  • Rima Fakih: The Politically Correct Miss USA? (6/4/2010)

This article is nonsense. Miss America is a diplomatic position as much as anything else, so it's not unreasonable to expect the contestants to display tact and diplomacy when giving their responses. I believe it is possible to score highly while disagreeing with the judges. It is obviously a lot more difficult, which is precisely why a contestant who can pull it off effectively, will score a lot higher than someone who simply reflects the views of the judges. Arizone didn't do this. "I welcome hard-working law abiding immigrants to this country " would have been a far more tactful way of saying "I am against illegal immigration". "I am grateful for the checks and balances our founding fathers instituted when they framed the constitution, including the right of states to legislate" says the same thing as "I am a huge believer in State's rights" which came across as somewhat militant. Had she begun by emphasising the points of agreement, ie "I would be sad if I believed the Arizona legislators were intentionally introducing a system of racial profiling which I do not support because.. " it would have allowed her to maintain at least *some* eye contact with the judges. You can't expect to score well in the personality stakes if you don't even have the courtesy to look the judge in the eye. It was rude and embarassing and in complete contrast with Michigan, whose warmth and charm won the day.
  • Rima Fakih Crowned Miss USA! (6/4/2010)

She's so stunningly beautiful, intelligent, sophisticated and mostly, natural. No wonder the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th runners up told Trump he made the right choice. Watch her win Miss Universe.
