Might America finally be coming to its senses?

Granted, far too many people still somehow fear that terrorist suspects currently held at Guantanamo Bay would escape from maximum security prisons if held there inside the country.

But at least far fewer people watched this week's installments of Jon & Kate Plus 8. That's a start!

Fueled by ongoing gossip stories about the marriage between Jon and Kate Gosselin, the May 25 premiere of the show attracted a mind-numbing 9.8 millions viewers, earning higher ratings than the season finale of Lost on ABC.

However, the two newest episodes of the series, which aired on Monday, scored only 5.5 million and 6 million viewers, respectively.

That's still far more than we'd like to see, but we can't expect everyone to tune out at once. We can only hope that the prospect of having sex with Kate Gosselin helps turn more people off for next week.

According to reports, Kate Gosselin's brother is shopping his story for $30,000.

Meanwhile, according to Deanna Hummel's sibling, something a lot (man) juicier is on the market.

Jason Hummel has already made a name for himself by confirming an affair between his sister and Jon Gosselin. But that's not enough. He wants to make even more, disgusting money off the relationship.

Seen here, Deanna Hummel gives Jon Gosselin a ride. Those that wish to own the bed on which he returned the favor may soon be able to do so!

After her brother went public with her business, Deanna moved out of the home she shared with him. As a result, her furniture has been left behind and Jason has plans for one piece of it:

"I want to put the bed on eBay," he told The New York Post. "I want to see how much some crazy fan will pay."

Let's find out! How much would you pay for the bed in which Deanna reportedly did Jon?

Meanwhile, Kathie Lee Gifford has now chimed in on Jon & Kate Plus 8.

Jon & Kate Plus 8 is no longer a show about two people raising eight adorable children.

It's now a seedy, exploitive documentary about the tension between a married couple that just happens to have a bunch of kids running around, most of whom take away airtime from the latest feud TLC can highlight between the adults. It's pathetic and no one should be watching it.

Kate Chows Down

Of course, sadly, millions of people are. With that in mind, here's how the series milked the hatred between Jon and Kate Gosselin this week...

On last night's episode (taped months ago), Kate celebrated her 34th birthday... with just her children.

Where did the script call for Jon to be?

"I went out to Utah for, like, five days," he said. "I just wanted to get back out there and ride with my friends. It just happened to fall on Kate's birthday."

Did Jon Gosselin celebrate his wife's birthday by porking Deanna Hummel? That's the latest rumor.

According to Us Weekly, Jon actually spent the weekend with rumored girlfriend Deanna Hummel. Sources say the two were together at a Spring Gruv party at The Canyon in Utah on March 28, Kate's birthday.

Meanwhile, the Gosselin parents also recorded a handful of couch testimonials together this episode, actually appearing side-by-side a few times. (We're shocked TLC didn't create smoke emanating out of their ears.)

"This season, sometimes you'll see Kate and I interview separately. Sometimes you'll see us interview together on the chair," Jon said. "It depends how things are going. We have busy schedules. And that's it."

Man. We feel dirty just writing about this stuff.

We know this a crazy concept, but if Jon Gosselin and Kate Gosselin actually wanted to be left alone by the media, they'd stop talking to journalists.

Following a couple of photographs of himself and a pair of female acquaintances (over Memorial Day weekend and during a recent shopping trip at a New Jersey mall), the father of eight couldn't help but clarify his relationship with them.

"The two women with whom I've been photographed are family friends – Lauren Glassman and Lauren's daughter, Hailey," Jon said to People. "Lauren's husband, Dr. Larry Glassman, performed Kate's tummy tuck surgery, and since the surgery we've become friendly with the Glassmans."

Dude, who the heck cares?!?

This interaction between Jon and his friends barely registered a blip on the Gosselin radar, considering the pics were snapped during a week when divorce rumors sprung up and a child labor investigation got underway.

Of course, Jon had nothing to say about those reports.

Perhaps he's saving his nausea-inducing, publicity-garnering comments for tonight's episode of Jon & Kate Plus Eight on TLC. Please, people, send a message and do not watch it.

Oh, that poor, innocent Jon Gosselin.

The man that invited reality TV cameras into his home (and who married that nag of a wife) is a victim of an unfair media. So claims a totally unbiased source: Jon's mother, Pamela.

"I don't think he will ever be portrayed fairly," Pamela said to Star, after the tabloid shamelessly tracked her down at home. "It's always twisted... I don't think it's fair, and it never will be."

Over the past few weeks, of course, Jon has been accused of shagging Deanna Hummel, agreeing to a marriage contract that allows for cheating and possibly violating child labor laws in the state of Pennsylvania.

In fact, here's a look back at the last couple months in the lives of Jon and his annoying wife Kate. Click on each photo to enlarge it:

The marital woes of Jon and Kate Gosselin have gone from mere tabloid fodder to something much more serious.

Earlier today, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine whether or not Jon & Kate Plus 8 is violating child labor laws, following a series of complaints against the program.

Grating Kate

"We're not saying that they are not complying with child labor laws. We're investigating a complaint," Troy Thompson of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor said. "We're not saying that there was or was not a violation, just that we're conducting an investigation."

Earlier this week, Kate's brother and sister-in-law specifically called for such an investigation, as Kevin and Jodi Kreider wondered why there were no "laws protecting children in reality TV shows."

