Oprah's half-sister made major headlines this week, but today, the host sheds light on a family secret of a different sort. One that often goes unrecognized.

First Lady Michelle Obama visits the Oprah Winfrey Show today along with Tom Brokaw and Bob Woodward. The topic? The Bravest Families in America.

Oprah, Michelle and the famed journalists have joined forces to shed light on the sacrifice military families make when their loved ones go into battle.

Asked what moves her about our armed services, Michelle said, "Their strength. Their pride. Their courage. Their willingness to sacrifice without complaint."

"That's what moves me every time. Whenever I'm feeling bad, or feeling sorry for myself, I suck it up because of these families."

As for why Michelle is speaking up, she says it's because someone has to.

Michelle Obama's State Dinner dress won raves from many style scribes last week, but one prominent designer isn't a fan of it - specifically its origins.

Oscar de la Renta has taken the First Lady to task because the gown she donned at the dinner, in honor of Chinese President Hu Jintao, was European.

Mugler Shot

“The visit was to promote American-Chinese trade," he said. "American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why wear European clothes?”

MADE IN THE UK: Does de la Renta have a point?

The Michelle Obama pictures above show the elegant red-to-black gown, designed by Sarah Burton from the late Alexander McQueen’s design house.

McQueen was British, as is Burton, and de la Renta thought that Barack's better half should have worn an American designer's work for the occasion.

Everyone's a critic. What do you think of Michelle's dress?

The Alexander McQueen dress Michelle Obama wore to the White House State Dinner for the Republic of China marked another fashion risk for the First Lady.

But was it one that hit or missed?

Dressed in a red petal print silk organza gown, Michelle was both fashionably bold and diplomatic, as the brilliant red is a symbol of luck in Chinese culture:

Despite a visiting Chinese President and an A-list guest list, all eyes were on the First Lady, whose impact on the global fashion industry has been unrivaled.

She may be the First Lady of the United States, but Michelle Obama, who turns 47 today, still says that first and foremost, she is Malia and Sasha's mom.

That's indicative of her humility, but she's so much more than that.

On top of providing many fashion-forward Michelle Obama pictures, she's spent two years supporting military families, helping working women balance career and family, encouraging national service and promoting the arts and education.

Recently, Michelle launched the Let’s Move! campaign, which - much to Sarah Palin's chagrin - strives to bring together community leaders, teachers, doctors, nurses and parents in a national effort to bring down childhood obesity.

Sounds like a worthwhile cause, and positive role model, to us.

Sarah Palin really does not appreciate Michelle Obama's campaign to keep America's youth from becoming morbidly obese down the line. Stupid government!

Having already lambasted Michelle over her childhood nutrition initiative, the mighty caribou slayer brought it up again Sunday on TLC's Sarah Palin's Alaska.

"Where are the s'mores? This is in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert," a HILARIOUS, sarcastic Sarah Palin quips.

Her love for put-downs and pickin' fights instead of debating policy intricacies may explain why even ardent conservatives don't want her as president.

Just a theory.

Follow the jump for the clip, during which you can also hear Palin complain about her kids' foibles playing out in the media ... man, that sucks for them!

Also, enjoy a bonus clip of her with Kate Gosselin for good, hilarious measure. 'Cause sometimes, one overexposed TLC family just isn't enough  ...

Sigh. Sarah Palin is back in the news again.

For whatever reason, the ex-Alaska Governor took First Lady Michelle Obama and her efforts to improve childhood nutrition to task on Laura Ingraham's radio show.

We know conservatives believe in smaller government, and there are strong cases to be made for that philosophy. Attacking Michelle's nutrition initiative, though?

Sarah Palin is not a fan of Michelle Obama's anti-obesity efforts.

Of the First Lady, Palin told Ingraham that "I think she has got a different worldview and she is not hesitant at all to share what her worldview is."

As for Sarah Palin's worldview, no one can make sense of it, but she does use big words like "exceptionalism" in the rant against Michelle below:

First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama may be our fashionista-in-chief, but that doesn't mean she can't be our resident recessionista-in-chief as well.

Michelle has been recycling outfits lately. Now, that's change we can believe in!

Mya Fashion Choice

Case in point: Here's the First Couple at Camp David recently, with Michelle looking chic in a navy sweater with an open back paired with a floral blouse ...

Then, in Ohio on Sunday,  the outfit was repeated with a twist: The cardigan was now worn the other way, with the lace-up side in the front. How inventive!

Either way, the sweater looks good, as do most things she wears (as our gallery of Michelle Obama pictures demonstrates), thanks to her classy, unique style.

See the flip side of her latest style statement post-jump ...

Cultural impact might mean as much as money and political influence, as evidenced by the celebrities on Forbes' 2010 World's 100 Most Powerful Women list.

The list is based less on traditional titles and roles and more on creative influence as well as entrepreneurship, the building of brands, the breaking of barriers.

The women of politics, business, media and lifestyle (entertainment, sports and fashion) were ranked in each group, and after that, in group against group.

Two of the top three in one photo!

The diverse mash-up of hard and dynamic power led to this top ten:

  1. Michelle Obama, First Lady of the U.S.
  2. Irene Rosenfeld, Chief Executive, Kraft Foods
  3. Oprah Winfrey, Talk show host and media mogul
  4. Angela Merkel, Chancellor, Germany
  5. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State, U.S.
  6. Indra Nooya, Chief Executive, Pepsico
  7. Lady Gaga, Singer and rumored hermaphrodite
  8. Gail Kelly, Chief Executive, Westpac
  9. Beyoncé Knowles, Singer and fashion designer
  10. Ellen DeGeneres, Talk show host

What do you think of this list of the most powerful females? Spot on? Off base? Who would you include/exclude? Who should be higher?

Brandy quickly emerged as one of the favorites on Dancing With the Stars this season after a strong opening performance. But is she favored in this showdown?

The competition is pretty tough. Earlier this month, the First Lady of the United States wore a bronze and navy Kevan Hall polka-dot shirt dress and blue pumps.

Days later, Brandy attended Macy's Glamorama bash in an identical dress (only with reversed colors) paired with red shoes and bold lips. But who looked better?

Check out the Brandy and Michelle Obama pictures below and vote:

Who wore this dress better?

Michelle Obama has all the fun. While her husband was busy focusing on a Florida pastor that actually plans to burn the Quran on September 11, the First Lady spent her day in New Orleans.

She was at an event organized by NFL Play 60, a campaign that encourages children to be active for at least an hour everyday and is intended to tackle (get it?!?) the problem of obesity.

Former NFL stars Deuce McAllister and Eddie George joined Obama at Brock Elementary School, as Michelle showed off her moves on the field:

  • TD, Michelle!
  • First Lady Football

She also offered these words of wisdom to the kids in attendance:

“It’s not just enough that you exercise, but you also have to watch what you put in your body. You can’t live on soda and chips and all that. You can’t. Sorry. If you could, I tell you, I would. But you can’t. You’ve got to have vegetables and fruits.”
