She tried her best. But despite the efforts and beauty of Elisabetta Canalis, it's looking more and more likely that no woman will permanently hold down George Clooney.

After two years of dating, the actor and the model announced their split today.

George Clooney with Elisabetta Canalis

"We are not together anymore. It's very difficult and very personal, and we hope everyone can respect our privacy," Clooney and Canalis said in a joint statement.

The news isn't unexpected, and should be exciting for both men and women around the world. The latter will line up to try and tame the handsome bachelor, while some lucky guy will have a chance to hit this body.

Has George Clooney found his next Oscar vehicle?

The official trailer for The Descendants has hit the Internet. In the drama, which comes out this fall, Clooney portrays a father who must care for his daughters after his wife is critically injured. Things get even more complicated when he discovers a secret about his family.

George Clooney recently came down with malaria.

It's the second bout of the disease for the actor, who will appear on Piers Morgan Tonight Friday and who recently returned from Sudan, where he's been calling for diplomacy against that nation's potential genocide.

Gorgeous George

Clooney is using the opportunity to point out the significant differences between how fortunate we have it in the United States compared to third world countries struggling for survival. As he recovers, the star said in a statement:

“This illustrates how with proper medication, the most lethal condition in Africa, can be reduced to bad ten days instead of a death sentence."

Simply put, as previously stated, George Clooney is awesome.

The actor, who jut returned from the Sudan, appeared on The Today Show this morning; not to promote a movie, but to promote aggressive diplomatic action in the region, as it faces a potential civil war and impending genocide.

"If we get involved now, we have a shot [at stopping it]," Clooney said. "The Secretary of State said it's a ticking time bomb. The CIA said this is the next genocide if we're not careful."

Emphasizing that all experts acknowledge "this is what is going to take place if someone doesn't moderate and mediate," the Oscar winner says he's "just trying to say it as loud as possible."

On more than one occasion, we've cited the awesomeness of Angelina Jolie, due to her humanitarian efforts around the world.

But George Clooney reminded us this week that Angelina isn't the only gorgeous, talented star that uses her fame, money and influence for good.

A Clooney Close Up

The Oscar winner arrived in Southern Sudan a couple days ago in anticipation of a vote for the country's independence and, unfortunately, a possible civil war. "If you knew a tsunami, or Katrina or a Haiti earthquake was coming, what would you do to save people?" Clooney asked.

Journalist Ann Curry is accompanying Clooney through a region west of Darfur, a place rarely seen by foreigners.

While Elisabetta Canalis is at the center of a cocaine and prostitution scandal, the gorgeous Italian model often finds herself answering questions about nothing but her year-long relationship with George Clooney.

Simply put, "there are some people who just don't want to see me happy," Canalis says in the new Italian Vanity Fair.

On the Red Carpet

Such criticism causes the aspiring actress - she recurs on TNT's Leverage as a character referred to as "The Italian Woman" - to feel insecure at times, but Clooney never fails to make his feelings clear.

"If you are loved then you always feel great," she said. "[George] reassures me all the time. He is very close. I feel more embraced than ever before."

Adding that Clooney has "given color back to my life," Canalis said she doesn't understand why so many seem so jealous of her relationship. (THG note: We know why. Just take a look at your boyfriend, Elisabetta.)

''I know some women, very high profile women, who have taken his picture off their computer desktop," she says. "Maybe I should not get so stressed over it. At the end though the best way to confront this envy is to be happy, but it's just that they won't forgive."

George Clooney already has an Oscar under his handsome belt.

But we have a feeling the Emmy Award he's been assured of will mean more.

George Clooney and Stacy Keibler

Earlier today, The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced it will present the charitable actor with its Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at this year's ceremony on August 29.

Citing Clooney's efforts as the head of Hope for Haiti, as well as his fundraising for victims of Hurricane Katrina and his involvement with Darfur, John Shaffner - chairman and chief executive of the TV academy -  said this was "an obvious choice."

We agree.

As for the list of actual 2010 Emmy Award nominations, you can check that out NOW.

It's the age-old question: What do you get a man that has everything?

Perfect case in point: George Clooney.

The actor is immensely popular, cool and rich. He's dating a gorgeous model named Elisabetta Canalis. She's very pretty and has been dating Clooney since July 2009.

So, what can we do for the star, who turns 49 today?

Simply wish him happiness and good health. We can also ask readers to submit their best wishes, along with thoughts on what you'd do to Clooney if ever alone in a room with him. Just try to keep them safe for work...

George Clooney was shut out at the Academy Awards last night, as he lost to Jeff Bridges for Best Actor and Up in the Air was defeated by The Hurt Locker in the Best Picture category.

But it's been an even worse run lately for Saddam Hussein. The former dictator of Iraq was ousted from power in April 2003 and killed by his former country in December 2006.

Still, somehow, Saddam showed up at the Oscars and... sorry. We're being told the gentleman posing alongside Clooney below is actually actor Antonio Banderas, not Saddam Hussein.

Our mistake.
