The first photos of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, taken about five months after she was tragically shot in the head, have emerged on Facebook.

The images depict a a woman in recovery, smiling and with short, dark hair. They were taken by a professional photographer on May 17 at TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital, a day before Giffords under a cranioplasty.

The picture above was not altered or edited, according to her staff, who said it shows "Gabby has traveled a remarkable distance since Jan. 8."

“This was Mark and Gabby’s decision,” said spokesman CJ Karamargin of the pictures' release. “There is intense interest in the Congresswoman’s appearance and on the threshold of her going to outpatient treatment, we thought this was a good way to satisfy public curiosity.”

Giffords is expected to leave the hospital this month.

The man accused of opening fire on her and her constituents in Arizona has been deemed mentally incompetent.

"It's very good news," spokesman C.J. Karamargin tells CNN, adding that Giffords asked for a piece of toast this week.

Why that facility?

"The reason for choosing this rehab facility is because of their track record," Karamargin said. "They are doing a fabulous job and working with her language and speech exercise and the physical therapy part of it."

For the second time since he allegedly shot 19 people, killing six, Jared Lee Loughner appeared inside a courtroom today. He pleaded not guilty to charges that he tried to kill Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and two of her aides.

At the moment, the 22-year old faces federal charges of trying to assassinate Giffords and this pair of government officials. He will later face state charges that center on the other victims.

Loughner entered a Phoenix courthouse wearing an orange jumpsuit and glasses. His hair has grown out slightly since his sinister mug shot was snapped two weeks ago.

During the hearing, U.S. District Judge Larry Burns asked Loughner's attorney, Judy Clarke - who has represented such clients as Ted Kaczynski and Olympic bomber Eric Rudolphwhether - if there was any question about her client's ability to understand the case against him.

"We are not raising any issues at this time," Clarke said.

The status of Gabrielle Giffords continues to improve.

In the latest encouraging news about the Arizona Congresswoman, doctors plan on moving her to a rehab center in Houston in the very near future. This follows yesterday's significant step, as doctors took Giffords outside for the first time since the January 8 shooting.

"I saw the biggest smile she could gather," trauma surgeon Peter Rhee said of the politician's reaction to the hospital's roof deck. "We are very happy to have her enjoying the sunshine of Arizona."

Among recent improvements made by Giffords:

  • She successfully used an iPad.
  • She picked out different colored objects.
  • She moved her lips, although it's still unclear whether or not she can form words.

Mark Kelly, Gabrielle's astronaut of a husband, thinks his wife is familiar with her surroundings. At yesterday's briefing, he said: "I can just look in her eyes and tell. She is very aware of the situation."

With a nation rallying behind her, Gabrielle Giffords is recovering at a rapid, awe-inducing pace from the tragic events of last weekend.

The Congresswoman is already sitting up and communicating with her hands, facts that have stunned doctors at Tucson's University Medical Center.

"She is able to move both of her legs on command," says neurosurgeon Michael Lemole. "That's huge. We say, 'Gabrielle, lift your legs up,' and she lifts both of them up."

As detailed Tuesday night by President Barack Obama, Giffords opened her eyes for the first time since the shooting soon after he paid her a hospital visit.

"That implies that the part of the brain that lets us awake from sleeping, the arousal center, is functioning," says Lemole. "Miracles happen every day. A lot of medicine is outside of our control, so we're wise to acknowledge miracles."

The surgeon concluded that the goal is to get Giffords sitting in a chair by the end of this weekend.

President Barack Obama did his best to comfort Tucson, Arizona and the nation as a whole last night at a eulogy for the victims of last week's tragedy.

Urging Americans to forward on "in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds," his speech evoked memories of the six killed and many wounded.

Among those wounded was U.S. Rep. Gabrille Giffords, whose supermarket meet-and-greet instead became the site of this unspeakable tragedy.

Obama condemned our nation's increasingly harsh public dialogue, or "politics, point-scoring and pettiness that drifts away with the next news cycle."

"Rather than pointing fingers or assigning blame, let us use this occasion to expand our moral imaginations, to listen to each other more carefully," he told 14,000 people at the University of Arizona's McKale Memorial Center in Tucson.

Instead, he called upon us "to sharpen our instincts for empathy, and remind ourselves of all the ways our hopes and dreams are bound together."

In a new video, Sarah Palin has decried the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords, along with the finger-pointing she believes has made her a scapegoat of sorts.

Slamming critics who say she bears blame, she says "We must reject the idea that [when] a law is broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker."

Check out her full video response here and comment below:

Sarah drew criticism after it was discovered that Rep. Giffords was targeted in Palin's crosshairs map of GOP takeover opportunities released last fall.

Palin says media figures "manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible."

Pointing fingers at finger-pointing, the former Governor adds: "We are better than the mindless finger pointing we endured in the wake of the tragedy."

What do you think? Is Sarah Palin partly to blame?

With their son in federal custody and a memorial service for the six victims he's accused of shooting scheduled for Wednesday, the parents of Jared Loughner have broken their silence.

"There are no words that can possibly express how we feel," they wrote in a statement handed to reporters stationed outside their home. "We wish that there were, so we could make you feel better. We don't understand why this happened.

"We care very deeply about the victims and their families. We are so very sorry for their loss."

There is good news, fortunately: Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has started to breathe without assistance.

"I'm happy to say she's holding her own," says Dr. Michael Lemole Jr., chief of neurosurgery at University Medical Center. "Her status is the same as it was yesterday. She's still following simple commands."

Incredibly, and depressingly, it's possible that Jared Lee Loughner is not the most twisted individual associated with the deaths of six people in Arizona over the weekend.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church - an organization that has protested Adam Lambert and Justin Bieber in the past, while picketing Elizbaeth Edwards' funeral last month - plan to cause a scene at the funerals of those killed in Loughner's January 8 shooting spree.

As evidenced by their sign below, these creatons believe the deaths are punishment from God because the nation has taken action against the church. It's truly despicable stuff.

Westboro Baptist Church Message

* UPDATE:Arizona legislators have approved legislation that makes it illegal to protest at or near funeral sites.

With his arsenal of YouTube videos, Jared Lee Loughner has already given us a frightening look into his psyche.

Now, the public has received another look at the 22-year old accused of opening fire in an Arizona supermarket parking lot on Saturday, severely wounding Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and killing six onlookers.

It's his mug shot, and it's equally disturbing.

Jared Lee Loughner Mug Shot

Loughner, who appeared briefly before a judge today, faces five federal charges: one count of attempted assassination of a member of Congress, two counts of killing an employee of the United States and two counts of intent to kill employees of the United States.

He's next due in court on January 24.
