The Fifty Shades of Grey movie has been debated, discussed and speculated about from day one, and the recent turmoil hasn't quelled fans' anticipation.

With actor Charlie Hunnam pulling out of the project almost as soon as he signed on, the million-dollar question once again is who will play Christian Grey.

Among the (fan) favorites? Ian Somerhalder of The Vampire Diaries fame!

While Dakota Johnson is still on board as Ana Steele, TVD fans would no doubt wonder what 50 Shades would be like with Ian and co-star Nina Dobrev.

The Fifty Shades of Grey trailer above imagines just that scenario.

It's still to be determined who will play Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie, but it's reportedly become clear who will not be cast:

Ian Somerhalder and Garrett Hedlund are both out of the running, according to insiders, along with Stephen Amell, narrowing the list of candidates.

Hedlund, 28, was reportedly approached about playing the S&M-obsessed lead in the film version of E.L. James' erotic novel, but turned it down.

"Doing a possible trilogy was too big a commitment, and producers wouldn't let him do just one film," says the source of Kirsten Dunst's boyfriend.

Ian Somerhalder, 34, is out too - though he openly coveted the part.

Ian Somerhalder has whipped his own fan base into a frenzy by lobbying for the role of Christian in the coming film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. Ian Somerhalder Sunglasses

Having created a monster, he's now seeking to calm the masses.

The Vampire Diaries hunk took to his Twitter to refute reports that he is "desperate" to portray Christian Grey, and to quell critics of his potential casting.

Ian Somerhalder Tweeting

Somerhalder, 33, has been frequently talked about as a possible Christian not only due to his physical appearance, but his sexy, approachable demeanor.

Last week, he seemed to be full-on pushing for the Fifty Shades of Grey part, Tweeting at writer Bret Easton Ellis that he'd love Ellis to write the script for him.

He's taking a step back now, however, saying he's not desperate, probably won't get asked to audition anyway, and urging fans to relax either way.

Other potentially Christian Greys talked about in fan circles include Matt Bomer, Alex Pettyfer, Ryan Phillippe and of course Robert Pattinson.

Lucy Hale recently lobbied for Ian ... to star alongside herself.

Ian Somerhalder is not only interested in the role of Christian in Fifty Shades of Grey, he's progressed to lobbying for it ... and recruiting writers.

The Vampire Diaries star, 33, has made it clear that he's more than game to turn the controversial novel into an even more controversial movie.

Now he's waging a Twitter campaign of sorts, beginning with reaching out to Bret Easton Ellis, a screenwriter who apparently wants in on the film as well.

"Id so love to be Christian Grey w/you & Angelina Jolie. Ive only waited 10 years to do a movie w/u. Im grown up now-no worries," Ian wrote.

Ellis (American Psycho, The Rules of Attraction) has also been angling to bring the S&M saga of Mr. Grey and Anastasia Steele to the big screen.

He wrote to Ian: "I'm glad you're as excited by the prospect of Fifty Shades of Grey as I am. (though I've heard that Angelina is not involved...)"

Yes, despite rumors that Angelina Jolie will direct, that's not happening.

Still, Bret and Ian? A formidable pair no doubt. Ellis previously named Alex Pettyfer as his Mr. Grey of choice, but says he might reconsider:

"Rereading Fifty Shades of Grey: it's hard for me to think of Ian Somerhalder as Christian G. because I've known him personally for so long."

"I know Ian Somerhalder and how kinky he can be and yes, he's probably Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey, and he will go all-out for it."

"I'll call Ian tomorrow for Fifty Shades of Grey ...I get it, I get it."

We're glad you get it Bret … now do it.

Nina Dobrev hasn't read Fifty Shades of Grey yet, but with her name floating around as a possible fit for the female lead, she might want to get on it!

"All I've heard is that it's very scandalous, to say the least," the Vampire Diaries starlet told MTV. "I haven't read it, but I'm intrigued ... who knows?"

"I mean, well, I guess we'll have to see."

Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder

With co-star and real-life boyfriend Ian Somerhalder expressing interest in the role of Christian Grey, it's no surprise Dobrev has been linked to Anastasia Steele.

Working with Ian a second time isn't as appealing to Nina as you night think, though. She said if she did play Anastasia, she'd prefer another guy.

"I don't know if that's a good idea," she said of herself and Somerhalder both starring in the movie adaptation of EL James' erotic love story trilogy.

"I think it's best for any of the actors on The Vampire Diaries to kind of do their own things ... and create new characters ... if it's the same people, the fans will alway see me as Elena and they'll see him as Damon if we do a film together."

Will Ian Somerhalder star in the wildly-anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey movie? That question was posed to The Vampire Diaries star during his Chelsea Lately appearance on Wednesday.

And the talented actor certainly sounds up for it, acknowledging the possibility and joking that - based on his 175-year old blood sucker falling for an 18-year old on this CW hit - he's clearly into younger women.

Other topics broached in the video below: Somerhalder accent, filming his show at night and, of course, Chelsea Handler's overt, unfunny attempts to make EVERYthing about sex. Watch now:

Meanwhile, did you catch last night's Vampire Diaries season finale? If so, please remember to breathe again now. Holy everything.

Ian Somerhalder is one of several stars talked about as a potentially great fit for Christian Grey in the upcoming film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.

He's leading THG's poll on the subject (below), as a matter of fact.

Asked about it on Ryan Seacrest's radio show Monday, The Vampire Diaries heart throb admitted he's heard the speculation about his casting, and approves.

Asked if he's interested in starring in the film, Ian said: “Potentially. I absolutely would be up for that. I have the book and I just started reading it."

"That would be a pretty incredible thing, and hopefully that could pan out. Yes, beyond the shadow of a doubt I think that would be a phenomenal opportunity!”

The best-selling book's protagonist, Anastasia Steele, and her troubled, controlling man, 27-year-old millionaire Christian Grey, will surely be sought-after roles.

What do you think? Should Ian play Christian?
