Dancing With the Stars remains enormously popular, but has it lost its luster thanks to 2010's two most notable contenders, Bristol Palin and Kate Gosselin?

The series enjoyed renewed prominence thanks to those two, but at what cost? Is it really even about celebrities learning to dance anymore? Or dancing?

As recently as mid-2009 (amazing, we know), Kate Gosselin was just a random reality star with a bad haircut, douchebag husband and eight kids.

Bad as it Gets

Has DWTS been tarnished by this tandem?

Dancing With the Stars unleashed the power of the tabloids by casting her, then upped the ante with Bristol Palin, daughter of former politician Sarah.

People came out in droves to support or tear them down. There was no middle ground between them supporting their kids or being absentee moms.

They got as far as they did by being on the front of tabloids, becoming TV personalities that divided people and generating massive controversy.

Last night's Dancing with the Stars finale saw the coronation of a new champion, and also the return of some memorable cast members who aren't quite as good.

When it comes to rhythm, Kate Gosselin is the anti-Nicole Scherzinger. While we give her credit for trying, last night's effort was LOL worthy ... especially the end.

The reality TV mom returned to the stage Tuesday after shilling for the revamped Kate Plus 8 and the new Twist of Kate (wonder if TLC paid for that ad) of course.

It was not pretty. The only thing worse than her dancing is her relentless whining in rehearsal - even after she insists she wants to have a better attitude, no less.

But the best part, however unintentionally? The end, in which Kate flew over the stage and stared awkwardly into a fish-eye lens. What was that supposed to be?

Who the heck knows, but it's worth repeated viewing ...

On a side note, by request: Would you hit it?

Kate Gosselin is moving on, but she still misses Dancing with the Stars.

"It was just about two weeks before I was like, ‘Hey, I’m resettled back into life. I feel like a normal mom again,’” Kate said, while also admitting she went through “major withdrawals” after leaving the show. “It’s really difficult."

"There is a post-DWTS depression that they fail to tell you about.”

The hard-working mom says the feelings stem from missing her castmates, whom she refers to as “family.” Not sure if the feeling is mutual, but hey.

If nothing else, you can't accuse Kate of laziness. In the weeks since she was booted from Dancing with the Stars, the mother of eight has launched her new reality series, Twist of Kate and Kate Plus 8 reloaded, and has a new gig with ET.

More Bad Dancing

Kate Gosselin will return to the Dancing stage for this week's finale.

Her new role? A correspondent for Dancing with the Stars, natch.

“[It] has been extremely exciting to hold a microphone, and I found that I am loving this side of it,” Kate said backstage at the Dancing with the Stars semifinals, where she was conducting on-camera interviews. “I can talk. We all knew that."

Indeed. Adding “correspondent” to her resumé, which already includes reality-TV star, author, promotional speaker and ... oh, right, mom to Cara, Mady, Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah and Joel, is all part of Kate’s plan keep focused.

Or scattered, however you want to look at it. She says she needs parenting help, and we're starting to realize why. She has about as many jobs as she has kids.

Eight more than Jon Gosselin in the former department, so that counts for something, but still. You gotta chill out, Kate. Settle down. Stop and smell the roses.

Eliminated a few weeks ago, Kate Gosselin discusses her impending return to Dancing with the Stars for the finale, and what it will entail. Here's a hint - flying.

Yep, we'll see Kate soar, if only literally. The famous mom told Entertainment Tonight that her last dance number will "involve flying" on the season-ender.

"I am dancing a strange combination of two songs," the celebrity news show correspondent said. "An old dance, a new dance, and it involves flying."

Should Gosselin fall in her death-defying stunt, Jon Gosselin will try his best not to laugh pro dancer Anna Trebunskaya offered to look after her eight children.

Hey, woman said she needs parenting help as it is ...

Kate Dances

Kate typically dances very low ... to the ground, and in terms of scoring.

"We can split them all between the cast and they're going to visit each other every two days," Anna joked of the little soon to be reloaded Kate Plus 8 starlets.

