I'm sure Pierce Brosnan loves his wife, but if Keely truly loves him she'll do something about her obesity. And she is obese. Brosnan's first wife died a premature death from ovarian cancer. How sad that his current wife is not risking the same ends (obesity increases the odds of many ailments, including cancer) but has other miserable fat people egging her on.
Candice, when you were typing those insulting comments, were you at the same time dribbling cookie crumbs all over the keyboard? I somehow suspect you were. When you see another fat person, you see validation. Healthy people see a sad, unhealthy body that doesn't have to be that way.

In a day and age where obesity is a growing problem for not just adults but children as well, shouldn't a public figure strive to set a healthy example? And what does it say if an advocate for the environment appears to be a glutton? Can a person like that really preach about conserving resources when she's obviously eating an amount that would feed several people?

And you cannot just assume that she is unhealthy because she is overweight. I recently lost a lot of weight, but even when I was very heavy, I was not in danger of having diabetes, my blood pressure was low, my cholesterol was good, etc.
And I am shocked by the various posters who indicate that Mr. Brosnan would be validated in leaving her or that he can't possibly love her, and that men don't really love their women who are overweight, it is just a fetish, that fat people are in hell, etc. So much vitriol and hatred ... Just because a fat person doesn't have problems at the moment doesn't mean they aren't around the corner. A smoker might not have cancer or emphysema at the moment but aren't they more likely to get it? I think that is what people have been trying to say.
Men who love their wives still love them even if they are fat but I bet if you asked my husband or Pierce Brosnan or any man whether he preferred a fit wife to a fat one he'd tell you he'd want his woman to be healthy and in shape. There is no reason to be unhealthily thin OR fat. Unfortunately, Z, people like you obviously can't deal with the truth so you throw out the red herring of aneorexia in an effort to prop up a case that's hanging like your spare tire.

Hey Angela,
Thanks for the encouragement....and I don't typically get snippy about being anorexic and thinner than someone unless that someone has pushed my buttons by acting superior herself.
It's difficult to want to recover because even though media and culture appears to be critical of too-thin celebrities, they don't seem to be as cruel as when they report on some overweight celeb. When you're too thin, it's like "look, the poor thing is wasting away". Too fat and "She's really let herself go, the slob".
Victoria, despite the comment that you're 'sympathetic' with some fat people who struggle, your choice of words and presumptuous remarks (like someone dribbling crumbs on her keyboard as she typed) leads me to believe otherwise. Look, I agree with much of what you wrote--overweight can be unhealthy, unattractive and should not be 'promoted'. But you're outright mean about it and there's no purpose for that other than to insult and hurt others. The fact that you chose to express your opinion in such a condescending manner--repeatedly--says a lot about you.
Whenever anyone came to Keely's defense, you automatically assumed they must be fat and currently stuffing their 'pie hole' with junk. You didn't even read my first comment well enough to see that I have anorexia, you automatically assumed some 'fatty' was making the comment.
Now who's guilty of seeing things in extremes?
Victoria Says:

Z,
Obesity - not anorexia - is one of the biggest health issues facing this country, and it's seeing an alarming increase among our youth.
When someone chimes in and implies that anorexia is somehow the end road of weight loss is not just irresponsible but ridiculous.
It strikes me as ironic that those wringing their hands over how the "obsession with weight" can lead to anorexia are so willing to dismiss the fact that obesity advocates and/or apologists are providing people the excuse to continue to stuff their faces.
If the body image issue were as dangerous as you say, why are there more fat kids today than thin ones? It would appear that those encouraging people to "be happy with themselves" are winning - to the detriment of our bloated youth. So congratulations, guys. Good work. As I said, misery loves company and now you have a whole new generation of fat people to join you at the table.
But is this really a surprise? I think not given our culture, and Keely is a prime example of what is wrong with it.
Rather than use her public image to TRULY advocate for an healthy, environmental lifestyle that focuses on minimizing consumption, she's out there writing articles about how bright scarves and other accessories can draw attention away from a woman's large middrift.
If she's going to speak out, should she be doing that or should she be doing what Lisa wisely suggested - become a voice for a weight-loss regimen, and return to where she used to be which was neither too fat OR too thin. Because regardless of what you say, Z, aneorexia and obesity are not the only two choices. There is a healthy in between weight we should all strive for.
Z Says:
January 31st, 2008 10:01 AM
You're right that here are more fat than anorexic people. You're right for sure. Anorexia is a disease that affects only about 1% of the population. Having said that, it's also the most lethal mental illness and one of the most difficult disorders to recover from. Anorexics are anorexic for life.
And you're right that there is a healthy in between (I'm so messed up now that the healthy in-between seems fat to me and I'm afraid to even be there). You can still tell people they need to take action and lose weight without being mean about it, though. One nasty comment thrown at someone might kill them. That's my only worry (it almost happened to actress Tracey Gold). I'm stuck with anorexia and used to promote it--for a while, I was pro-ana and even meaner than you (EVERYONE was fat to me). Now, the last thing I want to do is cause someone else to fall into the same fear-filled hole I'm in.
Anyway I agree with you. I just didn't like the way you expressed it. The wrong words could really hurt someone.
