While Lost viewers continue to debate the identity of the smoke monster, there's no such mystery surrounding Hollywood's most monstrous matriarch.

According to one popular celebrity gossip tabloid, it's Kate Gosselin.

The latest issue of Us Weekly goes to great lengths to explain why this reality star is pretty much the worst mother on the planet. According to traitorous nurse Angela Krall, who gladly accepted lots of cash for turning on her former employer, Kate...

• ... has spent 21 of the last 30 days on the road at various speaking engagements;
• ... fired 40 employees in three months;
• ... chose to remain at a restaurant during her son's trip to the emergency room;
• ... and is obsessed with money and fame.

Kate's brother, meanwhile, has gone public with a marriage contract she and her husband have supposedly agreed to.

Do we automatically believe these allegations? No. But it doesn't speak very well for Kate Gosseln that so many people close to her are willing to sell her out to the tabloids, does it?

We were wrong. The Jon and Kate Gosselin cheating scandal can get even stranger.

At first, it seemed like rumors of a Deanna Hummel sex tape would be the pinnacle of this story; but then Kate was accused of starting the infidelity merry-go-round by having an affair with bodyguard Steve Neild.

Now, Kevin and Jodi Kreider - Kate ’s brother and sister-in-law - are milking their share of this cash cow coming forward about details of an alleged marriage contract that allows Jon Gosselin to date other women while filming the couple's TLC series Jon & Kate Plus 8.

Yes, a marriage contract.

“All we know is what Jon told us, that Kate came to him with a contract saying he could have girlfriends and that he can do his own thing,” the Kreiders said to Radar. “In exchange, Jon needs to show up for filming. But otherwise he has the freedom, certain days, to do whatever he wants."

The couple then spoke for everyone that follows this relationsip, stating: "This is a train wreck for all to see.”

This photo becomes far less adorable when you consider the possibility that Jon Gosselin has permission to cheat on his wife.

The star of numerous infidelity rumors, along with Jon & Kate Plus 8, told Entertainment Weekly that her spiky bob hairstyle reflects her feisty personality and:

"Everybody wants it!"

Sadly - sorry, "everybody" - the look (seen below) isn't easy to pull off.

"I have very, very thick hair, so it's not going to work for everybody," Gosselin said. "I've seen people come through the book line with thin hair and it's just won't work. My hair stylist gets calls from all across the country."

Celebrity gossip tabloids around the nation didn't need Emeril Lagasse to cook them up a perfect meal this week.

Various publications took one part reality TV couple, mixed it with multiple rumors of an affair by both sides, added a sprinkle of a sex tape and came up with fodder for days on end.

Indeed, one of the most buzzed-about stories in Hollywood these days centers around Jon and Kate Gosselin, heretofore innocent, admired, seemingly innocuous parents of eight adorable children.

But in the latest issue of People, Kate comes clean about the new light in which she sees her husband.

"I don't know that we're in the same place anymore, that we want the same thing," she said. "I've been struggling with the question of 'Who is this person?' for a while. I remember where I was the first time I heard her name. It's one of those things where you can try to make it go away, but there's blaring, red flashing lights." 

Wow. Harsh words, ones probably not best to share with a national magazine if you're actually concerned about your marriage.

Meanwhile, Us Weekly is turning the marital tables on Kate. Its latest edition highlights her rumored affair with bodyguard Steve Neild.

Neild - who once worked for Bill Clinton, so knows something about infidelity! - and Gosseln are "very physical, often touching each other," said an employee at a recent promotional appearance for Jon & Kate Plus 8, adding:

"She was gently poking him, giving him little love pats, totally unlike the slapping she does with Jon. She and Steve were joking around so much, I actually wondered if they were having an affair. There's a lot of open affection between them."

When Jon Gosselin was accused of cheating on his wife, the reality star issued a simple, relatively calm statement that denied all charges.

The same can't be said for Kate Gosselin.

A day after reports linked her to her bodyguard and/or personal trainer, the mother of eight went off on paparazzi and irresponsible gossip tabloids everywhere.

"The next story coming out from the animals that stalk us is about our security person and his family," Kate told People. "Already the allegations they're making about me are disgusting, unthinkable, unfathomable, and I am horrified."

Referring to Steve Neild, the couple's bodyguard, and his family, Gosselin added:

"These are people who absolutely love us and want to see us through to the end. Of course, both of them travel with us at times, and we've spent holidays together, because, in this situation, your circle grows smaller and smaller, and it's very natural to become friends with your manager, your publicist, your security team ... they're the only people you have left. And now they're coming under fire."

Overall, Kate says she has no idea how to stop the supposedly erroneous reporting.

