Following lots of important questions, crucial bikini poses and a dreadful live singing performance by Heidi Montag, Dayana Mendoza will formally cede her crown as the 2009 winner of the Miss Universe pageant is named on Sunday night.

Representing America will be Miss USA Kristen Dalton.

Contrary to popular belief, Carrie Prejean did not win the Miss USA pageant, Kristen Dalton did. Prejean finished second, then was later stripped of her crown as Miss California after flaking on her contract (and being stripped of her top).

Therefore it is Kristen Dalton, 22, hailing from the great state of North Carolina, who will be competing Sunday night at the Atlantis in the Bahamas.

She's a worthy competitor, to say the least ...

Can she become the first American winner of the Miss Universe title since 1997? The odds are slim, if only because more than 90 girls competing, as Donald Trump (who bought the Miss Universe Organization in 1996) mentioned on The Late Show.

Either way, she'll give it a good run. Click to enlarge more photos of the beautiful Miss USA title-holder and Carrie Prejean conqueror, Kristen Dalton ...

With all the controversy surrounding Carrie Prejean, it's easy to forget that the lightning rod did not actually win the Miss USA pageant a couple of weeks ago.

That honor went to Kristen Dalton.

Prejean Press Conference

Immediately after the North Carolina beauty took home the crown, the spotlight turned to Prejean and her comments about same-sex marriage. But Dalton has no complaints, telling E! Online that all the commotion has actually been a good thing.

"I think it's great for the Miss Universe Organization, it's given us a lot of publicity," Dalton said. "A lot of people will be watching this Miss USA pageant next year."

Wonderfully PC answer. She should go into politics.

And as for the embattled Miss California, Dalton says the outspoken Prejean "was friendly to everybody, so I don't really think anyone has a problem with her."

As for her views on a certain divisive political issue?

"Everybody has the right to their own opinion," Kristen Dalton said, "Me personally, I think that everybody deserves equal rights, it's really as simple as that."

Donald Trump's Miss Universe Organization insists it didn't take issue with Prejean's comments but that she appeared to be shirking Miss California duties.

That, and the topless photos she took when she was 17.

Although dethroned Miss Nevada 2007 Katie Rees feels that Trump created a double standard by keeping Prejean but stripping her own crown due to older party pics that surfaced after she won, Dalton sees a difference between the two situations.

"If you look at the photos, they're completely different," the reigning Miss USA said. "Carrie's were modeling photos, and Katie's were in action."

She means girl-on-girl action, in case any of you are unfamiliar.

"Donald Trump approved [the photos]," Kristen Dalton added. "He's the owner of this organization and I fully support what he thinks is best.

"And you know, [Carrie Prejean] has the opportunity to go back to California and try to be the best Miss California USA that she can be."

More importantly: Who would you rather ...

Carrie Prejean might or might not be dating Michael Phelps.

But the woman who defeated Prejean for the Miss USA crown is definitely crushing on a certain American Idol finalist.

During an interview with OK!, Kristen Dalton showered Matt Giraud with affection.

Trying to Stay Alive

Kristen Dalton is smitten with Matt Giraud. But she might need to get in line behind a few million other fans.

“He’s the Justin Timberlake of the show," she said. "I love how he can play the piano, and his soothing voice. I would love to meet him. He could sing to me and play the piano all day long, and I would just fall in love with him.”

Dalton added that she'd like Giraud - one of five contestants remaining on Idol to - serenade her with Frank Sinatra or Harry Connick, Jr.

If you're reading this, Matt, you're welcome for the advice. Go get her!

Newly-crowned Miss USA Kristen Dalton and runner-up Carrie Prejean hold different views on gay marriage - but the former says the embattled Miss California has every right to her opinion and harbors no ill will towards her.

On the Today show, Al Roker asked Dalton how she would have responded to the gay marriage question posed to Prejean that sparked so much debate in the finals.

Trump vs. Prejean

"The beautiful thing about America is that we have the right to choose what partner we want to love, commit and spend the rest of our lives with," Kristen said.

"I think that all couples should be able to be recognized legally, to enter into a union. Whether or not that should be defined as marriage, I'll leave that to politicians."

Despite opinions that politics and religion should be left out of the competition, Dalton said the gay marriage question, posed by judge Perez Hilton, was "fair."

"It's a social issue that surrounds us every day that citizens should be aware of," she said. "As a state representative, I think we should be prepared to answer it."

While they share different viewpoints, Kristen Dalton supports her rival.

"I'm proud of her for speaking from her heart, and she's passionate and what she believes in, and she's proud of herself," she said of Carrie Prejean. "I respect her."

"The beauty of America is that we all have a right to our own opinion."

This summer, the two have a chance to reunite. If Kristen Dalton wins the Miss Universe competition, Carrie Prejean could inherit her Miss USA title.

"I would love for Carrie to become Miss USA," Dalton said. "We were actually friends during the competition. I love her, and I think she's great."

The more important issue, obviously: Who would you rather ...

Sunday night, Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton was crowned 2009's Miss USA at the famed Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Yet it's runner-up Carrie Prejean who's getting all the headlines after her answer to a question by Perez Hilton about her gay marriage stance, which resulted in massive controversy and (she believes) may have cost her the crown.

She passed God's test, though. At least in her mind.

Anyway, go ahead and skewer or defend Carrie Prejean all you want, but don't take anything away from Kristen Dalton. She won it fair and square. Don't overlook the national treasure who actually is Miss USA! Here's a little bit about her ...

The state's second winner of the coveted beauty queen crown after 2005 champ Chelsea Cooley, Dalton won both the swimsuit and evening gown competitions during the finals on her way to being named Miss USA at the end of the night.

The oldest of four children, the 22-year-old Kristen Dalton is currently an Honors student majoring in Psychology and Spanish at East Carolina University. She is a financially independent student by choice, working numerous jobs while at ECU.

Her glamourous turn in Las Vegas will not change this hometown girl, who prefers to lounge around in jeans with a zippered jacket, and who stays active in her church.

She aspires to be a motivational speaker and run her own charity.

Take that, Carrie Prejean. Click to enlarge lots more Kristen Dalton photos below and it will be plain to see why Miss USA 2009 is the winner in our book:

Kristen Dalton, Miss North Carolina, was crowned Miss USA 2009 Sunday, beating back challenges from 50 other beauty queens in the live pageant in Las Vegas.

An aspiring motivational speaker and entertainer from Wilmington, N.C., she edged the first runner-up, Miss California Carrie Prejean, and second runner-up, Miss Arizona Alicia-Monique Blanco, for the coveted beauty queen title.

"It feels really natural," said Kristen Dalton, who takes over for Miss USA 2008 Crystle Stewart, who was preceded by Rachel Smith, who succeeded Tara Conner.

"I worked so be here and this has been my lifelong dream and it's finally here. And whoever knew you could win in a turquoise gown?" Who ever knew, indeed:

Contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia competed in the pageant, in which they were judged by their performance in swimsuit and evening gown modeling contests and their responses to questions asked onstage.

The top 15 worked the stage in white string bikinis designed by "singer" Jessica Simpson's mom jeans swimwear line. Surprisingly, they didn't look awful!

Kristen Dalton's title comes with a year's use of a New York apartment, a PR team, a two-year scholarship at the New York Film Academy, an undisclosed salary and an insane schedule of drinking, snorting coke and girl-on-girl action.

And maybe even porn down the line. Just ask Kelli McCarty. Anyway, we wish our new Miss USA the best. Click to enlarge lots more Kristen Dalton pictures ...
