Summer might not officially begin until June 21, but unofficially, the hottest season of the year is here. Bathing suits, sunscreen, and the beach are all calling our names.

You know what else this season needs? More... MUSIC. Songs of summer, to be exact.

What, exactly, IS a "song of summer"? Right now it's what every artist is trying to acquire: the most played song of the season that most ... well, reminds us of summer.

Our favorite warm-weather jams conjure up images of bodies of water, dancing, frozen and/or boozy drinks, and maybe even some lovin'. Preferably all of the above.

To that end, we've compiled a playlist of 21 songs of summer, comprised of #1 hits and hot songs we love that remind us of our carefree time in the sun.

Roll your windows down, turn your radio up, and cruise through this gallery ...

Summertime
THE song of summer, Will Smith's "Summertime" has been oft-imitated, never duplicated.

The fans have spoken - and Carly Rae Jepsen has listen.

On last night's American Idol performance show (which pitted Candice Glover against Kree Harrison in their final stage showdown), Jepsen debuted the track "Take a Picture."

What made it so unusual?

As part of the Coca Cola Perfect Harmony contest, fans actually voted on everything from the single's lyrics to what Carly's backup dancers would be wearing. Did they make the right choices?

The Canadian singer, in her continual quest to prove she is more than just a "Call Me Maybe" phenomenon, has released a new music video for the track "Tonight I’m Getting Over You."

It was a Times Square celebration filled with revelers, confetti, Kathy Griffin going down on Anderson Cooper and music.

A whole lot of music.

Justin Bieber went acoustic; Hammer and Psy went Gangnam Style; Taylor Swift went red; and a trio of other artists also took to the New York City stage.

As anyone with a computer knows, there have been an endless number of Call Me Maybe covers since this Carly Rae Jepsen track blew up a few months ago.

But a Ukrainian artist who goes by the name "Aza" is set to take legal action because she alleges the hit single itself is a ripoff of her "Hunky Santa."

Listen to it here and decide if Aza has any reason to claim that producers simply tweaked her song in order to create Jepsen's version:

According to TMZ, a lawsuit will be filed today in which Aza seeks unspecific damages. Among those included as its target will be Scooter Braun, the manager for both Jepsen and Justin Bieber.

Following the relative (read: HUGE) success of "Call Me Maybe" - which spawned about six dozen covers - Carly Rae Jepsen is back with a new music video.

In honor of "This Kiss," the video mostly depicts the Canadian artist in a very good mood, partying with friends inside a house and on the street, culminating in a swim and a kiss with a handsome young man.

Call her ready to move on with a new hit.

After giving fans a listen to her next single, "This Kiss," Carly Rae Jepsen has now come out with a preview of the track's official music video.

Featuring the rising superstar at a party… and a swimming pool… and in the middle of the street with friends, Jepsen ends up jumping into the water and sharing a smooch with a member of the opposite sex.

See for yourself here:

Will "This Kiss" elicit the same sort of Call Me Maybe covers that helped propel Jepsen's career? We doubt it. But the tune sure is catchy!

Carly Rae Jepsen and Justin Bieber are about to make beautiful music together... literally!

The 26-year old will release a new album on September 18 (titled "Kiss") and one of the tracks included on it will be a duet with the young man who made Jepsen famous.

It's called "Beautiful" and you can sample about 90 seconds of it here:

Bieber, of course, helped sign Jepsen to his manager's label. He then appeared in the first-ever lip dub of "Call Me Maybe" and also performed that single with her in London.

What do you think of "Beautiful?"

Thanks to the Carly Rae Jepsen smash sweeping the nation, we've been treated to a number of hilarious Call Me Maybe covers.

But Insane Clown Posse members Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope have now filmed the first-ever Mystery Science 300-esque breakdown of that track's music video - and it's downright awesome.

The face-painted artists sit around and breakdown the action in front of them, from commenting on whether they'd get it on with Jepsen... to the video's unrealistic portrayal of a gardener... to the band's resemblance to the CreditScore.com guys... to the "twist" of an ending that seems to truly take the duo by surprise.

Who came up with this idea? We have no clue. But let's hope it isn't the last we see of Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope serving as music video critics.

It's coming out on September 18, and now we know what it will look like.

We're talking about the new Carly Rae Jepsen album, of course, which will be titled "Kiss" and whose cover art has been unveiled on the Internet. What do you think?

Jepsen has enjoyed a truly monstrous year. Not simply because "Call Me Maybe" smashed multiple Billboard record charts, but because she was the subject of a sex tape rumor. That's always a sign you've made it!

Another sign? The singer's beloved track will be covered on the Glee Season 4 premiere.

Are you excited for Jepsen's upcoming album? Will you purchase it?
