A waitress who picked up the tab for two National Guard soldiers affected by the government shutdown was paid back by Ellen DeGeneres - and then some.

Sarah Hoidahl of Concord, N.H., said she just wanted to do a nice thing for the soldiers she was waiting on, so she recently picked up their lunch tab of $27.75.

On Friday, after the story went viral, Ellen interviewed Hoidahl and paid her $27.75 in cash. Then she threw in a check for $10,000 and a 50-inch television.

An emotional Hoidahl buried her face in her hands and thanked Ellen, who replied multiple times, "You're a good person." And right she is. Watch it unfold:

DeGeneres heard of Hoidahl's gesture when the New Hampshire National Guard posted a picture on its Facebook page and the story spread quickly online.

The government shutdown ended after more than two weeks with the passage of a temporary budget agreement, but tensions could resurface in early 2014.

In the meantime, it's nice to hear at least one good thing came out of it.

Consider the air cleared.

Following a report that alleged Bethenny Frankel is irate at Ellen DeGeneres over her show's poor ratings and weak guest bookings, the talk show hosts set the record straight today when the latter appeared on the former's program via satellite.

Ellen on Bethenny

"A lot of people like to make a lot of comments in the press about different relationships... and I try to explain to people that you and I are really friends," Bethenny told Ellen. "We actually go to dinner... I've been to your house. I genuinely love you and look up to you and I call you when things are rough or when I need advice."

The last time Miley Cyrus appeared on Ellen, the host threw her a bachelorette party.

So when the singer stopped by to tape an interview with this comedian yesterday, following her split with Liam Hemsworth, Ellen had one simple request: Give me my money back!

She was just kidding, but Cyrus did address the end of her engagement to the actor for the first time in public.

“I think people spend more time actually thinking about it then I really do," Miley said. "I just believe when a chapter is done you have to close it and start that new one. That’s kind of where I am right now. I felt like I have so much to be thankful for at this time that my energy hasn’t really been focused on that."

Leah Remini opened up about her split from Scientology on the season premiere of Ellen, saying she's "OK" since leaving the controversial faith this summer.

Not that her break from the church was without consequence.

"We lost friends who can no longer talk to us who are still in the organization," Leah Remini said, noting that current members can't talk to ex-members.

"But we have other friends, who are not in the church, who have stood by us and that's all we can ask for," Remini added, and Ellen said she's one of them.

Asked why she left, Remini's answer was similar to but less revealing than past explanations she's given, saying her mom got her into it when she was young.

Perhaps in response to the huge success the Golden Globes found in their two funny lady hosts, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, last year, the Oscars have pegged Ellen DeGeneres to host this year's festivities.

Ellen took to twitter this morning to make the announcement...

"It's official: I'm hosting the #Oscars! I'd like to thank @TheAcademy, my wife Portia, and, oh dear, there goes the orchestra."

The Ellen nod was one of the first actions taken by new Academy President, Cheryl Boone Issacs. We can hope this is just the first of many good decisions on her part!

With his friend and protege struggling through accusations of pot smoking and reckless driving, Usher taped an interview with Ellen DeGeneres this week.

And the R&B star continued to come back to the same reasons for Bieber's recent fall from grace: his age and the age in which he lives.

"There is no privacy," Usher said of the social media era, adding that he hopes Bieber continues to "mature" and grow," but it's a challenge when "that kind of trial and elimination period is kind of done in front of a camera."

Ellen DeGeneres is the latest celebrity to take Abercrombie & Fitch to task over its CEO's controversial and exclusionary marketing strategy.

The TV host discussed the topic in her monologue, slated to air on May 20.

"The [A&F] CEO announced that his stores will stop selling clothing for women larger than size 10," she said. "You know what I say to that? Oh, Fitch, please!"

"Beauty isn't between a size 0 and a size 8," said Ellen, echoing Kirstie Alley's criticism earlier this week. "It's not a number at all. It's not physical."

"I know a lot of kids watch this show, so I want to say one more thing to you all. What you look like on the outside is not what makes you cool."
