Give it up, Republicans. Look to 2016.

Approval ratings for Barack Obama might drop a bit if the economy continues to tank, but the President took a step this week that ensures his popularity will remain, even in the face of rising employment rates and populist outage:

He got a puppy!

Not just any puppy, but one with "star quality," as Obama described Bo, adding: "That's a good-looking dog, let's face it."

It's also a good-looking family the President has gathered together. He, Michelle, Malia and Sasha took the First Dog out for a walk this week:

Malia says her new Portuguese water dog is "perfect." Do you agree?

Continuing to win raves for her fashion as well as her demeanor, First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama posed for a photo with Barack Obama yesterday.

OR DID SHE?

Is this actually a picture of America's newest First Couple? Or has Madame Tassaud gone to town once again and immortalized them in her D.C. museum?

Not exactly.

The First Lady's appeal is widespread, but she hasn't emerged as a celebrity magazine-selling fixture equivalent to the late Princess of Wales, despite publishers' hopes.

Vogue's March cover story on Michelle Obama called her "The First Lady the World's Been Waiting For." No doubt she's been embraced by the media world, appearing on magazine cover after cover, from People and Us Weekly to Newsweek.

Michelle Obama fashion is all the rage these days, and her approval ratings are quite high, but magazine sales of issues featuring the First Lady are mixed.

A Michelle cover doesn't hurt a general-interest magazine, the numbers suggest, but it doesn't produce more than an occasional lift either. New York magazine's March 23 issue (below) looks to have produced only average sales.

When Michelle appears in a magazine with strong African-American readership, however, or when she appears with the president, sales seem to jump more.

Essence, O and Ebony covers featuring Michelle solid far more copies than usual.

Celeb gossip magazines are mixed. Us Weekly's November 17 cover, "Their Amazing Journey," sold 923,161 copies, 16 percent more than average. Yet summer's "Michelle Obama - Why Barack Loves Her" cover sold just 2 percent above average.

On the bottom end? The September Ladies' Home Journal, picturing both Obamas, sold 182,233 copies - 21 percent below average. Although the teaser about saving money at the pump didn't help. Way to play up your cover photo.

One is a role model, the other a fashion model.

One likes to bare arms (her own arms, that is).

The other - well, she's been known to bare it all.

First Lady Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni, wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, certainly have one thing in common - both are getting enormous attention as their famous husbands as world leaders meet this week in Europe.

So many heads of state and fashion icons in one place.

After their fashionable London visit, Michelle Obama and her husband Barack landed in Strasbourg, France today. Whisked from Air Force One to the city's Rohan Palace, the Obamas met the French President and his wife for the first time.

The two super-stylish first ladies were scheduled to have lunch today, with the celebrity gossip media set to burn a new hole in the ozone layer over France.

But who would win a fashion face-off among two of the world's most visible style icons? Tell us what you think in the informal survey below ...

With a high-five for a young singer and a hug for as many girls as she could reach, First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama continued her trip to London today with an inspirational visit to a group of high school teens.

At the all-girl Elizabeth Garret Anderson Language School, Michelle delivered her first major address of the European tour, then turned to some of the performers who had entertained her and embraced all those onstage.

Here's the wife of Barack Obama dressed fashionably as always and spreading the love in the form of a high-five with a lucky British high-schooler ...

According to the Chicago Tribune, Michelle has officially become one of the fab four of the political fashion world in the modern era - joining the elite group of Jacqueline Kennedy, French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and Princess Diana.

Obama already has established her individuality through her fashion choices, but with a self-assurance and far-reaching influence similar to her predecessors.

Michelle Obama may be the First Lady of the United States, but the mother of two is still a fan of the (relatively) affordable fashion from J.Crew she lauded during her husband's campaign for the White House last year.

While across the pond in London for Thursday's G20 summit, she wore J.Crew head to toe on Wednesday - a pencil skirt, tank and cardigan ensemble from the store.

Total cost of Michelle Obama's outfit? $474. A sizable sum of cash, yes. But nowhere near Cindy McCain territory. And for a First Lady and celebrity with pretty much the whole world of couture to choose from, it's downright cheap.

Here's Michelle Obama in London today ...

