As friends and family mourning the death of Elizabeth Edwards, one celebrity news site waited a whole 12 hours before working the Rielle Hunter angle.

The infamous mistress of John Edwards hopes she and the former Democratic presidential candidate can get married now, according to Radar Online.

A source close to Rielle Hunter says she "has been very patient" and "believes that John is her soul mate, and thinks they are going to get married."

Rielle Hunter in her bizarre GQ photo spread earlier this year.

To those who applauded her courage in dealing with John, who cheated on her and knocked up Rielle while Elizabeth battled cancer, this won't go over well.

At the time of Elizabeth Edwards' death, she was estranged from John. Radar's source revealed that Hunter has been closely watching Elizabeth's situation.

"She doesn't care about anyone but herself. She's been selfish and horrible this whole time, no matter what else has been said about her," the source said.

THG NOTE: That's pretty much all we've said about her.

Political leaders and Hollywood celebrities alike are paying tribute after the death of Elizabeth Edwards, who lost a six-year battle with cancer Tuesday.

The lawyer, author and mother of three was just 61.

Having separated from John Edwards after three decades of marriage and following his affair with Rielle Hunter, her passing is even more poignant.

Elizabeth Edwards (1949-2010).

The President of the United States, Barack Obama, said the following: "Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Elizabeth Edwards. This afternoon I spoke to Cate Edwards and John Edwards, and offered our family's condolences."

"I came to know and admire Elizabeth over the course of the presidential campaign. She was a tenacious advocate for fixing our health care system and fighting poverty, and our country has benefited from the voice she gave to the cause of building a society that lifts up all those left behind."

Elizabeth Edwards, a lawyer, best-selling author, mother of three and the wife of two-time presidential candidate John Edwards, died peacefully in her home.

She was 61. Just days after doctors advised her to suspend her cancer treatment, Elizabeth tragically succumbed after battling the disease for over six years.

Elizabeth Edwards was surrounded by friends and family in her last days, including John himself. She and John were estranged following the Rielle Hunter scandal.

R.I.P. Elizabeth Edwards (1949-2010).

Monday, Elizabeth posted what read like a farewell message on her Facebook page reading, "The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that."

"And yes, there are certainly times when we aren't able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being human,"she added.

"But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that, I am grateful."

Elizabeth Edwards' cancer fight has taken a turn for the worse.

With the disease spreading to her liver, the wife of John Edwards revealed that she is resting at home and no longer seeking treatment for the disease.

"Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive," the Edwards family says in a statement.

On Monday, the ailing Edwards posted a Facebook message to her friends that can be tragically interpreted as a farewell of sorts. She writes:

"I have been sustained by three saving graces – my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined."

"The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that."

Having been through some of the worst possible events in her marriage, Elizabeth Edwards feels a connection to a fellow scorned wife, Sandra Bullock.

"I'm not just a cuckolded wife," John Edwards' ex tells Matt Lauer. "I think about Sandra Bullock - who I don't know - what an incredible year she had."

"She won an Academy Award for an incredible performance, and more than that, took that story and integrated it into her own life in a healthy happy way."

The Blind Side star secretly adopted baby son Louis back in January, before learning that Jesse James cheated on her and filing to divorce her husband.

Which is part of Elizabeth's problem - you hear more about the latter.

"The stories you hear are not about all those great successes, but about the failure of her marriage," Edwards continues. "That's not who she is... I assume she wants to reclaim who she is in the same way I want to reclaim who I am."

BLIND SIDED: Elizabeth feels a connection with Sandra.

Elizabeth and John Edwards legally separated in January after he basically savaged their lives; the former North Carolina senator had recently admitted that he had fathered a baby girl, Quinn, with weird videographer mistress Rielle Hunter.

Having seen Rielle Hunter sit-down for an interview on Oprah, Elizabeth tells Lauer: "I still think this person is so completely unlike me that it's hard to imagine the same person could marry me and be attracted to that woman, as well."

Of John, whom she will likely divorce next year, she says, "I think I did marry a marvelous man. He changed over time. He's no longer the person I married."

"I still admire an enormous number of things about him."

"John's conduct through this whole thing was terrible and it makes people want him to pay for it," Elizabeth says. "On a personal level, he's paid a lot."

Fighting metastatic, stage-four breast cancer, with tumors spreading to her legs, spine and skull, she says she can't think about her younger kids (Emma, 12, and Jack, 10) growing up without a mom. "I don't let my head go that place," she says.

John Edwards and his daughter Cate used to be tight.

Then, the disgraced politician became one of the worst people alive, cheating on his cancer-stricken wife, knocking up his mistress, paying an aide to take responsibility for the child. That sort of thing.

Now, in her first comments since her father's secret life became exposed, Cate is siding - strongly - with her mother, Elizabeth. She told People:

"There are the things she taught without words, [such as] how to continue to live your life on your own terms when it somehow becomes savaged by people you never invited into it."

(Pssst, Rielle Hunter: We think she's talking about you.)

Elizabeth Edwards also speaks on in next week's issue of the magazine, saying she's hard at work on a paperback edition of her memoir, Resilience.

It will include a new chapter reflecting on the most damaging aspects of the fallout from her husband's infidelity. Says Mrs. Edwards: "It’s my story and I’m writing it from here on out – nobody else."

She developed terminal cancer. Her husband used that to garner sympathy while running for U.S. president, all while cheating on her with Rielle Hunter.

He then knocked Rielle up, lied about it many times, and may have even used political campaign funds to perpetuate a cover-up. Yet she stood by him.

His former aide came across a John Edwards sex tape. Rielle posed like a total hoe in GQ magazine and basically said that the affair was all his wife's fault.

