Grammy-winner Bruno Mars, last season's finalist Crystal Bowersox and the departing Casey Abrams all performed live on American Idol on Thursday night.

While Casey's elimination was another surprise in a season packed with unexpected American Idol results, he enjoyed a nice run and proved worthy of a save.

Unfortunately, the judges couldn't bail him out a second time last night.

Watch Casey go out in style with his jazzy swan song, "I Put a Spell on You," followed by the performances of Bruno and Crystal below ...

Barring a collective, nationwide brain fart, Crystal Bowersox will be crowned American Idol champion next month.

But the season nine favorite came close to walking away from the competition a few weeks ago, as the pressure reportedly got to her and Crystal has to be convinced to stay by Ryan Seacrest.

While Bowersox has confirmed via Facebook that she had a "moment of doubt," she was asked by TV Guide Magazine this week if she was 100% committed to the show? Her response: “Of course. Or I wouldn’t be here.”

Final Six

Who should win season six of American Idol?

As for her Tuesday night rendition of "People Get Ready," a widely praised performance that brought the singer to tears, Crystal reiterated that a certain audience member caused her to break down:

“I love my dad. He’d go through hell and high water for me. He was wearing sunglasses [and] I knew he was trying to hide the fact if he cried. I looked up and saw the mirrored sunglasses and I was like, ‘I know he’s crying.’ And I just [lost it].”

Crystal also ditched the guitar and looked more dressed-up than usual for the single. Asked about the changes, she said:

"Just because I have dreadlocks doesn’t mean I can’t be elegant and pretty. I don’t have to wear jeans and ripped-up clothes. I’m a woman.”

She'll also soon be a champion.

It started a capella - and it ended with as much praise as an American Idol contestant has received in years.

Forget the judges for a moment. Check out what a group of impartial observers had to say about Crystal Bowersox's rendition of "People Get Ready" last night, which brought the singer to such tears that she could scarcely finish.

MTV.com: "It was the best performance of the season."

Salon.com: "Forget about goose bumps! I had been filled with the Holy Spirit and was jumping up and down in my humble living room screaming, 'Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, Alleluia, Alleluia!' I became a born-again believer that "American Idol" could actually be redeemed, saved from its lost and depraved ways by its savior, Crystal Bowersox."

GQ.com: "As frontrunner skeptics, it took Bowersox's near collapse into heavy sobbing to finally convince us that her season-long steely calm was not professionalism, but rather a coping device. Despite the crumbling reputation, this is still a big deal, this American Idol show. Crystal seems to know that now."

She's the clear season nine favorite on American Idol, but Crystal Bowersox has never looked comfortable on stage.

The folksy singer admitted many months ago that she had never watched an episode of Idol, and she's been outwardly shaken up when certain contestants - such as Lilly Scott and Katie Stevens - were eliminated this year.

Therefore, it didn't come as a major shock this week when a report leaked out that said Bowersox was close to quitting the competition, but was convinced to stay by Ryan Seacrest.

Crystal on the Red Carpet

On Facebook yesterday, Crystal confirmed this rumor, writing: We all have moments of doubt. As much as I miss my kid, the big picture is this: im doing this for him and my fans. I'm having the time of my life!

Sounds like Bowersox will be sticking around - and thank goodness for that.

On the most lackluster season to date, we don't even want to imagine tuning in to Idol each week and not at least having Crystal to look forward to.

Last week, the American Idol judges saved Michael Lynche from elimination.

But a new report suggets this wasn't the first time a contestant came close to leaving the show, only for an Idol mainstay to step in at the last minute.

According to TMZ, Crystal Bowersox stormed out of the studio last month, sick of all the attention from the competition and asked Ryan Seacrest in the parking lot: "What's the point?"

Blown Away by Bowersox

Crystal, who said prior to this season that she had never watched American Idol, wanted to return to her family in Ohio. How did Seacrest convince Bowersox to stay? By stating that a victory would make her a millionaire and:

"The greatest thing I ever did was make enough money so I could buy my mom a house.  You can buy your mom a house."

At this, Bowersox reportedly changed her mind, a decision Fox executives must be thankful for. Can you imagine this season without Crystal, the clear favorite and most unique singer remaining?

Perish the thought.

The 11 finalists all gave it their best shot, but performances by Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze stood out the most on Tuesday night's American Idol.

Showing why she's been a favorite to become the ninth American Idol winner since her first audition, Crystal channeled her inner Janis Joplin last night.

Bowersox's performance of "Me & Bobby McGee," mentored by none other than Miley Cyrus, is even being called better than the original by some fans.

That may be a stretch ... or is it? Check it out and see ...

Once again, socks were knocked off by Crystal Bowersox. Some weeks, it's like she's in a class by herself and everyone else is angling to be runner-up.

Lee DeWyze held his own Tuesday, however. In one of the night's top covers of Billboard #1 hits, the Chicago product rocked the Box Tops' "The Letter."

