It's rather clear at this point: Bruno Mars was the proper choice to perform at halftime of this year's Super Bowl.

With thousands of votes cast, over 75% of THG readers have given the singer's halftime show an A.

But Jody Rosen, a New York magazine, initially took issue with Mars as the game's selection, saying he isn't a true star because he doesn't have a "clothing line" or "fragrance."

In response, Mars appeared on Ellen this week and blasted this take as "by far the most disgusting thing I've heard."

By selecting Bruno Mars as this year's Super Bowl halftime act, those behind the NFL's biggest game pretty much guaranteed that we wouldn't be adding to our collection of Crazy Celebrity Wardrobe Malfunctions.

But that's okay.

There are few acts in the music business more universally appreciated than Mars, who combines pop with jazz, a smooth voice with show-stopping dance moves, and who was joined at MetLife Stadium today by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

How did the solo artist and the iconic rock band do as a team?

Pretty darn well, as the show opened with "Locked Out of Heaven” and "Runaway Baby" before the Peppers came in for "Give It Away" and Mars closed with a troop-inspired "Just the Way You Are."

Watch the full performance now and then scroll down for a collection of the other memorable Super Bowl halftime shows:

What grade would you give the Bruno Mars Super Bowl halftime performance?

Mike Ditka and... Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball?"

Two things we certainly never thought would come together, but alas, we were wrong!

A new Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime show spot aired during last night's Grammy Awards, bringing together the magic of music and the great sport of football.

The ad features pigskin greats like Terry Bradshaw (ahem, dressed like bedazzled cowboy), Deion Sanders and Shannon Sharpe.

But the real kicker (get it?) is Mike "Miley" Ditka, who appears singing his heart out on a giant wrecking ball.

Of course, these aren't the real musical performers at next Sunday's big game.

Billboard Artist of the Year Bruno Mars is set to take the stage during halftime. (Sorry, Ditka.)

Watch the hilarious spot and let us know what you think!

Bruno Mars will kick off 2014 by performing at halftime of the Super Bowl on February 2.

But the talented singer has another reason to celebrate today, and it's related to the impressive ride he went on throughout 2013: Mars has been named Billboard Artist of the Year.

Bruno Mars at the EMAs

Bruno's album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," enjoyed an amazing 10-month run on the Billboard 200 chart and also spawned a trio of Top 10 singles -- "Locked Out of Heaven," "When I Was Your Man" and "Treasure."

Freida Pinto is front and center in Bruno Mars' just-released "Gorilla" music video, playing a stripper by the name of Isabella who is new to the pole-dancing game.

Mars co-wrote the song and directed the video. Actor Luis Gusman is the seedy club owner who introduces Pinto's character as "the new girl in town."

In the six-minute video, Bruno watches men throw dollar bills at Freida as she grinds on the pole, whips her hair back and forth and touches her body.

Watch the provocative Bruno Mars "Gorilla" video below:

"You got your legs up in the sky / With the devil in your eyes," Mars croons, regarding his muse. "Let me hear you say you want it all / Say it now, say it now."

As you may have guessed, the two end up together.

Bruno Mars turns 28 years old today.

But the singer has already received quite the birthday gift, of course: he'll be performing at halftime of Super Bowl XLVIII on February 2.

Those looking to purchase something for the musical superstar should take note, however. That game will be played outdoors in New Jersey. In the dead of winter. The guy may need a heavy winter coat.

A multiple-time Grammy Award winner, Mars was overshadowed at this year's VMAs by Miley Cyrus (ever heard of her?), though his rendition of "Gorilla" may actually have been the best performance of the evening.

Grammy-winning singer Bruno Mars will perform at halftime of Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014, a person familiar with the NFL's entertainment plans told the AP.

The season-ending event is set for February 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Yes, an outdoor stadium minutes from New York City. In February.

The potential for bad weather, marketing tie-ins and a deluge of media, advertising and branding giants may make this Big Game the biggest yet.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently noted that there's "already more buzz around this Super Bowl this year than any Super Bowl in its history."

The halftime performance will be a major stage for Mars, as the telecast has drawn over 100 million viewers in the United States alone in recent years.

Football season kicks off in earnest today.

Bruno Mars' live performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night may not have gotten the attention of some others, but was it the best?

The singer treated the Barclays Center crowd to a rendition of "Gorilla," wearing a leopard-print button-down as beams of neon-green lights rained down:

Mars, accompanied by a horn section on his jazzy new song, marked one of the night's tamer moments, even as blasts of fire erupted during the chorus.

When you're going up against Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and the abomination that is Miley Cyrus, the bar has been set awfully high ... or low. Hard to say.

In any case, with the possible exception of Justin Timberlake, Mars offered a level of talent and a brand of artistry unmatched by the bulk of the telecast.

The singer performed immediately following his win for Best Male Video. Watch it above and tell us, who was the best performer of the evening?

On a night that saw Danielle Bradbery crowned The Voice winner, Bruno Mars treated us to an entertaining performance on the fourth season finale.

Dressed in all-red outfit, the 27-year-old singer had the crowd dance and sing to his "Treasure," a single from his latest album, Unorthodox Jukebox.

Here's the dynamic performer accompanied by his band, The Hooligans.

In other musical highlights, past and future Voice coach Christina Aguilera performed "Feel This Moment," while Cher debuted her new song "Woman's World."

Which guest star was your favorite on Tuesday's finale event?

Very, very sad news this week for Bruno Mars:

The musician's mother, Bernadette Hernandez, died suddenly of a brain aneurysm. She was only 55 years old.

A publicist for the singer's music label confirmed that the passing took place yesterday at Queens Medical Center in Honolulu. No other details are available at this time.

Hernandez was a hula dancer and a singer who immigrated from the Philippines. She helped support and nurture her son's music interest from a young age.

Our thoughts go out to Bruno and his loved ones.
