Summer might not officially begin until June 21, but unofficially, the hottest season of the year is here. Bathing suits, sunscreen, and the beach are all calling our names.

You know what else this season needs? More... MUSIC. Songs of summer, to be exact.

What, exactly, IS a "song of summer"? Right now it's what every artist is trying to acquire: the most played song of the season that most ... well, reminds us of summer.

Our favorite warm-weather jams conjure up images of bodies of water, dancing, frozen and/or boozy drinks, and maybe even some lovin'. Preferably all of the above.

To that end, we've compiled a playlist of 21 songs of summer, comprised of #1 hits and hot songs we love that remind us of our carefree time in the sun.

Roll your windows down, turn your radio up, and cruise through this gallery ...

Katy Perry covers the new issue of Cosmopolitan, marking the first time the iconic women's magazine has featured the same covergirl for all 62 of its foreign editions.

Katy Perry Cosmo Cover 2014
Katy Perry covers Cosmo in so many countries, we can't even keep them all straight!

Quite an honor. But don't worry, being deemed the "Cosmo Global Icon" hasn't changed Katy one bit and the "Dark Horse" still enjoys dishing about her favorite topic: the men in her life.

In an interview conducted by Chelsea Handler, Katy makes remarkably candid comments about her divorce from Russell Brand and her breakup with John Mayer. News that Katy had been dumped by Diplo must not have been available at press time.

On her divorce: "It feels like a hundred lifetimes ago, so it's like digging up an old grave. A lot of therapy has happened and a lot of understanding and growth...In the long run, it was necessary for me to have more of a teammate."

Musicians are forever pushing the envelope, honing their crafts, stretching their limits.

Or they're just trying to get as many #1 hits as possible in order to sell more records and make more money to buy big cribs with multi-car garages and basketball courts in the basement.

To that end, artists frequently collaborate with other artists to experiment with style and sound. Sometimes they cross the genre lines and what results is... unexpected.

Nearly an entire season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta was dedicated to Kandi Burruss' quest for songwriting credits in Country music and she teamed up with Sara Evans to make it happen.

Some of these collaborations are wildly more successful than others, but when rap meets country or when pop meets metal, it feels weird. So weird it's good.

Here are 11 weird musical collaborations that totally work. Get ready to groove!

Katy Perry and Juicy J - Dark Horse
Academy Award winner Juicy J's inclusion on Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" made the song sure to be a hit instead of a, well, dark horse.

John Mayer has been the subject of more hit diss tracks than every living rapper combined, so it's no wonder the legendary ladies man has adopted a nonchalant attitude about being roasted in song form.

"I have super-strength for gang-ups. I'm fine," Mayer told some TMZ cameras who caught him third-wheeling it on his friends' date night.

Asked about Katy Perry's plans to burn Mayer in an upcoming single, John hilariously replied, "I hope everyone's song goes to number one. I stopped writing hits

Perry is reportedly still devastated over her breakup with Mayer, so a scathing ballad or club-banger directed at the acoustic hitmaker wouldn't be unexpected.

After all, attacking Mayer is a proven formula for a hit:

Paul Walker and Philip Seymour Hoffman's untimely deaths left voids in their unfinished projects.

While the Fast & Furious franchise opted to use Walker's real-life, non-acting brother to finish up, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay will go on with a computer-generated image of Plutarch Heavensbee in Hoffman's place.

None of that would matter had those men had their very own celebrity doppelgänger.

And after creating this celebrity look-alike gallery, we're sort of shocked no one tapped Joseph Gordon-Levitt to fill in for Heath Ledger. (Just wait until you get to #7 and see what we mean.)

Prepare to have your mind blown, ladies and THGers. These 19 celebrity look-alikes are so similar you won't believe they aren't related. (They aren't. We checked.)

Katy Perry and Zooey Deschanel
Zooey Deschanel looks more like Katy Perry than she does her own sister. No Bones about it.

