Rihanna's appearance at Game Four of the NBA Finals Thursday caused quite a stir, and nearly resulted in a run-in with her embattled ex, Chris Brown, who was a front-row regular at the Orlando Magic-LA Lakers series and throughout the playoffs.

It turns out Rihanna attended the game because she's crushing on Rashard Lewis of the Magic, and she and Brown didn't cross paths, though they came close.

Last night's Game Five, however, was a different story. The two were sitting right next to each other ... or were they? Check out this photo from the game ...

The Los Angeles Lakers essentially wrapped up the NBA Championship last night, as they took a three games to one lead with a 99-91 victory over the Orlando Magic.

Fortunately, a pair of sideline sightings have enabled our staff to ignore the depressing fact that Kobe Bryant will soon be holding up the Larry O'Brien trophy again.

Both Rihanna and Chris Brown sat courtside for the contest. While sources claim the former couple "requested to sit together" at one point, they ended up occupying seats in separate sections.

In one sense, the outing isn't unusual for Rihanna. She was one of a number of celebrities to attend Game Two in Los Angeles. But that was played in her hometown.

Moreover, it didn't take place two days after Rihanna was subpoenaed to appear in court to testify against Brown for beating the daylights out of her.

We hope these duel appearances don't signify a reconciliation between Brown and his former punching bag. She's much better off with Aubrey Graham.

Chris Brown may be back in the public eye more often lately, but the singer has yet to find a way to get rid of that pesky court case hanging over his head.

Seeking to have Brown's felony assault charges thrown out, attorney Mark Geragos requested, and was denied a postponement of his preliminary hearing.

Geragos wanted a hold on the case, claiming the disturbing, leaked police photo of Rihanna's bruised face, obtained by TMZ, compromises Brown's defense.

He had requested access to records of the police's internal investigation, even though per current law, Geragos is only allowed access to the LAPD's records after the preliminary hearing ... which he's trying his hardest to delay.

The California appeals court shot down Geragos' request without giving a reason, and the preliminary hearing is still on schedule for June 22.

The preliminary hearing will determine whether the case against Brown, who has been receiving death threats, goes to trial.

If it does, Rihanna will testify, as we reported last month.

"If the preliminary hearing goes forward, she is legally required to be there, and will answer all questions truthfully," her attorney, Donald Etra, said.

Los Angeles prosecutors have already subpoenaed Rihanna to appear in court to testify in the assault case against her ex-boyfriend, Chris Brown.

The "Umbrella" singer was served with the subpoena in person Tuesday afternoon in Los Angeles, summoning her to the June 22 preliminary hearing in court.

If it gets to that point, Rihanna will also be subject to cross-examination by Geragos. The felony case could end any time with a plea bargain, making the hearing unnecessary, but the chances of that happening are unclear.

Brown has actively sought a plea for months, hoping to avoid jail time. The fact it has reached this stage suggests the sides are not too close to an agreement.

If Rihanna does end up testifying, it "can make or break the case," says L.A. criminal defense attorney Jeffery Rubenstein, who is not involved with the case.

"Rihanna's willingness to testify and be truthful about what happened is a step closer to convicting Brown. On the other hand, if prosecutors fail to present a case, Geragos can seek to dismiss or reduce the charges on the spot."

Regardless, he might want to tell Chris to rethink is PR strategy.

Chris Brown has been criticized by many (The Hollywood Gossip included) for what he allegedly did to Rihanna, and how he has conducted himself since.

But to anyone threatening his life ... get one of your own. Seriously, ridiculing him on gossip blogs is fun, you should try it. No need to get all violent.

A reliable source tells the Chicago Sun-Times that Brown has a whole group of folks protecting him these days because the music star has become the target of death threats the authorities believe are actually legitimate.

In recent months, Brown, who was partying with Khloe Kardashian at a Miami klub last night, is rarely seen without a minimum of three very visible bodyguards - of the enormous variety - whenever he’s gone outside his house.

On top of that, there reportedly are always three or four others around the singer who are "incognito, said a longtime LAPD insider - stressing that at least one or two have been women, "but who are easily as tough as any man."