Last month, a source said Kate has been "moping" since leaving the show: "Kate misses the media coverage," the source said. "She got used to the publicity."

But now Gosselin's back in the limelight, at least for the short term, as Entertainment Tonight's special correspondent for DWTS, Monday through Wednesday.

Enjoy it while it lasts, Kate. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Dancing with the Stars contestants come and go. Some are missed more than others. Most recently, Pamela Anderson got a terrific send-off this week.

Kate Gosselin? Not quite.

Unlike the good riddance attitude expressed about the mother of eight's departure a few weeks back, people are actually sad the buxom blonde left.

A Dancing With the Stars source says the cast and crew are all bummed. "Everyone was sad to see her go," the insider dishes. "She was really fun."

"Great to work with and always so nice to everyone. Definitely unlike [Gosselin]."

But what about all those diva demands that happened early on in the season?

  • Gosselin and Dovolani
  • Damian Whitewood, Pamela Anderson Pic

Only one of these couples is missed by their counterparts.

"Yeah [Anderson] definitely had her moments, but everyone did," the source adds. "Throughout the season it was pretty much just a drop in the bucket, though."

The proverbial Kate Gosselin bucket, however? That was overflowing. Good thing she's returning for the finale too, right everyone? Hello? Guys? [Crickets]

Aside from wanting her lighting to be perfect, Pamela Anderson "always treated the crew with respect, which is pretty unusual around these celeb parts."

"Sure [Pam] could be a diva, but she's allowed. At least she's been a celebrity for a while and isn't famous for having a douchebag ex and lots of kids."

Pretty much.

So now that the Dancing with the Stars sideshows are gone and the true talent remains, who are you rooting for among the final five pairs?

She's baaaaaack!

Noooooooooo!

Kate Gosselin confirmed earlier this week that she's returning to Dancing With the Stars. Don't worry, they didn't let her back into the fold to boost ratings. She's just tangoing her way to the show's May 24 and 25 season finales.

"I think there better be one more dance left in me," the Kate Plus 8 star wrote on her blog. "C'mon, I know you all missed my unique dance style!"

So much, it's scary.

Since she got the boot April 20, Gosselin says she's mostly "hung up" her dancing shoes: "The day has come... my dance shoes (all six dirty well-used pairs of them) already have begun collecting dust," the mother of eight blogged.

Kate on DWTS

You can't keep a dancing queen down. Or Kate Gosselin even.

She still misses it sometimes, though: "My eyes landed on my abandoned dance shoes and a wave of sadness mixed with a longing came over me," she said.

"Ohhhh suddenly I missed EVERYTHING about dancing ... not only the friends I have made and stay in touch with almost daily, but also learning the steps and even the complete fear of sudden death that the dance floor caused me! Gulp!"

Better than the feeling of sudden death Jon Gosselin and Ellen Ross will feel after Kate snaps and takes them both out in a fit of rage, that's for sure.

But she did "a bit of reflecting" and decided she's happy "reintegrat[ing] back into home life. Without a doubt, Dancing with the Stars was a life-changing experience," she concluded. "I wouldn't trade the experience for anything!"

It will be interesting to see what Kate has planned for May 24.

Who are you rooting for on Dancing with the Stars?

Kate Gosselin got the boot from Dancing With the Stars Tuesday night.

The remaining dancers and cast collectively thought: It's about time.

Kate Gosselin and Children

The mother of eight caused drama before the show even premiered in March, acting like a diva during rehearsals and making crazy demands on set.

Crazy demands like crew members not being allowed to look at her. Seriously. So you can imagine the rejuvenated vibe now that she's finally gone.

"Everyone couldn't be more relieved," a source says ... but just wait 'til they have to deal with Rachel Uchitel. That'll pose a whole new set of issues.

GOOD RIDDANCE, GOSSELIN: That's the cast and crew's message for Kate.

"We had to walk on eggshells. At least we don't have to worry about where our eyes can or can't drift off to now. Kate just thought that everyone was out to get her. That's why she had all of those crazy rules, like how she was to be approached."

