asian Pacific Islanders that live in L.A. County. She has filed a class action lawsuit against Cyrus due to her participation in the infamous photo below that depicts Miley and friends slanting their eyes.

Might this photo cost Miley Cyrus... everything?!?

The documents state Cyrus "knew or should have known that her image would be publicly disseminated via the media, which Cyrus knew focused on her private life, specifically TMZ."

The suit also reads that that each Asian Pacific Islander is entitled to the minimum damages for a civil rights violation: $4,000.

* Our take: Yes, Miley Cyrus can be a hypocrite. She acts like a self-centered, self-important celebrity one moment; and then claims she's "just a kid" the next moment, supposedly unaware of the stir a photo such as the one above would create.

But, come on. $4 billion in damages?!? Even Patty Hewes would say that's unwarranted.
