I am a heterosexual married woman. I believe that it is not within the role of the government to exclude anyone from the right of marriage. I was very disappointed that we in California, of all places, could not support this right for all our citizens. That said, it is just as important that we respect and uphold the rights of freedom of religion and freedom of speech. I believe that Ms. Prejean made a sincere effort to answer the question honestly with regard to her beliefs. I actually applaud her for being honest when it may have been to her advantage to be more circumspect. I also feel that her answer demonstrated an effort to be respectful to the gay community despite her personal/religious beliefs.