Death threats against Chris Brown have been coming from a group (or just one person claiming to be a group) calling itself the Women’s Protection Action League.

The alleged threats are "definitely tied" to the charges the entertainer beat the living hell out of Rhianna earlier this year. Brown is said to be "totally paranoid" about the threats on his life and has become obsessed with his security.

There have been some indications the potential assassin could be disguised as a paparazzi — yet another reason for Brown to despise celebrity gossip personnel.

Paranoid he may be, but that hasn't stopped his PR blitz.

Dude is far from under the radar these days. Here are more Chris Brown pics from last night's NBA Finals, where he and Omarion watched Orlando beat L.A.:

Chris Brown is keeping up with Khloe Kardashian! Sort of.

The celebrities both partied at LIV nightclub at the Fontainebleau Hotel, but as part of a big group that included Bow Wow, Mario and Omarion. Chris and Bow Wow were last seen together collaborating on these awesome YouTube videos.

Chris and Khloe "were not there 'together,'" a source tells E! News.

The 20-year-old Brown was seen chatting up girls poolside at the posh hotel, where Khloe's filming her new reality show Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami.

Last week, a staff member from The Hollywood Gossip tried to infiltrate said reality show and win a date with the lovely Kourtney, but it was not to be.

This isn't the first time Brown and Khloe Kardashian have been linked.

Khloe was supposedly seen with him before in South Beach, according to celeb gossip news reports, but it turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.

Chris Brown is scheduled to appear at a June 22 hearing on criminal threats and assault charges after he allegedly beat the crap out of Rihanna.

While the singer would undoubtedly prefer a plea bargain, which he has sought for months, Rihanna will testify against him if required by the court.

For about three months following his "alleged" brutal assault on Rihanna on February 8, Chris Brown was content to lay low as his lawyer did the talking.

In late May, for whatever reason, his self-imposed exile ended.

Rihanna and Abusive Boyfriend

Chilling with Usher, balling with Shaq, posing lame YouTube shout-outs and leaking a set of cute, post-coital pics of himself with Rihanna, the embattled star has embarked on a PR blitz of sorts even as he faces serious felony charges.

But if Chris Brown really wants us to believe he "ain't a monsta," maybe he should start by not being a tool and posing like a complete thug in pics like this.

Just a thought.

The Chris Brown PR blitz continues.

The same weekend as pre-beating, post-coital Brown and Rihanna pics found their way online mysteriously, a friend took the opportunity to plug Chris' new album.

"Chris is very focused," says songwriter Robert Allen, who is working with Brown on his upcoming record, tentatively titled Graffiti. "He knows how to deal with whatever is going on and is willing to do what he has to do to please his fans."

Hey, you gotta deal with whatever life throws at you. If peeps hate on you after you battered your girlfriend into a near-coma, you just gotta say f*%k that noise.

As a wise man once said: all the haters ... they's just haters.

Of Brown's shifting musical style, Allen says "Chris is experimenting and trying a lot of different things. We've been making things really eclectic. The direction of this album is really fun and free spirited. It's like a collage."

Brown, who had kept a low profile for months, recently broke his silence in a pair of absurd YouTube videos, when he declared, "I ain't a monster."

"You want to go away so your audience can miss you some," Allen says of why Brown has laid low. "But he's so happy and ready for this next album to break through and make a big impact. He's predicting this will be his biggest album."

We're predicting that he's still the biggest tool around.

It seems hard to believe now, but there was a time when Rihanna lay next to boyfriend Chris Brown with a look of satisfaction - as opposed to terror - on her face.

There was a time when the term "banging" between this couple was a synonym for love-making, not face-pummeling.

Rihanna's Rear End?

There was even a time when Chris Brown made Rihanna laugh, not bleed out of numerous orifices as the result of a beating so brutal it made professional boxers wince.

Those days are long gone, of course. But the following photos serve as a reminder of happier times between this pair.

While not as intimate as the recently-discovered Rihanna nude pics, we've uncovered a few shots of the singers from the days of yore. Where did it all go wrong?