"The scary thing for me is [the tabloids] are going to take information and create a story. It's a matter of, 'When will they stop?' They're going to keep going, and they'll make up stuff to connect the dots."

Seriously, who would have guessed that the most sordid, convoluted story about adultery these days would be swirling around the parents of eight children?

Following a week that spotlighted Jon Gosselin's alleged cheating ways, Star Magazine says it's discovered the reason why one half of the couple in the title for Jon & Kate Plus 8 had an affair with Deanna Hummel:

Because his wife cheated on him first!

"I heard Kate was getting way too close with her personal trainer, so Jon started cheating," Trisha Berlin, a fellow Pennsylvania resident, told Star, adding that Kate has also being linked to her hunky bodyguard, known as "Mr. Gray" to bloggers and pictured here.

Another source told the tabloid that "Jon goes out to meet other women because Kate has given him the cold shoulder," which is evident to anyone that watches their reality show.

Last week, Kate addressed the scandal during an interview on the Today show, stating: "We just need to weather this storm, just like all the other storms that we've been through."

Hmm... might she have been referring to her own disloyal ways? Discuss!

Kate Gosselin says she's not a celebrity and she's handling rumors of her husband's infidelity in private.

So, naturally, the mother of eight is appearing on every talk show she can!

Following a week where the rumor patrol was out in full force - reporting on an affair between Jon Gosselin and Deanna Hummel, running accusations about Deanna from her brother and even leaking news about a supposed sex tape of Jon's mistress - Kate appeared on Larry King Live last night.

She addressed a number of topics:

On a lack of privacy: "Everyone wants to know everything about us. And I feel like this is a situation where, you know, you can't believe everything that you read. You know that. I know that."

On her kids being exposed to the rumors: "They attend a very quiet, private school where, you know, people aren't paying attention to that. They're investing their time in their kids' education and activities. And, no, they are, at this point unaware. But they are very aware that we love them very much."

On Jon's poor judgment: "I am not a celebrity... I am a mom and a wife. And I feel that Jon is having difficult times realizing that, you know, you can't go to the grocery store without people whipping out their cell phones, calling everyone they know and taking pictures of you. He is dealing very poorly with it."

Kate then read the following statement from her husband on-air:
"These allegations are false and just plain hurtful," read the statement. "As I adjust to the attention that comes from being in the public eye, I need to be more careful and aware of who I'm associating with and where I'm spending my time. The bottom line is I did not cheat on Kate.

I'm sorry for putting my family in this awkward position, given some poor decisions and bad judgments I've made recently. I'm working through this difficult time with my family and my family is my top priority."

Is Kate Gosselin resigned to the fact that her husband had an affair?

In an interview this morning with Meredith Vieira, one half of the couple at the center of Jon & Kate Plus 8 doesn't go into detail about the allegations surrounding her husband and Deanna Hummel.

But Kate talks like a woman scorned, like someone trying to put the pieces of a broken marriage back together.

"We're dealing with it just like everybody else does," Gosselin said, while promoting her new book, Eight Little Faces. (Jon pulled out of the interview at the last moment, as Vieira read a statement in which he denied cheating on his wife.)

"It's kind of ironic since we do have a reality show and people see the good, the bad and the ugly," Kate added. "But there are those things we keep to ourselves, and we're working through it together, and that's the important thing."

As for the future, Gosselin seemed hopeful, albeit unsure.

"We're not perfect," Kate later said. "I don't have all the answers... We're doing our best and learning how we go... We just need to weather this storm."

Earlier today, we reported on a source that swears Jon Gosselin is cheating on his wife with Deanna Hummel.

However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, both halves of this reality TV couple responded to the allegations and appeared to stand by one another (with Kate unable to resist a jab at Jon's judgment, of course).

Here's what each had to say about the story and the photo of Jon and Deanna leaving a club together:

Jon Gosselin: It's really upsetting. I may be guilty of choosing the wrong time and place to hang out with my friends, but I am not guilty of cheating on my wife. It hurts me to see what it's done to my family, and it's scary to know that these tabloids are in town constantly following us and even paying locals large amounts of money to contribute to these negative stories. It's even gotten so bad that [one tabloid] has reached out to a youth pastor from our church, which in my eyes is completely unacceptable.

Kate Gosselin: It's disturbing and unfortunate that these tabloids have gone as far as they have to try and bring us down. Jon's poor judgment and irresponsible behavior has also without a doubt caused some added tension and stress between the two of us.

Jon and Kate Gosselin were a happy couple on the day they renewed their wedding vows. Eight children and one reality TV show later? Not as much.
