It was a slow, but steady rise to the top for Lee DeWyze.

But it all paid off tonight, as the laid back rocker with the sexy, scratchy voice was crowned season nine champion on American Idol!

DeWyze peaked at the ideal time, bringing the crowd and judges to their feet with his recent rendition of "Hallelujah" last week. He then carried that momentum into the finale and defeated a worthy competitor, Crystal Bowersox.

On the Finale

A choked-up DeWyze accepted Ryan Seacrest's congratulations after the announcement and proceeded to sing his cover of "Beautiful Day," which will soon hit radio stations around the country.

Lee DeWyze threw down the real gauntlet, according to Randy Jackson.

His rendition of "Hallelujah" was simply stunning, said Ellen DeGeneres.

The singer is the heart of the show, gushed Kara DioGuardi.

And Simon Cowell went as far as to refer to Lee as a "great person."

What prompted all this praise? DeWyze's dominance during the most recent performance night of American Idol. Watch him take a rocker's edge to this classic single below:

Viewers also watched DeWyze go home and perform in Illinois over the weekend, where he threw out the first pitch at a Chicago Cubs game, while also entertaining fans in Skokie...

Fans will ultimately have the final say, but to THG, Michael Lynche and Lee DeWyze stood out most on American Idol Tuesday. The judges were certainly impressed.

In fact, Simon Cowell said that it was his cover of India.Arie's "Ready for Love" that finally made him a credible artist in his eyes. For the surly Brit, that's saying a lot.

Slowing things down with an acoustic guitar, Big Mike sounded great and wowed the panel and audience alike. We're pretty sure the voters will turn out for this, too.

Here's Michael Lynche singing "Ready For Love" ...

Lee DeWyze also made a statement last night, perhaps propelling himself to contender status with a soulful, raspy, powerhouse rendition of "Treat Her Like a Lady."

"This was the night your life may have changed forever," Simon said. Again, high praise from the man. Follow the jump to see Lee do his version of the classic ...

The 11 finalists all gave it their best shot, but performances by Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze stood out the most on Tuesday night's American Idol.

Showing why she's been a favorite to become the ninth American Idol winner since her first audition, Crystal channeled her inner Janis Joplin last night.

Bowersox's performance of "Me & Bobby McGee," mentored by none other than Miley Cyrus, is even being called better than the original by some fans.

That may be a stretch ... or is it? Check it out and see ...

Once again, socks were knocked off by Crystal Bowersox. Some weeks, it's like she's in a class by herself and everyone else is angling to be runner-up.

Lee DeWyze held his own Tuesday, however. In one of the night's top covers of Billboard #1 hits, the Chicago product rocked the Box Tops' "The Letter."

While everyone has been assuming a female will come out on top of American Idol this season, the ladies left the door open for the men last night, didn't they?

It's very early, but no woman stood out on the first live performance show of the year.

Two singers very happy about this development? Jermaine Sellers and Lee DeWyze. The crooners will take the stage this evening, along with 10 other men, and aim to impress all four judges and all 30 million people watching from home.

Sellers is a professional church singer and takes care of his ailing mother. She's been diagnosed with Spina Bifida.

DeWyze, meanwhile, wasn't seen very often during the initial Hollywood rounds. He hails from Mount Prospect, Illinois.

Compare the hopefuls and then vote below in our poll:

Who will go farther this season?

We're one week away from American Idol taking its show to Hollywood.

Next Tuesday, Ellen DeGeneres debuts as a permanent judge and we already know of at least one singer she'll be critiquing: Lee DeWyze.

This soulful singer auditioned in Chicago and hauls from Mount Prospect, Illinois. DeWyze has enjoyed a moderately successful career so far, fronting The Lee DeWyze Band and specializing in acousting guitar.

He released a rock album titled "Slumberland" last year.

The smooth crooner once said his goal is to relate to fans:

"I want a connection with my audience in the sense that any song I do reminds them of a specific moment in their lives - not mine."

How selfless! So far, DeWyze and Andrew Garcia represent our favorite male semifinlists on the show. Below, you can listen to a single by the former and judge his chances on American Idol.
