While Brooke Mueller was utterly wasted on Christmas Eve, when she was allegedly attacked by Charlie Sheen, the actor was also far from sober.

For someone that's battled substance abuse for years, this development is weighing on the sitcom star, a friend tells People.

"He let himself down by drinking," the source said, adding that "[Charlie] has two little boys and he does not want to get divorced again."

The latest indications are that Mueller feels the same way. Her lawyer says Brooke wants to save her marriage and move on from this well-publicized, terrible incident.

But what about the fact that Sheen reportedly went after his wife with a weapon? His friend offers the following, questionable defense:

"Did he have a knife with him? Yes. It's a pocketknife that his dad gave him 22 years ago, which he always carries. It's not like he got a kitchen knife and went after her."

Hear that, police?!? It's not a crime if the knife you use against your partner is a family heirloom that's always on your person, right?

On the other hand, perhaps Brooke Mueller does not want to divorce Charlie Sheen.

A few hours after an anonymous source said the end of this couple's marriage was definitely a possibility, a more reliable insider tells a different story.

Mueller has hired criminal defense lawyer Yale Galanter, who represented OJ Simpson for years, to represent her. Earlier today, he said to People:

"Brooke and Charlie are very passionate about each other, they love each other and want to try and save their marriage. They had a bad night and want to get beyond it. They want to try and resolve their issues."

Responding to allegations that his client recanted her side to police, Galanter said she instead "[minimized] her story, like many wives in a similar situation do, when they realize their husband could go to jail."

The attorney has filed documents to alter the protection order put in place by Colorado police.

He says Mueller is anxious to reconnect with Sheen because "they have absolutely gorgeous little babies and will do all they can to work out their problems."

According to reports, Charlie Sheen went ballistic and grabbed a knife when Brooke Mueller said she wanted a divorce on Christmas Eve.

Therefore, we can understand why a source close to the couple wishes to remain anonymous when he/she says:

"Brooke and Charlie still love each other, but they are very different. [They] will make their best effort at counseling, [but] divorce is definitely a possibility."

Couldn't anything be considered a definite possibility? Proper grammar aside, this insider confirms to People that the couple isn't giving up on one another just yet.

"For the good of the children they definitely want to see if counseling will help before anything further is decided."

The Two and a Half Men star is currently back in Los Angeles, awaiting a February court date. There's no word yet on how these charges will affect Sheen's status on that awful sitcom.

Mueller, meanwhile, remains in Aspen and was spotted at a popular, local hot spot this week. Witnesses say she and friends "just hung out and listened to music." But has the final note on her marriage already been played?

Time will tell.

The most astounding aspect of the recent Charlie Sheen allegations? It isn't that the actor may have held a knife to Brooke Mueller's throat and threatened to have her professionally killed.

Instead, it's the fact that Denise Richards now seems like the sane one in her former marriage to Sheen.

Richards and Sheen have two daughters together (Sam and Lola; you may have recognize them from the countless paparazzi photos Richards posed the kids for, and/or from her nauseating E! reality series) and got messily divorced in 2007.

Therefore, if there's one woman that can relate to the troubles Mueller has gone through with Sheen, it's this self-serving, talentless actress.

Seemingly in response to the scandal surrounding her ex, Richards Tweeted today:

It's hard not to wonder what else the Q-list celebrity could spill. She's already said Sheen exposes his private parts to minors over the Internet and beats on dogs.

But it looks like Denise Richards has found a way to sneak back into the celebrity gossip spotlight. Damn you, Charlie Sheen, for creating this opportunity!

Brooke Mueller 911 call appears to be damaging enough evidence against Charlie Sheen, as the actor awaits a February 8 hearing regarding assault charges against him.

But that's almost nothing compared to an affidavit written by Colorado police officer Rick Magnuson, who was on the Christmas Eve scene at the Sheen's rented Aspen residence. In the document, Magnuson says Sheen held a knife to Mueller's throat and threatened her life.

In disturbing detail, this is how the officer recounts went down at the home:

• When cops arrived, Sheen was in a bedroom and Mueller was in the kitchen.
• Magnuson accompanied Sheen into the basement, where the latter explained his recent marital problems and said his wife "abuses alcohol."
• The argument started at 3:30 a.m. because Mueller grew jealous when Sheen "shared a song for his daughter whom he fathered with another woman." The actor said she threatened to divorce him and take the kids.

