Unless you're simply going by the impressive audition and rumor that he's made it to the top 24 on this year's American Idol, just like the aforementioned early favorite on the show.

But David Cook has a fresh look and sound, as proven last night when he turned Bon Jovi's classic "Livin on a Prayer" into his own, unique serenade of the judges.

It worked. Simon, Randy and Paula all moved David on to Hollywood, anointing him as the only serious contender from an otherwise lackluster group of auditions in Omaha.

David Cook wants to be the next Chris Daughtry. It's early, but: so far, so good.

As American Idol auditions move to Miami tonight, we yearn for a better crop of singers and/or weirdos. Last night didn't have enough of either.

Matthew McConaughey has already been named the Sexiest Man Alive. He now hopes to earn a Father of the Year award alongside gorgeous girlfriend Camila Alves.

"I think he will be an incredible dad," McConaughey's Fool's Gold costar Kate Hudson said recently. "I think because people see Matthew always out doing something whether [it's] out dancing in a bar or being on the beach or taking a hike with some crazy bandana on, I think that, like anything, they take their image and what they want somebody else to be and then they just run with that."

The occasionally shirtless McConaughey noted that the apple won't fall far from the tree:

"Make no doubt about it. My kid will dance. He will be on the beach and he will be taking hikes with a wild bandana on."

She's on a downward spiral, and Amy Winehouse's mother, Janis Winehouse, is prepping for the worst for her troubled daughter.

"I've already come to terms with her being dead," she tells The Mirror.

"I've steeled myself to ask her what ground she wants to be buried in, which cemetery. Because drugs will get her if she stays on this road."

Amy Winehouse, 24, checked into rehab last Thursday after British tabloid The Sun released a video of her apparently using a crack pipe.

One wonders if Amy is stashing crack in that beehive.

"I've known for a long time that my daughter has problems," Janis said.

"But seeing it on screen, on video truly rammed it home. I realize my daughter could be dead within the year."

Janis Winehouse said her daughter will be honored at next month's Grammy Awards, "but part of me thinks she won't be alive by then.

"I look at Heath Ledger and Britney Spears. She's on their path. It's like watching a car crash - this person throwing all these gifts away."

While the cause of Ledger's death is still unknown, you can't argue that Amy and Britney Spears are on a downward trajectory and need help.

Now, if only we could get the former porn star to eat some of it.

Days after vehemently denying reports that they broke up, or at least almost broke up, Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo enjoyed a romantic date at the West Hollywood Italian restaurant Il Sole on Monday night.

Such a romantic date that it included eight friends, including Simpson's former bitch Cacee Cobb, her beau, Donald Faison and Simpson's stylist, Ken Paves.

"Jessica had no makeup on and her hair was thrown to the side in a bun," a witness reports. "She seemed very comfortable and laid back with Tony and not at all worried about looking good or impressing him."

Another spy adds: "Tony couldn't stop touching Jessica!"

At one point, as Jessica Simpson chatted up Cacee Cobb, Tony Romo, "put his finger under her chin and turned her face towards him and gave her a long kiss while holding her face in his palm," the witness reports.

The PDA continued during dinner (Jessica Simpson had pasta with parmesan cheese and drank Veuve Clicquot; Tony Romo sipped on red wine).

"They ate off each other's plates!" the onlooker tells Us.

While Cobb and Paves chatted (topics included, naturally, Britney Spears shaving her head), "Jess and Tony were whispering in each others ears and having private conversations," the witness adds.

"A few times it looked like Jessica had to fill [Tony Romo] in on some of the inside jokes between her and her old friends. She would tell him a story and then rest her head on his shoulder."

Afterward, they hit up Metal Skool karaoke night at the Key Club in L.A., where Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson serenaded each other. Says the spy:

"He was singing directly to her â€" and she was on cloud nine!"

Sounds similar to the romantic date between Eli Manning and Abby McGrew in N.Y., only he's actually playing in the Super Bowl next Sunday!

It has been reported for weeks that Britney Spears' family, friends and some of the professionals in her life have been planning a "creative way" to deal with her mental problems. Finally, it looks like the time has arrived.

If it happens, TMZ reports, it should happen this week.

Last night, Brit's mom, Lynne Spears, her father, Jamie Spears, "cousin" Alli Sims, creepy manager Sam Lutfi and boyfriend Adnan Ghalib all showed up at Britney's house and were all there at the same time.

Britney's mom and dad (among others) have known for months that a bipolar disorder - not substance abuse - is at the root of her mental problems.

They cannot involuntarily commit her (impossible under the circumstances) and Britney has refused to voluntarily enter a hospital or even undergo an evaluation for the problem. But now a new plan is underway.

Britney had not spoken to her mother for a while, but last night, Britney and Lynne Spears (along with Sam Lutfi, background) left her gated compound at one point and went to the drug store, so they are now interacting at least.

An intervention has been in the planning stages for well over a month. It should begin to unfold if Britney Spears cooperates... but that's a big if.

All we can do is wait, watch and hope.

Reports that Kwame Kilpatrick had a woman other than his wife with him at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, N.C., before speaking at the Martin Luther King Prayer Breakfast left event organizers disappointed Friday.

The embattled Detroit Mayor and scandal extraordinaire was reportedly in the western North Carolina city with some woman named Carmen Slowsky.

Reportedly, Kwame Kilpatrick and Carmen Slowsky had champagne and a whirlpool bath together at a cost of more than $500.

A copy of the hotel invoice shows a stay arranged for two. A prosecutor in Michigan launched an investigation Friday into allegations that Kilpatrick lied under oath about an affair with top aide Christine Beatty.

Kwame Kilpatrick is married, and news of a scandalous extramarital affair with his chief of staff, Christine Beatty, had surfaced in Detroit recently.

Kilpatrick has said the affair was over, but the political damage lingers.

Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy said she picked Kwame Kilpatrick up at the airport, saw him at the breakfast and again at dinner, and he was alone each time. But questions about Carmen Slowsky continue to dog the mayor.

"It's very disappointing to have this happen," she said. "Kwame Kilpatrick's speech was a chance to energize the community around mentoring and tutoring our youth. The event was meant to focus on Dr. King's legacy and now the focus is this."