How long until Elizabeth Edwards takes this b!tch out?!

The Rielle Hunter GQ pictures had to be the last straw. She ripped Elizabeth and says she and John Edwards were in love. Will this private hell even end?

People magazine asks how much more Elizabeth can take, but read between the lines. What they're really asking is: What's she going to do about it?

We think that the best defense is a good offense.

We're not suggesting Elizabeth actually kill Rielle Hunter, or insinuating it's even crossed her mind, but come on. She's got to get revenge somehow, some way.

What better way to finish this soap opera, right? She can divorce John and take all his money, but that skank Rielle? She deserves something far, far worse.

Okay, maybe not actual, physical violence. But at least having the fancy house she lives in (and John Edwards paid for) toilet papered to high heaven.

Andrew Young, the country's most famous campaign aide turned fall guy turned whistle blower turned absurd sex tape owner, is feeling the heat these days.

Young turned over the John Edwards sex tape to a judge, as ordered, but still faces questions about where the tapes were kept and what he did with them.

A Rielle Hunter Picture

The former Edwards confidant struggled to answer why he said last week that the only copies of the sex tape he had access to were in an Atlanta lockbox.

He testified earlier this week that he also had a copy of the tape elsewhere and he recently showed the video to ABC News in preparation for an interview.

On top of potential legal action from Edwards' mistress Rielle Hunter, whose affair with the presidential candidate Young helped hide, Edwards is pissed too.

So is his wife. Elizabeth Edwards has threatened to sue him for contributing to the downfall of their marriage, according to a report in the Washington Post.

John Edwards whistle-blower Andrew Young with wife Cheri.

Young's attorneys turned over several items, including a tape marked "special" that purportedly shows John Edwards in a sexual encounter with Rielle Hunter.

Young personally turned over a copy of the sex tape as well. But questions over whether there are more copies - and whether he tried to sell them - linger.

"This is all disturbing to me, and it's not a comfort to our client," said Alan Duncan, an attorney for Rielle Hunter, who has said Young invaded her privacy.

Conceding he had made some errors in previous sworn statements, Young maintains he has tried his best to detail the location of items Hunter is seeking.

"I answered as honestly as I could," he testified.

He said Elizabeth Edwards threatened a lawsuit against him under the North Carolina statute that allows one to sue a third party for contributing to a marriage ending. A jilted spouse typically uses this to seek money from their partner's lover.

"We have powerful people coming at us," said Young, who vowed to fight to prove he is not a liar (even if he is a proven liar). "Are we scared? Absolutely."

A spokeswoman for Elizabeth Edwards declined to comment.

We know John Edwards has no morals, but never took him for a petty thief.

While this latest piece of news is nowhere near as scandalous as the John Edwards sex tape, it is but another strange piece of the fallen politician's bizarre saga.

The Orange County, N.C., sheriff's office just released last week a copy of a report alleging a "domestic between spouses and larceny of wallet" in October 2008.

The location of the alleged theft? The home of John and Elizabeth Edwards.

In the report, Elizabeth describes how John came home to eat dinner with his children after a sports event. Elizabeth told him he had no business being there.

Moments later, John Edwards challenged his wife and said the house was his, too. Then Elizabeth Edwards said she saw her husband take her wallet and leave.

Elizabeth Edwards and John Edwards

The train wreck that is John Edwards seems to worsen daily.

Elizabeth said her wallet contained $320, credit cards and a phone. John went down to "the barn," an adjoining structure that includes a full-size basketball court, for several minutes before beginning to leave, according to officials.

"As Mr. Edwards was preparing to leave, he was asked to give the wallet back,” the official police report notes, “and he advised that he did not have it."

The report ends by giving Edwards – a former U.S. Senator, two-time presidential candidate and Democratic V.P. nominee – a new title: "suspect."

The report had been kept confidential at Elizabeth's request, as the documents’ release "could endanger the victims physical or mental well-being."

So ... John Edwards was not allowed in his own home, and rebelled after being kicked out by ganking his own wife's wallet? Eh, we can see that.

After all, this is a guy who knocked up Rielle Hunter while running for President of the U.S., and after Elizabeth got cancer. Nothing is off limits.

Two-time presidential candidate John Edwards has confirmed that he and wife Elizabeth Edwards are separated, but that he still cares deeply about her.

"It is an extraordinarily sad moment, but I love my children more than anything and still care deeply about Elizabeth," Edwards said in a statement.

A friend of Elizabeth Edwards also confirmed Wednesday that the couple is separated. Elizabeth's sister, Nancy Anania, said that she remains strong.

"She said, 'I've had it. I can't do this. I want my life back,'" Anania said. "I'm really proud of her. Somehow, she's doing as well as you could expect."

The statements from John and Elizabeth Edwards come ...

  • As a former Edwards aide, Andrew Young, is preparing to release a tell-all book, The Politician, that gives an unflattering portrait of him.
  • One week after John Edwards finally made a public declaration that he fathered a child, now almost two, with his mistress Rielle Hunter.
  • As Elizabeth continues her battle with incurable cancer, which she has had since early 2007, about when John was knocking up Rielle.
  • As a federal investigation into his campaign finances, from which he is accused of funneling Hunter hush money, is ramping up.

Yup, it's pretty hard to see how you'd come back from that.

Young initially claimed that he fathered the child with John Edwards' mistress in the weeks leading up to the crucial presidential primaries in 2008.

John Edwards publicly declared only last week that he is the father of the child with Rielle Hunter, who worked as a videographer for his campaign.

Young says Edwards tried to hide the affair, begging his "crazy slut" mistress to get an abortion and then wanting to have a fake DNA test done.