Katy Perry covers the new issue of Cosmopolitan. EVERYWHERE. The pop singer is the magazine's first-ever worldwide cover girl, gracing all of its 62 editions.

"Katy's music and attitude have universal appeal to young women everywhere," Joanna Coles, editor in chief of Cosmopolitan, says in a statement.

"She crosses all cultural boundaries," Coles added of Perry. "Her music is soulful and empowering in equal measure. She's the first Cosmo global icon."

It's not a big stretch. Perry's major label debut, One of the Boys, produced four top hits, and its follow-up, Teenage Dream, debuted at No. 1 in eight countries.

Prism has three more smash hits in "Dark Horse," "Unconditionally," and "Birthday," and she is the most followed person on Twitter with 53 million followers.

In the magazine, the global sensation will reveal if she'd ever get back together with ex John Mayer, with whom she split a second time last February.

What's in a name? As it turns out, maybe everything.

Since Shakespeare first posited the question in Romeo and Juliet, actors have been using fake names to land professional roles. Not only did it allow them some semblance of privacy before the dawn of Wikipedia, but let's face it, some people just aren't born with great names.

Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor? Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta? Quite a mouthful.

If an actor or musician's entire career is dedicated to being someone else - a character or personality, perhaps - then a good stage name can go a long way to making that career explode.

More celebrities use pseudonyms than you might think. In fact, here are 67 stars who don't use their real names. Which ones did you know before viewing this gallery?

Lorde
Musical sensation Lorde was given the name Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor at birth. We'd probably go with Lorde, too.

Summer is the season of sun, sand, and going blonde. But not all of us can pull of that look. Where do we turn when we a little want hair inspiration?

Why, we look to celebrity hairstyles, of course. We surf the web. We clip magazine pictures ... or tear them out of the magazines in waiting rooms when receptionists aren't looking.

What we're saying is, we find our favorite stars whose features most closely resemble our own and head off to the stylist for a little freshening up.

But what happens when our favorite celebrity makes a bad choice regarding cut or color and we copy her!? WE. ARE. DOOMED!

Victoria Beckham
Victoria Beckham rocked the blonde bob for quite a while, but it sort of reminds us of Kate Gosselin. Her brunette look is WAY better.

Never fear! We're here to save you from a bad dye job. If you're thinking of going blonde, use these 11 celebrities as a cautionary tale.

They should NEVER go blonde. Like, ever.

(And no, Taylor Swift isn't one of them.)

Need a little more hair-spiration? Check out the hottest hair trend right now: Ombre' locks! We're especially loving Nina Dobrev's ombre look, and these others:

A recent study of past and present pop music sought to rank the greatest singers of all time on the basis of their vocal range.

We think it's safe to say the results are... surprising.

Taylor Swift - #77
Taylor glammed up for the red carpet. Photos like this remind us why she's had so many boyfriends.

For example, if you can predict ahead of time which two crooners tied for the top spot, well then you, sir or madam, have quite the ear for music.

You should probably replace all three judges on American Idol and produce Caleb Johnson's first number one record.

In other words, you can't predict this list. No one can.

We've all got our ideas of what constitutes good and bad music and this list throws concepts like creative ingenuity, songwriting ability and stage presence right out the window and judges artists solely by the highest and lowest notes they can hit.

Katy Perry just broke up with John Mayer back in February, but now it seems another relationship has come to an end for the famously unlucky-in-love songstress.

Katy Perry and Diplo only began dating last month, but In Touch reports that the 35-year-old DJ and music producer has dumped KP over her unwillingness to commit.

  • Katy Perry Red Carpet Image
  • Diplo Photo

"Diplo broke up with her because she does not want to be in a serious relationship," a source tells the tabloid. "She's doing okay and not too sad about it. They wanted different things."

We're guessing by "different things," the insider means Diplo wanted a mature relationship and Katy wanted to date every type of man on the planet.
