Following many years of dating, and countless misleading tabloid cover stories, Kate Middleton and Prince William announced their engagement this week.

How do the former's parents feel about their daughter becoming an official part of the royal family in 2011? Pretty darn great!

"I would just like to say that Carole and I are absolutely delighted by today's announcement and thrilled by the prospect of a wedding sometime next year," said father Michael Middleton. "They make a lovely couple. They're great fun to be with and we've had a lot of laughs together. We wish them every happiness for the future."

The Wate-ing Game: William and Kate have made their love official.

William and Kate (who will be referred to as "Catherine" going forward) also met with the press this morning. At the media session, the Prince said he proposed with his mother's engagement ring (SEE IT BELOW).

"It is very special to me," William said. "It was my way to make sure my mother did not miss out on today and the excitement that we are going to spend the rest of our lives together."

It's been a rumor for months, but it's now an official Royal announcement: Kate Middleton and Prince William are engaged.

The two have been together for years, with a couple brief break-ups along the way. Already regulars in the pages of supermarket tabloids, Kate and William can expect even more coverage as they move toward a wedding that's scheduled to take place some time in 2011.

Ahead for Kate Middleton and Prince William: love, marriage... and $20 billion.

William proposed during a vacation in Kenya last month. He has informed the Queen of his intentions and also sought permission from Middleton's father.

In part, the official statement by Great Britain reads:

Stop us if you've heard this before: Prince William and Kate Middleton are engaged and planning an enormous wedding.

The likely nuptials between this royal couple are a popular tabloid topic both overseas and domestically. Sources speculate that over $20 billion will be at stake when vows are eventually exchanged.

Now, The Daily Mail claims to know when the ceremony will take place: on the second weekend of August 2011, as insiders report senior personnel at Westminster Abbey have been alerted to keep that date open for a major event there.

The Prince and the Girlfriend

This iconic building was the venue for Princess Diana's funeral service 13 years ago. Said an anonymous source who works at Westminster Abbey:

"A date has been earmarked for a royal wedding next year... only the most senior personnel here have been privy to the discussions, but my understanding is that the issue was raised when the Queen visited here back in May."

Kate Middleton and Prince William have either set a date for their wedding...

... or called it quits due to a lack of one.

It all depends on which tabloid story one believes, as two of the nation's most ridiculous, least reliable publications have come out with opposing reports this week. See for yourself:

  • A Ruined Romance
  • Wedding Tell-All!

On one hand, it makes sense for Middleton to "cozy up to [William's] best friend's brother," as teased above; she's allegedly angry at him for continually cheating over the years.

Then again, the couple reportedly stands to inherit $20 billion if they tie the knot. Could they really turn such a sum down?

Of course, these reports are all based on tabloid tales that quote anonymous sources; change facts more often than Bachelor contestants call off engagements; and capitalize whatever headlines will sell the most copies each week.

Without an Royal engagement even announced, just click on the pics below to see what nonsense various rags have claimed about Middleton and William over the last few months:

Forget the Royal Wedding of the Century.

We may be looking at an all-time royal mess.

Despite engagement rumors floating over her head, Kate Middleton is reportedly considering an end to her relationship with Prince William. The reason? A four-year old photo that proves he cheated on her with British singer Natasha Hamilton.

It's unclear why this picture, which was published in tabloids at the time, is causing a stir now - but insiders say it's due to Kate's realization that William has been "disrespectful" to her for a long time, and will continue to be even if they get married.

"Kate is now being warned by royal courtiers that she must be prepared for William to follow in his philandering father's footsteps and take a mistress," a source told The National Enquirer.

Cheater

The tabloid even quotes one of the Queen's advisors, who allegedly said to Middleton:

"It won't be IF he does, my dear. It will be WHEN he does - and then you must simply turn a blind eye."

Kate felt "physically ill" at this possibility, the source reports, causing her to rethink the wedding. We have no idea why. According to Mel Gibson, a woman's place is on her knees, not on some high horse.

Give William a break, girlfriend!

Prince William turned 28 years old earlier this month, but there's really no need to get him a birthday present.

The guy is about to be $20 billion richer.

While it's being overhyped by tabloids around the world, there's little doubt that William will eventually marry long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton. Once this marriage takes place, sources say the couple will inherent more money than even Heather Mills would know what to do with.

British journalist Katie Nicholl lists the items coming the pair's way as "crown jewels, property, the royal art collection, a palace, and a new Audi."

She estimates the jewelry covering Kate on her wedding day alone to be valued at around $57 million.

Best Weding Gift Ever

Prince William and Kate Middleton will soon get married, inherit billions, rule England and... wait! Justin Bieber has a secret girlfriend?!?

Moreover, William will become the owner of Queen Elizabeth's private art collection, which includes masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci and is worth at least $15 billion.

Yes, that's billion. Somewhere, Khloe Kardashian is realizing she married the wrong man for money and attention.

This week's Life & Style features a cover story that claims Robert Pattinson dumped Kristen Stewart because she's too sad of a human being.

Incredibly, this is NOT the most ridiculously false, misleading report in a new magazine issue, as Star earns that dishonor for the following headline:

Kate Middleton Pregnant?

As soon as this cover made the Internt rounds, a royal palace spokesperson labeled the Kate Middleton rumor as "complete nonsense."

It's not the first time Kate and Prince William have been in the news this month. Tabloids have amped up their coverage of the world famous twosome once again, as rumors of an engagement and huge wedding persist.

Neither side of the couple has said much in recent days. Probably because they're embarrassed about their country's recent World Cup tie with the United States.

At some point, Kate Middleton and Prince William will likely get married.

Here's to hoping the ceremony takes place in a town hall civil ceremony!

That would show these annoying supermarket tabloids, who continue to cash in on the mere presumptions of what this royal wedding will look like.

In the latest example of anonymous sources citing unspecified facts regarding the couple's plans, OK! Weekly reports that William and Kate will attempt to duplicate the nuptials of the former's late mother, Princess Diana.

"Princess Diana talked about what she wanted her sons’ weddings to be like even when she was pregnant with them," said a source.

Royal Cover Story

Ironically, Princess Diana was also killed because the paparazzi were chasing her limo. So it's nice to see celebrity gossip reporters have learned from their mistakes and are giving William and Kate room to breathe.

Sigh.