In a statement, TLC says:

“TLC fully complies with all applicable laws and regulations. ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8′ is no exception. For an extended period of time, we have been engaged in cooperative discussions and supplied all requested information to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor. We will continue to engage the appropriate officials and meet any standards or regulations that are applicable to TLC productions.”

A new episode of Jon & Kate Plus 8 airs this Monday. If you really have a problem with how Jon and Kate Gosselin treat their children, you won't watch.

The following is great news for Kate Gosselin. She'll soon be able to write a book titled Love Is in No Longer in the Mix: How to Recover from a Failed Marriage Via a Series of Book Signings.

According to The National Enquirer, the marriage between Kate and her husband is over. A divorce is imminent.

“Jon said their goal is to be legally separated by July 15 because Kate wants to move on quickly,” a source said. "Jon is going to push for half of their money, but Kate is determined to hang on to as much as she can - and they’re worth more than you think.”

How much more?

The couple allegedly earned between $50-75,000 per episode of their show, while Kate takes in approximately $20,000 per speaking engagement. Moreover, let's not forget the hordes of free items that TLC has handed out to the family.

“Needless to say, there’s a small fortune at stake here, easily $10 million,” said an insider “And Jon and Kate will be fighting over it like cats and dogs!”

Or, to be accurate: Jon will be sitting quietly, stewing over the cash; while Kate will continually nag him about being greedy and lazy.

There's a real life family feud brewing. But this one isn't over cash and prizes; it's over the mental health of eight innocent children.

On this morning's CBS Early Show, the brother and sister-in-law of Kate Gosselin said Jon & Kate Plus 8 has devolved from its original intent of simply documenting the kids' lives.

"We thought it was very innocent at the time," said Kate's sister-in-law, Jodi. "It quickly turned into more and more demands from Jon and Kate from the network. It turned into 40 episodes in a six-month span."

Jon, Kate, their kids and their extended family of cameramen celebrated the sextuplets' fifth birthday as one, giant, awkward group on this week's season premiere.

Moreover, Jodi and her husband Kevin say there are sometimes cameras in the children's bedrooms and the tykes are "being exploited... it's time for America to see the situation for what it really is."

Based on the ridiculous ratings for Monday night's season premiere, America is definitely tuning in at least.

"Unfortunately, there are no laws protecting children in reality TV shows," Jodi said. "These children are very aware of the cameras in their homes. The home is their workplace. This is not a healthy environment for kids to be raised in."

This is all your fault, people.

We really don't wanna keep writing about Jon Gosselin and Kate Gosselin, as these below-average parents seem more interested in attention than their children these days.

K. Goss

But there's clearly interest in this couple, as 9.8 million people tuned in for Monday night's fifth season premiere; that's twice as many viewers as the show's previous high, and more than the number that watched this year's Lost finale. Sheesh!

So, what's the latest on Kate, who complained on the episode that her life was "just so hard," due to the media and pressure on her marriage.

(To which The Baltimore Sun's David Zurawik aptly replied: "Is it really, Kate? Tell that to a family in which the breadwinner has just lost her or his job, you silly, self-absorbed fool.")

According to David Rothermel, Jon's former employer at Style Craft Corp, his wife had him on an allowance; a miniscule one, at that.

"She used to give him only $5 to spend, and if he was out and needed more money, she would give him hell," Rothermel told Us Weekly.

Rothermel - the latest in a long line of friends and relatives to either sell out the Gosselins or go along with their publicity-seeking strategy - also recounted a story in which Kate stormed into the office because Jon's father failed to bring her lunch; while also detailing Kate's lack of gratitude over the donation of a van for the family.

Isn't this fascinating stuff?!?

We beseech you, readers: stop watching this show. For the sake of Jon and Kate's children - as well as our sanity - it's best if this family is kept off TV for awhile.

Did you watch the fifth season premiere of Jon & Kate Plus a Few Possibly-Contrived-Infidelity-Rumors-Meant-to-Boost-Ratings 8 last night?

Those that did noticed that Jon and Kate Gosselin didn't appear on camera at the same time until 45 minutes into the episode.

Kate Gosselin's Hair

Once they finally shared a screen together, the pair pretty much laid into each other.

"Slowly, I've seen him almost resent the duties [of being a parent]," Kate said to viewers. "I know it's a lot to take care of eight kids. I'm traveling a lot, he's frustrated a lot. I think he's angry at me. He doesn't really feel great about me.

"Have I been hard on him for almost the last 10 years that we've been married? I would never deny that. I've always regretted it. Have I pushed him to this? I don't feel like I have. I feel like everyone is responsible for their own actions."

Note to couples: when a television crew captures your renewed wedding vows on camera, this is not the sign of a healthy marriage.

Meanwhile, Jon lamented that the series has "become a business" (which paid for their house and almost everything in it, he conveniently forgot to add), while giving his wife a guilt trip for always going on book tours.

In response to the episode, New Jersey's Star Ledger rightfully called out Kate for her hypocrisy over the paparazzi.

During a voiceover, the diluted, self-absorbed mother mother said she tells her kids to call the paparazzi "the P-people" because "I don't want them going to school being like, 'Well, the paparazzi is following us, like, that's so creepy.'"

Replied the Star Ledger: "What's creepy is having your children followed around by a camera crew. Any camera crew. Period. It's exploitation, whatever cutesy name you want to give it."

Do you think Jon and Kate will get divorced?
