While not defending Sarah Palin's crosshairs map and election-oriented Tweets about "reloading," Barbara Walters still feels kind of bad for her.

On The View, Babs insists that Sarah isn't responsible for the shooting in Arizona perpetrated by Jared Lee Loughner, "a deranged young man."

“Whether that speared him on or whether he is just a very sick person, we don’t know," Walters says, but we all need to stop pointing fingers ...

"To blame Sarah Palin I think is very unfair to her," she added.

We agree. We have said the same all along. Sarah Palin is not responsible, directly or indirectly, for the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Criticisms of her vitriolic rhetoric, low class tactics and bull$h!t story about how the crosshairs weren't meant to be gun sights are in bounds, however.

What do you think? Is she partly to blame for what happened?

... General David Petraeus?!?

Look, Barbara Walters, you can't make a fluff-filled list of people who simply made headlines in 2010 - asking Sarah Palin about her daughter dancing and Justin Bieber about a photographed kiss - and suddenly then ask us to take you seriously as a journalist.

But that's the exact transition Walters tried to make on last night's 10 Most Fascinating People of 2010.

J. Lo and Babs

J. Lo was one hit single away from out-fascinating David Petraeus.

She prattled us about American Idol with Jennifer Lopez and talked fist-pumping with the cast of Jersey Shore, only to then name the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan as the Most Fascinating Person of 2010.

"In life, it seems, there are people who break things and people who fix them. This man is a fixer,” the host said of Petraeus.

Still, as much as we respect and admire the General, based on the previous guests that ranked immediately before him, we can't help but wonder: if The Situation had hooked up with one fewer grenade, might he have earned the top spot?

Justin Bieber is adorable, talented, beloved and, according to Barbara Walters, fascinating.

He also comes across as more mature than his 81-year old interviewer in the clip below.

As one of this ABC host's 10 Most Fascinating People of the Year, Bieber sits down with Walters on a special that airs tomorrow night. Among other topics, she grills him on the photo snapped earlier this year of Justin making out with Jasmine Villegas.

In response, Bieber just shrugs and says: "I was just kissing her. That's about it... I think every 16-year-old kisses a girl, right? So that's nothing out of the ordinary."

Watch Walters try, and fail, to make Justin squirm:

Today on The View, Barbara Walters showed an outtake of her interview with Sarah Palin from her forthcoming 10 Most Fascinating People of 2010 special.

The former Alaska Governor laughs off any Dancing With the Stars / Bristol Palin conspiracy theories, praising her 20-year-old daughter's work ethic.

As Todd Palin sits awkwardly on the chair next to her in ventriloquist dummy mode, Sarah also says why she'll never personally be on the program ...

As she does at the conclusion of every year, Barbara Walters has compiled a list of the world's Most Fascinating People.

Really just a rundown of those who have been in the news (seriously, we all love Betty White, but does a single reader find her "fascinating?"), the following celebrities made the cut:

  • Taking Jesse Back!
  • Close Up of Kate
  • Kneeling on Stage

As you can see, only eight spots are filled. That's because the ABC host will reveal the final two on her December 9 special. Who do you think they'll be?

This group of eight has been in clubs, bar fights, mug shots, tight clothes, other reality shows, South Park spoofs, tabloid photos, and even Jasmine Waltz.

Now the Jersey Shore cast has landed on Barbara Walters' Top 10 Most Fascinating People of 2010. No word if Barbara plans to retire after this shark jumping.

The guidos and guidettes will tape a segment for Walters' special this week, with the 18th annual 10 Most Fascinating People to be unveiled December 9.

Season 2 Jersey Shore Cast

FASCINATING: That's one way to describe Jersey Shore.

The Jersey Shore cast somehow joins the ranks of First Lady Michelle Obama, pop star Lady Gaga, rapper Jay-Z and actors Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.

Ridiculous as it seems that a bunch of crass, uneducated, white trash idiots partying and f*%king each other is "fascinating," their cultural impact is unquestioned.

More than 6 million viewers watch the MTV hit every week, more than some network shows get. Also, Kate Gosselin was on the list last year. Come on.

We just hope The Situation asks Barbara if she's DTF.

He hasn't officially apologized, but Adam Lambert has admitted that his performance at the American Music Awards went too far.

Still, when asked by Barbara Walters - during her 10 Most Fascinating People of 2009 special that airs tomorrow night on ABC - if he'd change the rauchy dance moves or same-sex kiss from that night, Lambert replied:

"No. No regrets."

He continued:

"To be honest with you, adrenaline is a funny, funny thing... I got really excited. You can't plan everything - if I did a performance exactly how I rehearsed it, it would be so boring."

That may be true, but it also would not have gotten Lambert banned from ABC for a couple events. He will be featured on the network twice this week, however: first, in this special; and the following morning on The View.

As for those that have judged Lambert, based on his AMA rendition, he has a message for the haters:

"I don't think that you can really...  jump to conclusions about me as an artist based on one performance. That's an ignorant thing to do."

A couple of strong women and (mostly) popular figures, Kate Gosselin and Sarah Palin, lead Barbara Walters' list of the 10 Most Fascinating People of the year.

For better or worse, the reality TV mother of eight and former governor / V.P. nominee are certainly fascinating. You just can't look away from what they do.

Same is true of car wrecks on the other side of the highway, but no matter. Few get people talking like Kate and Sarah - or a certain new big name in music.

Controversial American Idol alum Adam Lambert, whose music and sexually charged performances make him a tabloid staple, is another member of the list.

Red Carpet Lambert

Adam, Sarah and Kate: Three of 2009's Most Fascinating.

Singer/rumored hermaphrodite Lady Gaga, annoying NFL star Brett Favre, Tyler Perry, and Fox News personality Glenn Beck made the top 10 of '09 as well.

Perhaps the most intriguing inclusion? Jenny Sanford, the wife of philandering South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, will also be interviewed by Barbara Walters.

The special, Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2009, airs on ABC December 9. Who is your most fascinating person of 2009?

The way things are going lately, we'd think Rachel Uchitel and Jaimee Grubbs would be in a dead heat for the #1 spot, with Levi Johnston a close second.

With the campaign spotlight long gone, Bristol Palin may be less inclined to marry teenage baby daddy Levi Johnston than she espoused a few months ago.

John McCain is taking a similar approach to visiting The View.

The former presidential candidate's appearance on the talk show in September was one of the more interesting moments from the 2008 election season.

Throughout the interview, the GOP hopeful was on the hot seat, getting grilled on (among other things) why he chose Sarah Palin as his running mate.

During the broadcast, McCain actually held it together and seemed to be in good spirits. But was that an act? And is the Arizona senator holding a grudge?

According to reports, Barbara Walters recently saw McCain at a Washington event.

During the encounter, Walters expressed hope that the vanquished candidate would return to her TV show. Quoth the snapping senator: "Not anytime soon."

Such an obvious diss should give the ladies something to gab about - and Elisabeth Hasselbeck to get fired up defending him - for at last a few months.

Poor McCain. Either he's mad at talk show hosts or they're mad at him. Remember his epic feud with Letterman? Guess that's part of being a maverick.
