Mark Sanford is the Governor of South Carolina.
From 1994 to 2000, he served as the Republican representative in the U.S. House of Representatives for South Carolina's 1st congressional district, where he was a staunch conservative with an independent streak.
In 2002, he was elected the 115th Governor of South Carolina, where he had a contentious relationship with the South Carolina legislature.
Mark Sanford was reelected Governor in 2006.
In office, notably, he rejected stimulus funds for his state in 2009 but later took it so that it would not be distributed to other states.
Mark Sanford's tenure has been put into doubt by extended disappearances he recently revealed to be part of an extramarital affair with an Argentine woman named Maria.
He had wife Jenny Sanford have four children.
