When Cate Edwards learned that her father, former presidential candidate John Edwards, was cheating on her mother, Elizabeth, she was crushed.

The 31-year-old daughter of the disgraced former U.S. senator adds that he personally admitted to her that he had had an affair with Rielle Hunter.

“I guess he and my mom decided that that was how it needed to be done. So yeah, I was devastated. And I was very disappointed," Edwards said.

"I mean, these are my parents. I had grown up with a lot of love in my family. And it was hard to see them go through this,” Cate said in an interview on Today.

Asked if she was mad, Cate Edwards said, “Yeah, of course.”

Rielle Hunter's new tell-all What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter, and Me contains many seedy revelations, but this one may take the cake.

Elizabeth Edwards kept a photo of John Edwards and Rielle as her screensaver to not-so-subtly torment her cheating husband, Hunter claims in her book.

In a book excerpt printed in People, Hunter, who bashes Elizabeth Edwards repeatedly, described how the cancer-stricken wife first reacted to their affair:

  • Elizabeth Edwards Pic
  • Smilin' John
  • A Rielle Pic

"Elizabeth requested all the tapes (I’d made of the campaign, as a videographer). On one tape she saw Johnny walking into a room and his reaction to seeing me."

"She apparently told him that he never once looked at her the way he looked at me. So she took that bit and put it on her computer as a screen saver."

"The poor woman thought she was tormenting her cheating husband, using the image as a painful reminder of his foolish, political career-killing indiscretion."

"But in an attempt to punish John, Elizabeth was ultimately just tormenting herself."

If one can be tormented in the afterlife by events here on Earth, she likely is by Hunter and her book. Especially this excerpt near the end:

“I’m still in love with John. That didn’t go away, shockingly enough. Marriage? I have no idea. I’m not a big fan of the institution, but never say never.”

Except that Rielle Hunter and John Edwards just broke up. Oh well.

Rielle Hunter was John Edwards' mistress, but not his only one, according to her new book, What Really Happened. Yes, Rielle Hunter has a book out.

In the book, to be released June 26, Hunter reveals that John Edwards, the disgraced former White House hopeful, carried on at least two other affairs.

Rielle Hunter says she wrote it "in an effort to explain her relationship with Edwards to their daughter." We're sure money had nothing to do with it.

Ironically, when Edwards first met Hunter in 2006 he lied to her about having more mistresses than he actually had, and only revealed the truth years later.

After he was set to be tried for using donations from wealthy political backers to cover up his illicit affair and the daughter he had with Hunter, he came clean.

Edwards was found not guilty this spring on one count of violating campaign finance rules and a federal judge declared a mistrial on five other criminal counts.

The Justice Department will not retry the case, leaving him in the clear ... legally. His reputation, astonishingly, continues to take on more and more damage.

Hunter is vague about their current relationship status, but suggests that they remain romantically involved and he is involved in daughter Frances Quinn's life.

Former presidential hopeful John Edwards was more "a spectator than a participant" at a 2007 meeting in which his now-deceased wife, Elizabeth, railed at two political donors because they had maintained ties to his mistress, Rielle Hunter.

Jennifer Palmieri, a former aide to Edwards who is now the White House deputy director of communications under Barack Obama, said Elizabeth Edwards was angry at Fred Baron and his wife Lisa for taking Hunter on a shopping spree.

"Rielle Hunter was a loose cannon and Fred and Lisa thought it was important to keep the relationship going," Palmieri said, in describing the 2007 meeting at a hotel in Davenport, Iowa, at which she was present.

"Elizabeth just wanted Rielle out of their lives entirely," she said.

John Edwards, 58, is accused of violating federal election laws by soliciting more than $900,000 in illegal campaign contributions, mainly from Baron and heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, as he pursued the presidency in 2008.

The federal government contends that he sought money to conceal the affair, knowing revelations that he was cheating on his cancer-stricken wife and had fathered Hunter's child would destroy his campaign.

Cate Edwards, the daughter of John Edwards, had to leave his trial on federal campaign violation charges yesterday after some upsetting revelations.

She walked out of the courtroom, crying, as a witness started to describe an argument between her parents after a tabloid reported her dad's affair.

The former U.S. Senator faces charges of illegally using campaign contributions to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter while running for president.

Former Edwards aide Christina Reynolds testified about the day in 2007 when John and Elizabeth Edwards learned of the National Enquirer's report.

They were at the airport, and "Elizabeth was very upset... She was very vocal," Reynolds said. "She stormed off and collapsed into a ball in the parking lot."

After aides helped Elizabeth Edwards get back to her feet and led her to a nearby restroom, "She seemed a little calmer," said Reynolds, "then stormed out of the bathroom and tried to engage Mr. Edwards."

In an emotional outburst, Elizabeth reportedly told her husband, "You don't see me any more," and tore off her shirt and bra on the spot.

John Edwards "didn't have much of a reaction."
