It's safe to say we didn't expect a lot from American Idol last night.

12 songs by 6 contestants? In two hours? One of which would be a cover of... Burt Bacharach?!? Wake us when it's over, right?

But then Candice Glover took to the stage and, many would say, made history. It's impossible to determine the greatest performance of all-time in Idol.

But Glover may have just given us the greatest overall night, positively owning "Don't Make Me Over" and "Love Song." Watch both renditions now:

As for Janelle Arthur, Amber Holcomb and company?

Six contestants remain on American Idol Season 12.

And Lazaro Arbos is somehow still one of them.

The American Idol Top 8 took their act to Detroit this week, covering songs by artists who hail from the Motor City.

Did this variation on Motown Night pay off? For some, yes.

Janelle Arthur broke out her guitar and broke down "You Keep Me Hangin’ On" in very impressive fashion. See for yourself:

For others? Far less so, most notably Angie Miller, who failed to show the "fun crazy side" she promised prior to her failure to really rock out on "Shop Around."

And Lazaro Arbos, who attempted to cover Stevie Wonder and whose voice was simply not up to the challenge. Will it finally be time to say goodbye to Arbos tonight?

The American Idol Top 9 tackled the Fab 4 this week.

Yes, it was the annual Beatles songbook-themed night for Candice Glover, Burnell Taylor and our other Season 12 finalists.

Which contestants stand the best chance of moving on?

Glover was her typically excellent self on "Come Together," but she may have been overshadowed by two other female hopefuls:

The American Idol top 10 took to the live stage last night to sing for your vote, with the women once again outshining the men. By a wide margin.

But one female stood above her talented peers, as took Shirley Bassey’s "I (Who Have Nothing)" and truly made it her own.

Glover impressed the judges and viewers with both her power and control on the ballad, infusing it with modern-day R&B and jazz riffs to make it sound different (better?) than previous versions sang by Jordin Sparks and Haley Reinhart.

Watch/listen now, vote on the best of the top 10 and decide: is Candice Glover the finalist to beat?

The American Idol Top 10 gave it their all Wednesday with "Songs of the Idols," i.e. tracks used on the show by previous contestants or later released by winners.

Basically, hooray for Kelly Clarkson tributes!

It's hard to handicap a clear favorite right now, but as Randy Jackson put it, Angie Miller, Candice Glover, and Kree Harrison look like they're in it to win it.

Take a look at those strong efforts below:

The vocals and performances of the above three seemed to put them in the top tier last night, though there are many weeks (and voter surprises) to come.

As for the best - and worst - of the rest? Read on ...

The pre-Season 12 hype was proven correct on the first live American Idol show of the year Tuesday:

These ladies can really wail!

Among the top performances of the evening were Breanna Steer covering Beyonce's "Flaws & All," Kree Harrison making like Faith Hill on "Stronger" and definitely Candice Glover belting out "Ordinary People."

Watch R&B swagger meet some seriously old-school jazz in this video of the hopeful:

Will a woman finally break the hold men have had over American Idol over the past few seasons?

If so, it will come down to one of these 10 women, all of whom have advanced to the Season 12 semifinals.

There's the early front-runner (Candice Glover). There's the most polarizing contestant since Adam Lambert (Zoanette Johnson) - and there are 8 others.

And then there were 15.

American Idol narrowed down its Season 12 field some more last night, as 10 women sang for five spots.

In the end, half were eliminated and we were left with the 10 total female semifinalists - a quintet from last Wednesday mixed with these  Sudden Death survivors - who will battle it out next week on the first live shows of the season.

Follow all that? Let's just move on to the ladies who will be moving on, shall we?

Scroll down for their identities, for the song that helped them advance and, of course, to debate their merits as Season 12 semifinalists...
