Free from any legal worries, Fantasia Barrino is setting her sights on the next step of her career: movie stardom.

The former American Idol champion has signed on to portray Mahalia Jackson on the big screen, a real-life, late American gospel singer and civil rights advocate.

It's Fantasia!

Jackson rose from poverty in New Orleans to a successful career as a gospel artist. She was a well-known, ardent supporter of Martin Luther King, Jr, and an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She died  1982.

Fantasia won't be the first American Idol finalist to attempt a transition to movies. It's gone rather well for Jennifer Hudson, wouldn't you say?

"I am quite down-to-earth for such an eccentric person." - Lady Gaga

With the release of "Born This Way" less than 24 hours away, Vogue officially released its March cover featuring the fabulous Lady Gaga this morning.

Despite her theatrical shows, outrageous getups, wild antics, obsession with blood and semen and so on, she says she's a family-oriented good girl.

Lady Gaga Vogue Cover: 2011

The Italian-American New York native says she prefers to be called by her real name, Stefani, in the bedroom for example. She also cares deeply for her parents.

“I obsess about his health,” she said about her father. “I’m very Italian. I call him every day. I ask my mother if he’s been smoking. They are in their 50s now."

"They still live in the same apartment on the Upper West Side," Gaga tells Vogue. "Nothing has changed at all since I have become a star. I am a real family girl."

"When it comes to love and loyalty, I am very old-fashioned."

Just one of many reasons why we love her ... opulent robes, pink wigs and all. Click to enlarge Vogue's Lady Gaga pictures below and tell us what you think:

Vanessa Hudgens tells the latest issue of Details that she and Zac Efron are "still friends." Despite their shocking split two months ago, the actress won't even rule out a reconciliation, saying:

"Who knows what the future will bring. We're figuring things out."

If that's the case, Hudgens sends a clear message to Efron - who got very cozy last week with Teresa Palmer - in the following pictorial: Come hither...

The extortion investigation of Mel Gibson's ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva drags on, with the case still not turned over to the L.A. District Attorney.

This has left prosecutors "frustrated" as they look to move forward with the domestic violence case against Mel and the extortion case against Oksana.

Until files are turned over, the D.A. can't file charges or drop the case.

Moksana

While the investigation was said to be "substantially done" last week, prosecutors now don't think they will receive the case until next week, if that.

"The amount of hours the Sheriff's Department spent investigating Oksana is mind boggling," said one source. As is the fact that Mel ever dated her.

Sheriff's officials have spent months investigating claims that she, or someone close to her, tried to trade her silence in exchange for Gibson's cash.

The two are also in a bitter custody dispute over one-year-old Lucia.

Howard Stern loves women with large breasts and little personality, so it should come as no surprise that he's coming to the defense of Kim Kardashian.

Earlier this week, the reality star was called on stage by Prince during a concert at Madison Square Garden. She proceeded to freeze, stand around like a mannequin and get dismissed from the spotlight.

But Stern, a fan of Prince as an artist, blames the musician for this embarrassing incident.

"Apparently she's supposed to dance like a stripper for him and she just stood there not knowing what to do," Stern said on his radio show yesterday. "He throws her off the stage because she can't read f--king Prince's mind. He's a bulls--t artist. I'm done with him."

Concluding by labeling Prince as a "scumbag," Stern said "he seems to be an arrogant asshole lately."

That may be true, but let's remember: Courteney Cox has a career because Bruce Springstein summoned her to the stage during a performance of "Dancing in the Dark." Kim could have shown the world a spontaneous, fun-loving side if she had responded in similar fashion to this sitcom star.

Instead, treating the opportunity like a professional athlete, she blew it.

Lindsay Lohan is scared of prison.

Most of us are. Most of us also steer clear of theft, DUI and other brushes with the law on a daily basis as a result, but most of us aren't Lindsay Lohan.

While insisting she's innocent in the great necklace heist of 2011, she wants to plea bargain her felony grand theft case ASAP to avoid being locked up.

After berating Lohan in court yesterday, Judge Keith Schwartz scheduled a hearing for February 23, so the lawyers can talk about plea bargaining the case.

Will Lindsay weasel out of another legal jam? [Photo: Pacific Coast News]

Lindsay is willing to plead guilty to make the case go away, provided she does not get jail or prison time. The prosecutor, however, wants jail time.

She may also be able to cut a deal with the judge, cutting the D.A. out of the picture. In exchange for a guilty plea, the judge may be receptive.

It's also common in cases such as this for the judge to reduce the offense to a misdemeanor if Lindsay Lohan stays out of trouble for 12 months.

LOL. As if that's happening. In any case, it will be interesting to see if she cuts a deal or proceeds with a trial in a bid to prove her "innocence."

Thoughts, based on what you know of the case and Lohan?

See, people, helping those less fortunate does pay off...

Sources confirm to Us Weekly that jaw-dropping beauty Scarlett Johansson is dating legendary actor Sean Penn, with the initial spark between the pair going off due to the latter's humanitarian efforts in Haiti.

"Scarlett first reached out to Sean when she was planning to visit Haiti with Oxfam," says a source. "She knew Sean was living there in a tent and turned to him for advice."

  • Penn, Sean

Describing the actress as "smitten" with the Oscar winner, this insider says the pair - who are 24 years apart in age - first hooked up last month when Johansson was staying at the Chateau Marmont and filming We Bought a Zoo.

Both stars split from their spouses over the last year. Penn called it quits with Robin Wright in August, while Scarlett and Ryan Reynolds divorced in December.

UPDATE: Says the actress' rep: "Scarlett and Sean are not dating - they have been friends for years. Nothing more, nothing less. They have been talking over the last few months regarding Haiti Relief and Scarlett's upcoming trip to Haiti as Oxfam's Global Ambassador."

Ashley Williamson, the reported new plaything of Gary Shirley, told police she believes Amber Portwood slashed the tires of her car twice in recent weeks.

That's on top of the threatening telephone calls she claims Amber made.

Teen Mom Stars Destroyed!

Williamson's accusations come just one day after the lifting of the restraining order barring Amber from contact with Gary, the father of her daughter.

Ironically, Portwood told police she was the victim here, after receiving threatening, sexually vulgar calls from her former fiance the previous day.

She could hear Ashley Williamson in the background, as well.

Williamson says Portwood was "delusional" and that she wasn’t even with Shirley at the time. Follow the jump to read the full text of her complaint:

Does American Idol the next Adam Lambert on its hands?

It's difficult not to make such a comparison upon hearing James Durbin sing, but the aspiring contestant arrived for his audition in San Francisco last night with a very different backstory from that of the season eight finalist.

Durbin couldn't hold back his emotion when talking about his son, or even when belting out a version of "Dream On." This is a young man whose father died of an overdose when he was nine, and who has been diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome. It's emotional, impressive, stuff. Watch now.

Durbin is a rumored member of this season's top 40, along with other San Francisco golden ticket recipients Brittany Mazur, Stefano Langone and Julie Zorrilla.