Michelle Obama pictures don't seem to indicate anything out of the ordinary, but for whatever reason, rumors have been spreading that the 45-year-old First Lady of the United States is pregnant - and she is just baffled as a result

"I was like, 'Baby bump'? As hard as I work on my abs?" she tells Oprah Winfrey in O. "Here's the scoop: Not pregnant. And not planning on it."

While campaigning for her husband throughout 2008, the self-proclaimed French fry addict said she started to change the way they both eat.

"We started looking at our diet, trying to eliminate junk, getting seasonal fruits and vegetables that were grown locally," she said."We walked the kids through reading labels. We talked about why one juice might be better than another."

They've carried their healthy lifestyle to the White House.

"There's a small gym here that has everything we need," the fashion icon says. "I work out 4-5 days a week - and Barack does six. He's a workout zealot."

Michelle Obama with her family's #1 fan.

Besides treadmill and weights, Michelle Obama says, "I also do some jump rope, some kickboxing - and I'd like to take up Pilates, if I could figure out whether there's time. After I had [daughter] Malia, I began to prioritize exercise because I realized that my happiness is tied to how I feel about myself. I want my girls to see a mother who takes care of herself, even if that means I have to get up at 4:30 so I can do a workout."

She says she has her hands full with her two girls Malia and Sasha, 10 and 7, who just picked up an interest in basketball.

"Barack's losing his mind," she said of her husband, an avid basketball fan. "I was like, 'Settle down - don't act too excited, or she will not want to do it.'"

"He’s always asking: ‘Is that new? I haven’t seen that before.’ It’s like, Why don’t you mind your own business? Solve world hunger. Get out of my closet."

- Michelle Obama on her husband's interest in fashion

Reporters are not the only ones with a particularly keen interest in what Michelle Obama wears these days. Barack Obama, Michelle says, notices everything.

In fact, Michelle has learned not to wear a certain gray metallic belt when the president is around: "Barack calls it my Star Trek belt,” the first lady said in an interview with the New York Times this week. “He doesn’t understand fashion.”

She teasingly imitated him: “You didn’t need more shoes. The shoes you had on yesterday were fine. Why can’t you just wear that for the rest of the presidency?”

The First Lady breaks ground on the White House vegetable garden.

The First Lady of the United States said she was not naturally thin and, like most other people, Michelle Obama must exercise and watch what she eats.

“I have hips, and I have them covered up with pleats,” she said.

To keep those hips from spreading, she said, she follows an exercise regimen of light weights, calisthenics, jump-rope and a cardiovascular routine.

Up-and-coming fashion designer Jason Wu may have gotten major attention after he created Michelle Obama's inaugural ball gown, but it looks like Michael Kors is running a close second with some non-TV-related press thanks to Mrs. O, too.

Not only did Michelle Obama's White House portrait feature a black Kors ensemble, but she sports an eye-scorching blood orange (red?) dress on the April cover of O.

Kendall Jenner Fashion

This is celebrity fashion news in and of itself, as the only person to ever grace the cover of O during its nine year history is, well, the Big O herself. We mean Oprah.

Bruce Weber shot the cover of the magazine, upon which Oprah is wearing Rachel Roy and touting this as the first interview Obama allowed in the White House.

Technically, wouldn't that honor belong to the already-released March issue of Vogue? Either way, do you like the dress Michelle wears on the new cover of O?

The wife of U.S. President Barack Obama has become our de facto celebrity style icon in-chief since he took office in January. She recently became the second First Lady to grace the cover of Vogue (after Hillary Rodham Clinton).

Michelle Obama's first official portrait as First Lady of the United States (and unofficial First Lady of Fashion) was released by the White House on Friday.

She appears in a Michael Kors black shift dress and pearls in the photo, taken in the famed home's "Blue Room." Here she is looking stunning as always:

In an interview with Andre Leon Talley for the new issue of Vogue, she opens up about helping Sasha, 7, and Malia, 10, adjust to life in Washington, D.C.

"I'm going to try to take them to school every morning - as much as I can," she says. "But there's also going to be a measure of independence. And obviously there will be times where I won't be able to drop them off at all."

"I always like to be a presence in my kids' school," the First Mom added. "I want to know their teachers; I want to know the other parents."
