In slightly less surprising NBA free agency news than LeBron returning to Cleveland, the New York Knicks have severed ties with Lamar Odom.

The 34-year-old never even suited up for the orange and blue.

Lamar on the Clippers

Knicks president, Phil Jackson, who coached Lamar for five years in his prime with the L.A. Lakers, just signed Odom in hopes of revitalizing his career.

So much for that.

"Unfortunately, Lamar was unable to uphold the standards to return as an NBA player," Jackson said. "We found it necessary to free up the roster spot."

He did not elaborate on why the Knicks ended Odom's two-year contract after less than three months, and without him ever playing in a game.

You can imagine a whole host of reasons, though, if you're a Keeping Up With the Kardashians devotee or read any amount of celebrity gossip.

One of the perks of being a pro athlete? The paycheck. At least, to those of us who don't play professional sports, making $5 million a year to play football seems like a pretty okay gig.

Another perk of that job? The athletes would probably say it's the hot wives and girlfriends.

Until they find out that their wives and girlfriends make more money than they do.

But some guys, like Hank Baskett and Gerard Pique don't seem to care that their wives are bringing home the bacon. They're all... enlightened or something.

(Or they just like the money and don't care who makes it. That's probably it.)

Here are 9 athletes who make LESS money than their wives or girlfriends:

How does one of the most famous quarterbacks in the NFL top his own salary? By marrying the most famous and highly-paid model in the WORLD.

The road was tough and the journey difficult, but Lamar Odom is back in the NBA.

The estranged husband of Khloe Kardashian signed an unusual contract with the New York Knicks yesterday, coming on board for the final game of their 2013-2014 season (a loss last night in which he did not play) and agreeing to a team option for the 2014-2015 season.

Based on the deal, the Knicks can see what sort of shape Odom is in this summer before deciding to pick up said option or not.

Odom, a Queens native, enjoyed some of his most productive seasons playing for Coach Phil Jackson, who is now the New York President.

It's adios to Spain for Lamar Odom. The athlete's basketball comeback in a Spanish pro hoops league is over almost as quickly as it began due to injury.

Khloe Kardashian’s future ex-husband only played in two games for the Laboral Kutxa Baskonia Spanish team before making an early departure.

After an ongoing back injury has sidelined him, he returned to the U.S. for treatment. He’s expected to be out of commission for at least a month's time.

Whether or not he’ll return to Europe to complete his two-month contract is unclear, according to reports, but many consider it unlikely for the 34-year-old.

After becoming a free agent last year, the troubled star was hoping to sign with the L.A. Clippers or Lakers, which never came to fruition ... shockingly.

Odom arrested last year for a DUI and after reports of infidelity, drug use and crack videos, his reality star wife of four years filed for divorce in December.

Lamar Odom is apparently still holding out hope that things will work out with Khloe Kardashian, saying that his estranged spouse "will always be my wife."

Maybe legally, if he avoids signing the divorce papers long enough.

Odom, who just signed with the Spanish pro team Baskonia (a.k.a. Laboral Kutxa), acknowledged that the divorce may happen, but he hopes it doesn't.

Either way, their union will never completely be over ... in his mind.

"I love my wife. She'll always be my wife, no matter what," he said.

"Who knows? We don't know exactly if [the divorce is going through]. Only time will tell. I hope not. But even if we were divorced, she would always be my wife."

The athlete went on to say that marrying the reality star was one of the greatest things he'd ever done. "Those were some of the best years of my life," he told Us.

Lamar Odom is going away again.

But not to rehab this time... to Spain!

The ex-husband of Khloe Kardashian has signed a two-month contract with a professional basketball team in that country, Laboral Kutxa. It includes an option to be extended for the rest of the season.

Odom played for the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2012-2013 season and was close to a return with that squad in November.

Khloe Kardashian is filing for divorce from Lamar Odom, reports say, and it will all go down today. She will cite irreconcilable differences for the split.

According to TMZ, the divorce filing should be basic from a legal standpoint, as a prenuptial agreement kept all all of the couple's assets separate.

Khloe and Lamar have no kids; he has three from a previous relationship.

As previously reported, the final straw was not his crack use, or alleged cheating with Polina Polonsky, or DUI arrest, or his refusal to go to rehab.

It was the NBA player's random, infamous freestyle rap video.

Leaked last month when there still appeared to be a glimmer of hope in the duo's crumbling relationship, the clip showed Lamar rapping incoherently.

After the leak of the so-called Lamar Odom crack video - he claims he wasn't on drugs, just really drunk at the time - she took off her wedding ring.

Lamar Odom swears he is not on crack again, despite a video that surfaced this week and would certainly suggest as much to the untrained observer.

The athlete admits he fell off the wagon last week, when the video (below), was shot, but he insists he was merely drunk out of his mind. No crack.

The alleged Lamar Odom crack video posted by TMZ shows him slurring his words in an L.A. bathroom and rapping shirtless with Jamie Sangouthai.

In it, the 34-year-old raps about how he uses drugs "make the pain go away," and also notes that "When Khloe's out of town, I still be on the DL."

Odom's friend adds after that last part, "You know what it is / We the QU [Queens] pimps / Ask any of these shorties / We ran through their cribs."

Despite getting specific in the video about using crack and cocaine (and alluding to cheating on Khloe Kardashian), Lamar swears he is not on drugs.

He clean and training at the University of Rhode Island for his supposed return to the Clippers ... though one has to wonder if they've also seen this.

Lamar Odom's drug problem may not be as under control as he'd like us to believe, at least based on this video, shot this month and obtained by TMZ.

In it, the athlete raps incoherently rapping without his shirt on, talking about drugs, making money without the NBA, and cheating on Khloe Kardashian.

Lamar does not smoke crack in this video. Let's make that clear. Yet it's a celebration of sorts for the drug lifestyle that torpedoed his career and marriage.

He appears to be out of it, rapping about his fragrance Unbreakable, how he uses drugs to "make the pain go away," and even drops Kanye West's name.

One key line he raps: "And when Khloe's out of town, I still be on the DL."

His friend adds, "You know what it is / We the QU [Queens] pimps."

Lamar Odom has now confirmed that reports this past weekend are true. He is in discussions to return to the L.A. Clippers, the last NBA team he played for.

Spotted at LAX earlier, he made it clear that something is indeed going on between him and the team, which did not re-sign him after the 2012-13 campaign.

Clippers Coach Doc Rivers said he met with Lamar Friday to have a discussion and there is a buzz that serious negotiations are underway with Odom.

The team does have a roster spot, so it's not out of the question that the estranged Mr. Khloe Kardashian could be back on the NBA court before long.

Odom, 34, certainly wants back in the game, because he's been seriously training for the last month, and seems to have convinced the Clips he's drug free.
