Lazaro Arbos was eliminated from American Idol last night.

But the polarizing singer still sees himself as a champion in one sense.

“I won for the boys!" he told reporters after Ryan Seacrest announced the news. "I’m the next American Boy Idol!”

It's true that the five remaining finalists are all female for the first time in show history, with Candice Glover leading an impressive field.

Last night's American Idol performance show was owned by Candice Glover and Lazaro Arbos.

In two VERY contrasting ways.

Glover covered a pair of tracks and put on what many are hailing as the greatest single night in Idol history.

Arbos, meanwhile, didn't forget the lyrics to The Carpenters’ “(They Long To Be) Close To You,” but was so wobbly and off-pitch that Randy Jackson suggested it was the worst performance of all-time on the show.

OUCH! Do you agree with that harsh assessment Watch Arbos in embarrassing action now:

On the American Idol Top 8 performance show last night, Janelle Arthur separated herself from the pack.

And so did Burnell Taylor, Devin Velez and Lazaro Arbos... but for a very different reason.

Taking the stage as a trio and covering the Motown classic "I Can't Help Myself," these three were met with rather harsh criticism from Nicki Minaj, who railed:

"I don't know what that was, but imma act like I ain't even seen it, or heard it! Imma thank God that all three of you already had your solo performances. Lazaro, you fell as flat as a pancake. Don't ever do that again. All three of y'all, go! GET OFF THE STAGE!"

Did Minaj over do it? Watch now and decide for yourself:

The American Idol Top 8 took their act to Detroit this week, covering songs by artists who hail from the Motor City.

Did this variation on Motown Night pay off? For some, yes.

Janelle Arthur broke out her guitar and broke down "You Keep Me Hangin’ On" in very impressive fashion. See for yourself:

For others? Far less so, most notably Angie Miller, who failed to show the "fun crazy side" she promised prior to her failure to really rock out on "Shop Around."

And Lazaro Arbos, who attempted to cover Stevie Wonder and whose voice was simply not up to the challenge. Will it finally be time to say goodbye to Arbos tonight?

Lazaro Arbos did not exactly do The Beatles proud on American Idol last night.

The singer, who has been open about his severe stuttering difficulties, wobbled through the ballad "My Life," with Randy Jackson giving him an honest assessment afterward:

“It was out of tune from beginning to end. Something has definitely happened to you. Where did the vocals go? You are just not hitting it on all cylinders.”

The American Idol Top 9 tackled the Fab 4 this week.

Yes, it was the annual Beatles songbook-themed night for Candice Glover, Burnell Taylor and our other Season 12 finalists.

Which contestants stand the best chance of moving on?

Glover was her typically excellent self on "Come Together," but she may have been overshadowed by two other female hopefuls:

The American Idol Top 10 gave it their all Wednesday with "Songs of the Idols," i.e. tracks used on the show by previous contestants or later released by winners.

Basically, hooray for Kelly Clarkson tributes!

It's hard to handicap a clear favorite right now, but as Randy Jackson put it, Angie Miller, Candice Glover, and Kree Harrison look like they're in it to win it.

Take a look at those strong efforts below:

The vocals and performances of the above three seemed to put them in the top tier last night, though there are many weeks (and voter surprises) to come.

As for the best - and worst - of the rest? Read on ...

So far, so not very good.

Through the opening rounds of American Idol Season 12, we haven't exactly been impressed by any of the male contestants.

But it's not too late to turn things around Cortez Shaw, Lazaro Arbos and company.
