Tom Cruise admitted in a deposition something we've long assumed was true: Katie Holmes divorced him in part because of his controversial Scientology faith.

The actor was deposed in the $50 million libel suit he is filing against a celebrity news magazine that claimed he abandoned daughter Suri Cruise.

He denies this vehemently (which should be obvious if he's filing a lawsuit over it), despite the fact that no one takes In Touch Weekly at all seriously.

No one would've ever thought that Tom abandoned Suri, but nevertheless, he was grilled by ITW's counsel as part of his quest to make them pay.

The lawyer for the tabloid magazine repeatedly asked if Katie Holmes' divorce from him was because of the Church, with which he is famously aligned.

Katie Holmes may say her decision to divorce Tom Cruise is over Scientology, but sources close to the actor says it's not and she's motivated by something else.

What, they won't say. Yet.

A source close to Cruise tells TMZ that Holmes' camp is leaking false stories to the media claiming she's trying to save Suri from the grips of Scientology.

But, as the well-connected Tom source put it, "She [Katie] was totally committed."

"She had a great enthusiasm for Scientology and would voluntarily and gladly participate in it, including when Tom was off shooting movies."

"This is not a fight over religion. It's being used as a way to hurt Tom."

It's possible, of course, that Katie was committed to it because it was important to Tom, but soured on it of late because of Suri, as reports claim.

Still, Cruise sources claim Suri is being used as a weapon against him and that his now-estranged wife is making it very hard for him to talk to her.

Tom Cruise is reportedly gearing up for a fight.

Having been blindsided last week by his spouse, he is ready for a custody battle over Suri Cruise and preparing to counter-file for divorce in California.

According to celebrity gossip sources, Cruise wants to ensure that Katie doesn't get sole custody of Suri, which she asked for in her New York filing.

Cruise's camp says the divorce can only take place in New York if the marriage occurred there or the spouse has been living there continuously.

Despite the couple owning an N.Y. apartment deeded in her name, he will argue that both live in L.A. and she doesn't meet N.Y. residency requirements.

This is significant as N.Y. courts are perceived as much more likely to award sole custody in a contentious divorce than their California counterparts.

An insider added of Cruise's game plan: "There is absolutely no way that he is going to let Katie have sole custody. The lines are being drawn."

The somewhat surprising Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce came out of nowhere, allegedly prompted by her fear of Scientology groups corrupting Suri.

The catalyst for the Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce appears to have been fear of their daughter being immersed in Scientology, according to reports.

Specifically, a Scientology organization known as Sea Organization (or Sea Org), where the religion is taught to kids as young as five, was the final straw.

Kids can be sent to live there without their parents to learn the highest levels of the belief system. Tom is said to be a huge supporter; Katie not so much.

Even before she filed for sole custody of Suri, Katie and Tom had been arguing over the little girl's indoctrination into Scientology. She's now six years old.

Sea Org has been often likened to a boot camp; ex-Scientology members have been outspoken against its military-like conditions on several occasions.

Members of Sea Org must sign "a one-billion-year pledge to symbolize their eternal commitment to the religion and it is still signed by all members today."

When Holmes and Cruise first hooked up in 2005, Jessica Feshbach, who had been with Sea Org since 1994, became her Scientology handler/chaperone.

In one of Katie's first interviews after getting together with Tom, Feshbach was described by a writer for W magazine as "cold-eyed" and "a third-wheel."

Katie, 33, reportedly felt the only way to save Suri from being shipped off to Sea Org was to file for divorce from Tom, 49, and seek sole legal custody.

The church denies, meanwhile, that the actress is being stalked by Scientology minions around NYC, a report that circulated over the weekend.

The impending Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce apparently has the actress feeling uneasy and convinced the Church of Scientology now views her as a threat.

As such, Holmes believes the church put a team on her tail.

Katie reportedly believes that in recent weeks, as discord between herself and Tom grew and they began living apart - even while both were in New York City in mid-June - Scientology higher-ups have been following her every move.

It's unclear if this is in fact the case, but Scientology has been linked to such activity for years, and sources say "mysterious" men have photographed Katie when she's out, with vehicles spotted near her apartment around the clock.

A white Cadillac Escalade and black Mercedes SUV have been outside her place for the past week. Again, it's unclear who, if anyone, is tailing Katie Holmes.

The actress filed for sole custody of Suri in New York last week, a move Tom allegedly had no idea was coming. His ties to Scientology are said to be a big reason.

