I like her but I think she should be booted off. One is not suppose to be a signed artist. Then there is the guy who won star search, he shouldnt be there either. But I am rather disappointed in the guys that they picked this year.

  2. Gina Says:

I think they should kick her ass off that show!
    Carley STEP DOWN!

  3. Tonya D Says:

It is AMERICAN idol not Irish Idol. She needs to be voted off this first week!

  4. Theres Says:

When I first heard Carly on the AI auditions, I immediately loved her and was rooting for her. Then I saw that she had a record deal before and I wasn't sure that it was fair to the other contestants. Upon further investigation I realized how badly that whole situation went. I must have been hard for her to have her album fail so badly and come so close only to lose it all. I think she is a better person for it and deserves all of us to look at her with fresh eyes and give her a chance. Afterall, she has a beautiful voice. I am sure we could pick apart other contestants if we wanted to.

  5. Nancy Sanders Says:

I was under the impression one of the rules of the game was you could not have had a record deal in the past. Yes there have been some that have published their own cd's but they have not had a major contract. Obviously this woman has and under any name she should be disqualified. I have always liked AI as it gave the little guy a chance to be discovered. She was already discovered and if her album busted then so be it but she had her chance, she may deserve another chance, but not on AI, If you die hards want to give her another chance then start requesting her music on the radio stations since she already has a couple albums out there, that is her second chance, not in an amature contest. Carly do the right thing and step down, you know you should never have auditioned for this contest.

  6. RUSSO Says:

JUST SIMPLE ,TWO THINGS ARE AGAINST HER TO COMPETE ,SHE IS A PROFESSIONAL AND BESIDES THAT SHE IS NOT AMERICAN ,SO SHE SHOULD BE BOOTED OFF.

  7. Hollie Pruett Says:

I thought that the whole point of American Idol was for unknown unsigned artists. I am appalled tha they are actually going to let her compete, and what's worse, they are already building her up to the American public as a serious contender and or winner. I would really like to see her get voted off the show if she isn't disqualified

  8. Jennifer McCann Says:

I think you guys should do some homework before passing judgement. Some people are saying "they didn't let my friend through because she had an agent" Well it is well known that if you have an agent or an ACTIVE contract you cannot compete on american Idol. I think that if carly wins american idol, gets her time on tv, and actual song writers and a different label she might do better than 400+ albums sold they made the mistake of trying to get her out there when the teen scene was locked down with brit and etc. If proffessional back up singers and ect can compete so can she. I feel sorry for her that she is going to get such a backlash for this.

  9. Neelie Says:

I am sorry I like her, but maybe she should go and call back a kid named Josiea who is living in his car.... That kid really deserves a break.

  10. BJ Wayman Says:

I think she should be given the booth she has had her chance. If she is allowed to stay It will be the downfall of American Idol

  11. jennifer Says:

The only rules Idol has is that a contestant may not have a 'current' contract with a record label. Carly does not. She did not blow her first chance at fame - MCA records blew it and that mis-handling of her original career was the subject of a huge article in the Wall Street Journal. Idol has never stated that this show was exclusively for amateurs - just that it was OPEN to amateurs and that the possibility of winning was up to the American public. That will also be the test that Carly has to pass. If you don't like her, don't vote for her.

  12. Pauly Says:

unbelievable, if she had a record deal kick her off!!! so totally unfair and to the one who would vote for her, spell vote right......

  13. Josie Says:

Check it out. Kelly had a record deal before Idol and so did Taylor. Why is there so much hype about this chick? Give it a rest. I think there are contestants who are better than she is.

  14. jen Says:

she's not even american, tom??? she lives in america, and that's not enough? isn't that what you americans brag about??? being a free country and the country in which everyone has a chance? she's damned good, and had a record deal in the past, not now......get over it!!!!

  15. jen Says:

it's americans like tom and russo that give fellow americans a bad name....be a little more accepting of others for a change! it won't kill you!

  16. Big Ben Says:

Come on kids.. it's not like a big chunk of your former idols that you have latched your dreams onto haven't been in similar situations. Just a real quick Google search would show that Constantine was in a band prior that had a record, and Taylor Hicks had made two records previously.
Point one - the whole process has been tainted from the start. Sorry to burst the bubble. A network like Fox likely would never have agreed to the show in the first place if there wasn't a guarantee of some quality on the show - and the 19 Management couldn't completely trust that they would 'discover' a new talent. There have been at least one or two 'ringers' each year of Idol. Agreed, Carly has a little higher profile that the previous ones, but since Idol is in a slow decline, someone probably decided that it was time. Carly auditioned in 2005, and was denied for 'visa reasons' - it was probably more likely due to the realization that this 'scandal' would stop the huge show in it's tracks if she were picked. Three years later, after a disappointing season last year, and a cooler reception at media outlets for each subsequent winner, they're getting desperate, and they decided to test the waters.
Point two - 2.2 million might sound like an enormous amount to you, but in the music business, it's not an outrageous amount. As far as Carly 'blowing it', very little of an artist's success or failure has to do with the artist - it has more to do with relationships between managers and record label executives, and big media outlets - namely Clear Channel, which owns probably every station in your town. The trouble with Carly's album was that they signed her to be a Britney or Christina, then made a record that was more musically and lyrically like an Alanis Morrisette - then worked it to Radio Disney and Nickelodeon for the tweens. Then, that kind of image wasn't going to sell at alternative - no matter the quality of the music. Truth is, it was a decent record.
Bottom line - is it wrong that she be on the show? Probably, but if you are going to single her out, then you are hypocritical, and you would have to eliminate at least one previous winner for the same reason.
If you're going to run around with the same attitude that you did when you found out about the Easter Bunny or WWE, then blame the shows producers, who have been doing this from the start, and will plead ignorance when cornered - they're the ones who deserve the anger. Or, watch the show and enjoy it, and don't get wrapped up in the 'details'.

