Among other entertainment industry heavyweights, Anne Hathaway, Martin Sheen, Jane Lynch and Ellen DeGeneres signed an open letter sponsored by Freedom to Marry, a New York-based group promoting same-sex marriage rights.

Just weeks after President Obama's administration announced it would no longer legally defend the Defense of Marriage act, his supporters want him to go further.

"Whether to end discrimination in marriage is a question America has faced before. It is a question that calls for clarity from the president," the letter reads. "We ask you to join us, and the majority of Americans, who support the freedom to marry."

The letter was also signed by moguls David Geffen and Bob Wright; former NAACP chairman Julian Bond; and Facebook co-founders Chris Hughes and Sean Parker.

Hughes, who is gay, worked for Obama's campaign in 2008, heading its enormously successful social media efforts. But in 2011, the climate is a bit different.

About an hour into the 2011 Academy Awards telecast, co-host James Franco walked on to the stage in a dress.

To viewers, this was likely seen as either an act of desperation or hilarity, as he also tossed in a joke about Charlie Sheen, turning to Anne Hathaway and quipping: ”You got to wear a tuxedo so I wore this. The weird thing is I just got a text message from Charlie Sheen.”

Cue... laughter? Or eye rolling?

Normally, some might consider it a fashion faux pas to wear red on the red carpet, but if you're Anne Hathaway, you can pull it off with flying colors.

The Oscar host looked absolutely ravishing last night. Scarlett Johansson, on the other hand? Well, at least one person thought she looked amazing.

Her dress is gorgeous, but the actress' hair gives the impression she got it on in a limousine on the way there. Major JBF hair, ScarJo. We like it.

Think it's easy to host the Academy Awards?

There's a reason why the show has burned through so many emcees over the last couple decades, with such stalwarts as David Letterman and Jon Stewart failing to meet expectations in the eyes of many.

No offense to The Oscars. And we still adore you, Glee. But Anne Hathaway has signed on for the role of a lifetime.

The Academy Awards host will portray Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, the next installment of the Batman franchise that will hit theaters in 2012. The upcoming Glee guest star beat out Jessica Biel and Keira Knightley, among others, for the part.

Says director Christopher Nolan: “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

Warner Brothers also revealed that Tom Hardy will play Bane in the blockbuster. But back to Hathaway: Will she make a good Catwoman?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has confirmed its offer to these stars, with producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer saying:

"James Franco and Anne Hathaway personify the next generation of Hollywood icons - fresh, exciting and multi-talented. We hope to create an Oscar broadcast that will both showcase their incredible talents and entertain the world."

Both actors are starring in new films, with Franco considered a front-runner for Best Actor based on his portrayal of Aron Ralston in 127 Hours.

With Hathaway and Franco officially accepting the honor, it will mark the first time in history a pair of current, mainstream movie stars host the ceremony. What do you think of this choice?

Anne Hathaway took a break from posing topless this week to make a pitch to Fox: the actress wants to be on Glee!

But Hathaway has already done the work for creator Ryan Murphy. She already knows what character she wants to portray:

"I would want to be Kurt's aunt," she told reporters this week. "I have thought about it... I would like to pitch to Murphy right now that I go on as Kurt's aunt, his mother who is deceased's younger sister."