There are two ways to look at this, of course.

Kate gets enormous attention, much of it negative, from mainstream and celebrity gossip press. This understandably gets to her, prompting a difficult attitude.

On the flip side, rather than being "out to get her," perhaps it's the media's role to point out what a dreadful human being she is when she leaves us no choice.

It's a celeb gossip chicken-egg scenario.

"[We] felt bad for the bad press she got," another Dancing with the Stars source dished. "But sometimes it was deserved!" Sums it up perfectly, if you ask us.

With Nicole Scherzinger, Pamela Anderson - the woman's got the booty and skillz - Evan Lysacek et al. going strong, the cast is pumped to get back to work.

Kate Gosselin was emotional after being voted off Dancing with the Stars.

She's also upset that no man will ever love her, her own children tease her, DWTS co-stars dubbed her"Hate Gosselin" and strangers slash her tires.

It's worth noting that the amusing last four Kate fun facts are courtesy of the new issue of In Touch Weekly, and therefore are likely completely bogus.

Well, maybe not the Hate Gosselin moniker. We can see that. As sad as she is about leaving, and about life, however, she says the kids are worse.

Though she claims she is okay leaving, her eight children "will be upset, definitely," she said. "They will be shattered, in fact." What total bull$h!t.

Kate claims her elimination "crushed" her kids. Someone needs to crush her.

She said she's not "letting them watch" her elimination, so "they'll be OK. They'll be glad to have me back, but won't get to see me dance anymore. It's tough."

Also tough? Dying alone and getting teased by your own kids when your dancing sucks. Gotta be brutal. Here's "Hate" receiving the final verdict last night ...

Are you sad Kate Gosselin was eliminated?

Kate Gosselin was sent packing on Dancing With the Stars Tuesday.

After their fifth consecutive brutal week, she and partner Tony Dolovani could not stave off the inevitable. When her fate was announced, she was speechless.

"I need a minute," she said, tearfully. "I am so honored to have been here. It was a good experience. I cannot wait to watch the rest of these people Monday."

In the bottom two for the second time this season, despite being decent Monday night and all season long, were Pamela Anderson and Damian Whitewood.

A Tearful Farewell

Kate Gosselin reacts to her Dancing with the Stars ouster.

Tony Dovolani, who has clashed repeatedly with her, then said he is "proud of Kate. I know she gets a lot of criticism out ... She has eight kids and is a single mom ... she showed up every single day. I thought she danced beautifully."

Now she can show up every day at home, right Jon Gosselin?

If nothing else, it was a classy exit and a fairly long run. To her fan base, Kate said "Thank you for believing in me probably more than I believed in myself."

She seemed defeated and resigned before the results show, but she has nothing to be ashamed of. Click to enlarge some of Kate's top dancing moments ...

Are you sad Kate was eliminated on Dancing with the Stars?

Kate Gosselin turned in an awful performance last night on Dancing with the Stars. That's nothing new, but the judges were particularly harsh, she felt.

She came in confident but now her "spirits are down" after the judges ripped her Foxtrot to shreds - her score of 15 was the night's lowest - afterward.

Judge Bruno Tonioli told Tony Dovolani he'd have been better off dancing with "a coat hanger." Jon Gosselin would likely prefer to have married one.

Kate told ET that the judges' remarks definitely got to her.

"I had fun, and they didn't seem to notice," she said. "It's starting to creep in a little bit. Tonight, I was trying to hold back some horrible emotions."

Those smiles faded fast.

Defeated, she adds: "Probably not on live TV should I be standing there crying in front of the judges ... It's getting difficult. I'm depressed, sort of."

Tony Dovolani jokingly agreed, saying he'd had "fun... up until the judges' part."

Was there anything at all in the judges' remarks Kate can take as encouragement? "Carrie Ann [Inaba] said there was a teeny bit of gracefulness."

Gotta start somewhere. Follow the jump to see Kate's awfulness in its entirety ...