  17. Stu Says:

Now in their 7th season, American Idol is running out of talent. How long can they keep doing this show for? They might as well bring on some formerly signed talent.

  18. bob Says:

American Idol is not for those who have had record deals before. If she wasnt famous before, most likely she wont be this time around. Plus she has no star factor. she has an amazing voice this is true, but its AMERICAN idol not IRELAND idol. I think it was redic that they allowed her on the show

  19. alicia Says:

PERSONALLY I THINK CARLY SMITHSON IS AN AMAZING SINGER! SHE SHOULD HAVE THE CHANCE JUST LIKE ANYONE ELSE, WHY NOT? BECAUSE SHE WASNT BORN IN AMERICA?? SHE'S LIVED IN AMERICA FOR YEARS AND HAS A HUSBAND WHO IS AMERICAN! IS THAT NOT GOOD ENOUGH!! COME ON PEOPLE GET OVER IT!! EVEN IF SHE DOSENT WIN AMERICAN IDOL I HOPE AND THINK SHE'LL MAKE IT BIG OUT OF THIS! SHE DID HAVE AN ALBUM OUT BEFORE BUT SHE DIDNT MAKE IT SO WHY SHOULDN'T SHE TRY AGAIN?? IT'S HER LIFE LONG DREAM!! SHOULD SHE JUST GIVE UP?? ANYONE WHO IS AGAINST CARLY IS JUST JEALOUS OF HER AMAZING TALENT! I WISH CARLY THE BEST OF LUCK AND I HOPE SHE WINS BUT IF NOT I HOPE SHE GOES THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH A RECORD DEAL THAT I'M SURE SHE'LL GET!
WOOOOOO!!!!! GO CARLY!!!!! YOUR AMAZING!!!!! STAY STRONG!!!

  20. Nick Says:

You all are retarded. There are like 5 other contestants in this years competition and 10 or 12 from past seasons who already had their chance before American Idol. The competition is NOT for amateurs...amateurs can't sing. SHUT UP AND GET OVER IT. None of your business anyway!

  21. giri Says:

She does deserve a second chance, JUST NOT ON AMERICAN IDOL!!!

And not all amateurs can't sing! Remember Anthony Federof? He went as far as the top 4 and even now, he's got it good. True, Carly has a great voice, true, she deserves a chance, but HERE?!

WAKE UP people! Who knows who could have been there had Carly taken the honest route and didn't compete, eh?!

Who's chance did she take away? Who's dream did she break? Let's face it, if she didn't compete, we wouldn't think of her as so terrible. But since she did, why does everyone insist that she win?! Whatever happened to honesty and truth?

Many of you say, "Oh poor Carly! I honestly don't blame her!" What the heck?! She's taken away the dream of many others!

What would people give to be in her place right now? So freakin' much, guys. So freakin' much.

And to Alicia, Jealous?! Jealous?! Oh, I'm definitely jealous of the fact that she had a chance, blew it, and decided to take on a new last name and give people another reason to NOT watch American Idol. THANKS for the flattery!

  22. rod turkleson Says:

This is troubling - the show is NOT about second chances - I mean Robbie Williams last album tanked, does he get to compete on AI if he wants to?

  23. RecordMongul Says:

American Idol is about the little guy who doesn't have a chance. Carly had her second of fame. She sang on the big stage, had a record deal, music video etc. This show started out like the the Clay Aikens, Kelly Clarkson, who were regular people who unless there was AI they would go unknown. MCA records spent millions in trying to promote her and failed. The bottom line is hey know by getting her on AI she would be an instant favorite and they can recoup some of the money they invested in her. This is just hogwash.

  24. jezzi_ Says:

She didn't just take on a new last name, you fckn morons...she got married! Carly is awesome, she has a beautiful voice! She is NOT the only one on American Idol who was a professional in their past...ya'll might wanna internet check damn near EVERY male on the show currently, not to mention 1/2 of the ones from the past. Most every person in the Top 12 of every season has made some kinda record in their past.
I think that Carly is DEFINATELY the most talented female this year! As far as the men go....DAVID COOK IS THE NEXT AMERICAN IDOL!!! Just a couple thoughts I had to get off my chest.

  25. mama Says:

Idol is about the little guys coming out so give them a turn .She has a good voice but Carly shoud go home leet the little guys have there turn
