On this week’s episode of The Voice, two of the coaches cut their teams down to size and the remaining eight contenders vied for spots in the finals.

The show also featured lives performance by Blake Shelton and Maroon 5, Adam Levine's band, with Christina Aguilera pitching in on the latter.

Okay, on to the actual show. Cee Lo Green picked Nakia to go with America's choice, Vicci Martinez to stay. Pretty much no-brainers to advance.

America picked Javier Colon from Adam's side, following his rendition of “Angel” on last week's show. Adam selected Casey Weston to move on.

Eight are left, two from each team. Four will go home next, leaving four in the finals of The Voice. The cream is beginning to rise to the top.

For a show that's branded itself as the anti-American Idol, The Voice sure felt like American Idol last night, with eight finalists singing solo for votes.

There was even a girl from American Idol closing out the night!

Eight of the 16 finalists performed Tuesday, with the rest on tap next week. While the show has lost considerable steam since its premiere, due largely to its complicated format, these performances were strong.

Let's break them down!

Raquel Castro performed Ke$ha "Blow," a song notable mostly for its beat and its video, as Ke$ha cannot actually sing, channeling mentor Christina.

Mama Aguilera, along with the rest of the panel, loved it. America should do, especially coming from the youngest and smallest Voice cast member.

After four weeks, the battle rounds have concluded on The Voice. Each coach’s team is now complete, with America voting on the 16 finalists' fates from now on.

Two of the youngest contestants, and two of the shiest. They tried to overcome these obstacles with a rendition of “I’ll Stand By You,” and they did.

Well, mostly. If we're being honest, Blake seemed disappointed, as "both looked scared to death," and their performance was lacking in confidence.

With only one week of battle rounds to go, The Voice was ... well, it was totally overshadowed by both American Idol and Dancing With the Stars last night.

Sorry, NBC. Still, each contestant got his or her due, the judges pared down the field efficiently, and we moved one step closer to the 16-person finals.

Let's break down Tuesday's battles and survivors on The Voice ...

Team Adam Levine - Rebecca Loebe vs. Devon Barley

Probably the best duet of the night, they sang Radiohead's hit song “Creep,” which Devon had never heard before, yet jibed perfectly with Rebecca on.

The Voice continued its "Battle Round" last night, pitting each judge's team members against one another for the right to be judged by America in the finals.

The contestants sang their hearts out and left everything on the floor in an effort to wow Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera.

So who survived these winner-take-all sing-offs? Let's break it down:

The Voice Battle Round - Javier Colon vs. Angela Wolff

When Adam paired Angela Wolff and Javier Colon, Angela admitted that she was just excited for the chance to sing alongside Javier, he's that good.

He was. His rendition of "Stand by Me" was almost angelic.

"There is an extremely beautiful girl on stage right now, but all I can do is sit here and go, 'Javier,'" said Blake, who just married Miranda Lambert.

"That makes me feel strange a little bit," Javier joked, to which the country star retorted, "Imagine how I feel!" P.S. Levine obviously chose Javier.

After its first two episodes earned strong ratings and critical praise, NBC did the logical thing and changed the format and time slot of The Voice completely.

The blind auditions at 9 p.m. were so last week.

The battle rounds began Tuesday night, and in them, each coach pairs two teammates and challenges them to perform a duet, choosing a winner at the end.

Battles will continue until each of the four teams is cut in half. Luckily, the coaches' charisma and the singers' talent again made up for the confusing format. 

Team Christina Aguilera: Frenchie Davis vs. Tarralyn Ramsey

The diva started things off with a bang by asking two other divas, Frenchie Davis and Tarralyn Ramsey, to trade verses of "Single Ladies." The tension was palpable.

Tarralyn and Frenchie's rehearsal footage was pretty terrific, as was the resulting performance. Tarralyn appeared to be in the driver's seat here. However ...

After The Voice premiere captivated 11 million viewers last week, could the NBC series' second episode keep up the momentum as the blind auditions continued?

Despite another confusing twist - because Cee-Lo was the only one to fill his team of eight, a group of initially rejected singers got a second shot - we'd say yes.

If anything, The Voice crammed too much into last night, but if the other option is to drag this proces out and give us 3-4 blind audition episodes, we'll take it.

The rosters are now set as we head into the "battle" portion next week. Here's a look at the four teams and some of the auditions that won spots on them:

The Voice, to hear host Carson Daly tell it, premiered Tuesday on NBC as "a singing competition unlike any other, because it puts vocal ability first."

Sort of.

Before we even get to the musical performances on the series the network hopes will coax you away from American Idol, here's how it works ...

1. Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine must each draft eight singers to form a team in the "blind auditions."
2. The singers come out to wow the coaches, whose backs are turned, with their voices alone. If one of the coaches likes The Voice, then ...
3. He/she presses a magic button that turns his chair around; if he's the only judge to turn, that vocalist is automatically on his/her team.
4. If more than one coach presses his button, the vocalist who's being fought over gets to choose which coach he/she wants to work with.
5. Once each coach has chosen eight singers, he or she personally trains the members of that team to make them better vocalists.
6. Then comes Round Two, in which each coach is responsible for cutting half the members of his or her team. Gonna be rough.
7. In its last round, The Voice will start to look a lot more familiar. The 16 remaining singers will perform live. Viewers will vote.
8. The victor receives $100,000 and a record deal. Yay!