Katie Holmes surprised many of us by filing for divorce from Tom Cruise, but the apparent reason behind her decision would likely be anyone's first guess.

Scientology.

Sources say the Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce is happening for precisely that reason, specifically her concern that Suri will be introduced to it.

Their daughter is now six, the age where Scientology will begin to be a major part of her life, and Katie fears Suri will be dragged in too deep.

Holmes has never fully committed to Scientology, TMZ reports, despite her ties with the church and more than five years of marriage to Tom.

Many observers felt their marriage would never work for this reason; Katie respected Tom's beliefs, but raising their child his way a different story.

As she's grown, the couple had been arguing over Suri with greater frequency, and Katie eventually filed for divorce to protect the little girl.

A key detail in the Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce filing was the location in which it was filed: The 33-year-old actress made if official in New York.

Poor Suri Cruise. Almost five, girl is "suffering the effects" of Tom Cruise's religion, Scientology, according to Katie Holmes' parents and Life & Style.

Scientologists treat kids like adults, "independent individuals capable of making their own decisions," reports the magazine's so-called expert.

For Suri Cruise, that means 1 a.m. dinners, playing with penis-shaped candies and still being allowed to use a pacifier, leaving Katie's folks "really upset."

Suri With Katie

NO BOUNDARIES: That's what Tom and Katie allegedly set for Suri.

"They're very worried that Tom isn't letting Suri enjoy the childhood she deserves because of his Scientology beliefs," says an alleged inside source.

"She often throws tantrums when she's out with Katie and Tom," the insider says, recalling that on March 15, Katie couldn't get Suri into her car seat.

"As always, Suri won and didn't have to sit in her car seat."

Breaking news right here, people. Four-year-old girls can get be temperamental and couples have different ways of raising kids. Stop the presses.

It's been awhile since we've read an old-fashioned Tom Cruise / Scientology expose full of outrageous allegations, but this certainly makes up for lost time.

According to Radar Online, the actor demanded his custom-built bus be the base for Katie Holmes' "Purification Rundown Program" prior to marrying her.

The trailer-style bus was allegedly built by the church's underpaid staffers, who put nearly 9,000 hours of "slave labor into its production for the star.

The FBI is reportedly investigating the Church of Scientology for human trafficking and using free labor, in part to meet the demands of its celebrity icon, Cruise.

Tom insisted on a custom drawer for his slippers because the neat-freak didn't want anyone walking on the carpet, a former high-ranking church staffer claims.

In an internal email, Cruise's requests for upgrades were outlined, according to the church's former Inspector General Mark Rathbun. So what does it matter?

Well, not exactly. While Katie Holmes' Broadway debut was well received by critics and theater-goers, it wasn't a big hit with some of the angry peeps above.

Protesters outside the "All My Sons" production were out to express their displeasure with the cult, er, religion of Scientology and its best-known ambassador, Tom Cruise, who was personally on hand to watch his style-impaired wife do her thing.

Whether this story about TomKat is true or completely made up (Britney Spears getting pregnant by Adnan Ghalib-style), it's not any less funny.

Ex-Scientologist, Marc Headley, is the latest to claim Katie Holmes was Tom Cruise's fourth choice as his wife and mother of his child.

Tom Cruise on Today

Before TomKat were created, Tom Cruise allegedly held a casting call for wives under the guise of a Mission: Impossible movie audition.

Headley says Tom told BFF and Scientology leader, David Miscavige, that he was having trouble finding babes, so the church sent out a casting call.

Scientologists Sofia Milos and Erika Christensen were apparently presented to him, but the discerning Cruise wanted bigger celebrities.

Tom Cruise shows off wife choice #4, Katie Holmes!

Headley said they went for Jennifer Garner, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Alba, in that order... Jennifer and Jessica didn't accept this wonderful invite, but Scarlett Johansson took the bait and came in for an audition. Briefly.

When ScarJo arrived and found out it was the Scientology Center in Hollywood, of course, she freaked out and bolted without doing a tape.

Katie Holmes, it turns out was their fourth choice. Tom apparently said he knew she was the one right away when she showed up for her "audition."

Maybe he's a big Dawson's Creek fan. In any case, Katie was brainwashed ASAP, Suri Cruise was spawned a year later, and the rest is history.

Hey, John McCain was running fourth in some Republican polls in December, and the Giants' fourth receiver, David Tyree, became a Super Bowl hero as New York upset the evil Patriots of New England. So hold your head up high, Katie!