• Both sides screamed and slapped, according to Sheen, who admitted to breaking his wife's glasses in front of her. He said he never pushed, hit or used a knife against her.
• Sheen admitted he possessed a four-inch knife that was on the premises. When Magnuson discovered it inside Sheen's bag, the blade was unlocked in the "open" position.
• Mueller confirmed that she and Sheen argued and that she mentioned a divorce. At that, she said Sheen grabbed her by the upper part of her throat while straddling her on the bed, pulled out a knife, held it to her throat and said: "You better be in fear. If you tell anybody, I'll kill you... I have ex-police I can hire who know how to get the job done and they won't leave any trace."
• Magnuson observed "red marks on the upper part of the front of her neck" and took Sheen into custody.

Like the quality of Two and a Half Men, Charlie Sheen finds himself in a bad situation.

Earlier today, Colorado police released the 911 call the actor's wife, Brooke Mueller, made from the couple's home on Christmas Eve. Sheen was arrested that evening on charges of second-degree assault.

On the phone, Mueller says her husband "has a knife" and is "packing to leave," supposedly because authorities are on the way. Stating she's in a secure room, away from Sheen, Mueller also says she is "scared for [her] life" and she was "threatened" by the weapon.

Approximately halfway through the conversation, the operator asks Brooke to identify herself and her attacker. She breaks down in tears when uttering the name "Charlie Sheen."

Late last week, Mueller recanted the accusations against her husband. Her blood alcohol level at the scene registered .13, far over the legal limit in Colorado.

Still, as everyone that's ever drunk dialed can attest to, one can be wasted and still be telling the truth. The 911 call - which you can listen to below - appears to be damning evidence against Sheen.

Sources state Sheen grew enraged when Mueller demanded a divorce, while other insiders say she moved out in November and the actor flew in to Aspen just to spend the holidays with his sons, Max and Bob.

We have another update on the troubles between Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller.

A friend tells People the couple will undergo marriage counseling, while also detailing the situation from Christmas Eve.

"They were fighting at a dinner in a friend’s house and it continued until the next morning," a source said. "Both of them were drinking and neither was supposed to be. They both have histories of alcohol abuse and have made every effort to stop. But things got out of hand."

Rumors have swirled about what actually went down between the pair, with certain reports stating Sheen pulled a knife on Mueller; and others claiming Mueller was drunk when she dialed 911 and later recanted the charges against her husband.

The same friend says Sheen will take anger management classes and reside in Los Angeles for the near future. Mueller will remain in Aspen, Colorado.

As for their twin sons:

"The boys are fine, so precious. They knew nothing about a fight between their parents... After this unfortunate event, [Charlie and Brooke] need to be apart for awhile."

Charlie Sheen has been released from prison.

The actor posted $8,500 bond last night, following a significant update to the assault charges leveled against him.

Immediately prior to the bail hearing, wife Brooke Mueller recanted her story to a Colorado police officer. She said she was drunk when she dialed 911 (her blood alcohol test at the time measured a whopping .13) and reportedly backed up Sheen's story that he was merely defending himself.

Still, authorities will pursue charges against the Two and a Half Men star for now.

Sheen has hired Colorado attorney Richard Cummins and his next court date is schedule for February 8.

He may be best known for starring in Two and a Half Men, but Charlie Sheen now has one giant problem on his hands.

The actor has been arrested for second-degree assault, menacing and criminal mischief. Sheen was picked up in Aspen for an alleged incident of domestic violence against wife Brooke Mueller.

While the police may claim Sheen celebrated Christmas by honoring Chris Brown, his rep says otherwise:

"Do not be mislead by appearance. Appearance and reality can be as different as night and day. It would benefit everyone not to jump to any conclusion."

Sheen - who has been accused of sleeping with hookers, beating up dogs and keeping pornography on his computer while married to Denise Richards - is being held without bond.

He'll remain in jail until Monday, due to a Colorado law that requites a protection order between those arrested for domestic violence and their victims.

Sheen and Mueller got married in May 2008 and welcomed twins in October of that year.

** UPDATE: It's been confirmed that Mueller called 911 and claimed her husband laid his hands on her - but Sheen told cops that Mueller was the aggressor and he was simply trying to keep her away.