From the bedroom to the courtroom: Rihanna will testify as a witness for the prosecution in a preliminary hearing on felony charges against Brown for his alleged assault on her.

So, where did these photos come from? It's unclear. But we know this:

Chris Brown has an album coming out, Chris Brown says he is not a monster and now these pics have surfaced that are meant to show Chris Brown's soft side.

Seems like someone is doing his publication relations homework to us. What a violent phony.

It looks like Rihanna may finally break her silence - under oath - about the alleged assault on her earlier this year by boyfriend Chris Brown.

Following a hearing in Los Angeles this morning, Rihanna's lawyer, Donald Etra, said prosecutors intend to subpoena the singer to appear at a June 22 hearing, so that a court can determine if there's enough evidence to proceed with a trial.

RiRi Topless

"The DA has advised me that she will be subpoenaed [to testify]," Etra said, noting that Rihanna would therefore be subject to cross-examination by Chris Brown's attorney, Mark Geragos. "She absolutely will comply."

Meanwhile, Geragos was unsuccessful in gaining access to police records to find out who leaked the now-infamous battered Rihanna photo.

In denying Geragos' request, L.A. Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg said that while she agreed the leaked photo was unfortunate, she argued it had nothing to do Brown's arrest and wouldn't significantly impact his right to a fair trial.

"It matters to me not if your client is high-profile or not," the judge said. "I don't believe you're entitled [to demand access to police records]."

The attorney has been relentlessly pursuing the origin of the photo, likely trying to use it as leverage to secure a plea deal for Brown, who he believes cannot be fairly tried based on prospective jurors' existing perception of him.

Asked, after his motion was denied, if he's confident he can keep Brown from doing time, Geragos replied, "I'm not going to address any of that."

Brown, 20, has pleaded not guilty to allegedly beating Rihanna on February 8. If convicted, he faces up to four years and eight months in prison.

The embattled star was hit with another lawsuit earlier today, filed by a celebrity news photographer who alleges Brown's bodyguards assaulted him.

Experts say the felony case likely won't go to trial, but will end in a plea bargain, which could happen any time. However, this has been the theory for two months, which suggests Geragos and the D.A. have yet to find a mutually acceptable deal.

In a ridiculous video posted Tuesday with his pal Bow Wow, Brown sort of broke his silence for the first time since the incident and told fans "I ain't a monster" in an apparent reference to the case. His reps had no comment.

Meanwhile, Rihanna was spotted getting cozy with Canadian hip-hop artist Aubrey "Drake" Graham, although the rapper stated they're just friends.

Ha, no, not the one in which he decided it would be cool to use Rihanna's face as a speedbag and left her unconscious in his rented Lamborghini.

This is a different beating, and Brown's fists were not involved - just his bodyguards'.

On the most recent stop on his Act Like a Tool / Return to Public Life Tour, Chris Brown played some pickup basketball with NBA star Shaquille O'Neal.

No violence broke out there - but according to a photographer, what took place on an L.A. basketball court back in March was quite a different story.

According to the new lawsuit, filed in L.A. County Superior Court, the celebrity gossip photographer claims it all went down just weeks after the Rihanna incident, when he shot a photo of Chris Brown playing b-ball with his friends.

The photographer claims Chris' bodyguards yelled at him - so he tried to leave the gym ... but an L.A. Fitness employee tried to block his escape.

He then fell down a stairwell, which allowed the bodyguards to catch up with him - where they, "picked him up by his shorts and physically assaulted him."

The man claims he was a paying member at the gym and had every right to be there. He is suing Chris Brown and LA Fitness for assault and battery, false imprisonment, infliction of emotional distress, negligence and premises liability.

Interestingly, this is the same guy who attempted to sue Pierce Brosnan over a violent incident with the star in Malibu - but that case was dismissed.

Chris Brown lawyer, Mark Geragos, said in a statement: "The is a specious and frivolous lawsuit by one of the paparazzi seeking publicity and a payday. He's done this before and lost. We will vigorously defend against this."

Can't wait for Brown and Bow Wow's lame video statement on this story.