Follow the jump to see Lee's performance of the song ...

After last night's incredible rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Long As I Can See The Light," this may need to become a running THG feature:

The Crystal Bowersox Performance of the Week.

Despite being hospitalized earlier in the day for diabetes complications, the American Idol semifinalist strapped on her guitar, didn't complain and established herself as the season nine front-runner.

She even made a funny joke at Simon's expense in the opening video. Check it all out below and sound off: How awesome is Crystal Bowersox?!?

She went from the hospital bed to the American Idol stage to the leader of the season nine pack in just 24 hours.

Indeed, we aren't the first website to shower Crystal Bowersox with praise - and we definitely won't be the last - but it's well-deserved.

On a night of live performances that overshadowed the guys' lackluster efforts the evening before, Bowersox recovered from a dangerous illness and led the way. We run down the top 10 below...

  1. Crystal Bowersox: She gets points for showing up and for not playing the sympathy card. But especially for her unique rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Long As I Can See the Light."
  2. Lilly Scott: A close second. Challenged herself with the Sam Cooke classic “A Change is Gonna Come” and was even better than last week. Love her confidence in just who she is.
  3. Michelle Delamor: Note to Todrick Hall: this is how you re-arrange a song! Michelle comes across as a professional singer and turned a Creed rock single into a ballad.
  4. Siobhan Magnus: The anti-Aretha Franklin sung Franklin's "Think" and showcased her versatility. The place went nuts when she hit her high notes.
  5. Katelyn Epperly: Ellen was off base with this critique. The song was supposed to be slow, and the use of the piano proved that Katelyn has multiple sides to her.
  6. Katie Stevens: She has a great voice and a great personality. The judges have to get over the fact that she's 17 and just let her sing.
  7. Paige Miles: It's always daring to take a song by an American Idol winner, but Miles did Kelly Clarkson's "Walk Away" sort of proud. Definitely needed more of an edge to it.
  8. Didi Benami: We felt terrible for when the tears welled up during the judges' criticism. But "Lean On Me?" Really? It's impossible to make that song your own at this point.
  9. Lacey Brown: Simply not up to par, vocals-wise, with the other contestants.
  10. Haeley Vaughn: We're all for being happy, but her constant smiling freaks us out. She's like a doll of some kind.mi

It's a clear choice, in our view: Lacey and Haeley should go home tonight. What do you think?

Do you sense a theme early on season nine of American Idol?

The show is highlighting young women on guitars, possibly aiming to find the next Taylor Swift. Not exactly a misguided strategy.

Two of the female contestants that have advanced to the semifinals and made a strong impression on viewers are Crystal Bowersox and Janell Wheeler. The former can seriously rock a harmonica, while the latter was admittedly a bundle of nerves in Hollywood, but got the green light from all four judges anyway.

Consider the futures of these aspiring stars and vote below...

Who will advance farther on American Idol?

Earlier today, we also compared semifinalists Andrew Garcia and Todrick Hall. Sound off on these hopefuls chances right now, as well.

Thank goodness it's Hollywood week on American Idol. Goodbye embarrassing contestants, hello major talent!

Before we get to that talent, however, let's also greet Ellen DeGeneres... with open arms. Wasn't she great on her first night as a judge? The comedian was funny (we loved when she had singers moving all around the stage before letting each one through), but also fresh and straightforward.

Ellen won't be Paula Abdul 2.0, sugarcoating every critique and covering up bad performances by telling the contestants how nice they look. She'll bring the criticism, but in a humorous fashion, such as when she told one dude his routine "scared" her and resembled a leopard stalking his prey.

There were also no contrived cat fights, nothing that Ellen did to bring attention to herself. She seemed steady, focused and, of course, funny.

As for the best of the night...

Didi Benami has finalist written all over her. She came across as a more polished Brooke White, strumming her guitar and bringing an emotional singer/songwriter vibe. Probably our favorite performance.

But the "infectious, real" Crystal Bowersox, as Simon put it, was a close second. She also relied on her guitar and had fellow contestants applauding before she even completed "Natural Woman."

The third impressive female was Haeley Vaughn. Only 16, she offers a unique pop/country sound and a healthy dose of charisma. We were very happy to see her advance.

Ellen on Idol

Two men stood out, as well:

  1. Andrew Garcia proved that guitar-playing was a theme for the top performers so far, impressing the judges with a soulful acousting rendition of "Straight Up." We wouldn't refer to him as "genius" or compare him to Adam Lambert (closer to Kris Allen), as Kara did, but certainly someone to keep an eye on.
  2. The same can be said for Casey James, and not just because he took off his shirt for his initial, pre-Hollywood audition. We loved his bluesy number... played with the help of a guitar, of course.

Watch all five of these performances in our American Idol video section and then let us know: WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE?
