At first, Rivers was placed in a medically induced coma and dependent upon life support.

Early today, we learned that Rivers is expected to emerge from her coma, but several years of rehab will likely mean the end of her comedy career, and could even prevent her making any more public appearances.

We received more mixed news just moments ago, as TMZ is reporting that Rivers has been moved from the ICU to a wing of the hospital devoted to recovery.

Unfortunately, that doesn't necessarily mean that her condition has improved.

When Joan Rivers stopped breathing during a surgical procedure last week, many feared the worst.

Remarkably, the 81-year-old comedy legend recovered, and fans breathed a sigh of relief when Rivers' condition was upgraded to stable.

Sadly, from there, things took a turn for the worse. Joan was placed in a medically-induced coma, and her daughter Melissa shared the news that her future remained uncertain.

Joan is expected to come out of her coma as early as today, but doctors say that at this point there's no telling what sort of brain damage she may have suffered and the rehab process will almost certainly mean the end of Rivers' nearly 60-year career in comedy.

There has been no change in the status of Joan Rivers over the past couple days.

Which is, sadly, not a good sign for the 81-year old comedian.

Rivers stopped breathing during throat surgery on Thursday and was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City for treatment.

She remained in serious condition there and was then placed on life support over the weekend, as machines are now responsible for the star's breathing and her family will be forced to make a critical decision some time this week.

They said on Saturday that they're hopeful Rivers will pull through once she is taken off life support.

In a new brief statement yesterday, meanwhile, daughter Melissa Rivers said she and her relatives are “keeping our fingers crossed” when it comes to her mother’s fate.
