In a Constitutionally sound Democracy, this would have never happened. So I guess you could say, Spitzer put too much faith in the System in which he lives and works.
This is why we used to be considered a Country of Law's and not Men. Law's generally allow an individual to make choices, based on a set of guidelines which dictate the consequences of those actions, should one find him or herself in a position where they must answer questions. Its reasonably assumed that a man with responsibilities such as Spitzer, would take into account every aspect of the law, before getting involved in such an encounter based on the Law and jurisprudence.
If however, the laws as prescribed by a set standard of jurisprudence has been compromised, and individuals responsible for enforcing those laws, and also abiding by them, are they themselves circumventing those laws, then anything goes. We have moved from a Country of Laws, to a Country of men. Once that happens, its only a matter of time until absolute chaos takes hold, and the dream of what once was ends..

I'll give you an example that you can relate to.. You own a 2008 i135 BMW Twin Turbo, with Navigation. Your on the freeway, and the speed limit is 65mph..
Your car is very fast, and the twin turbo's can whip it to 110MPH on an open stretch of road, where it should be safe. 2 weeks later, your informed your drivers license has been revoked, and you will lose your job, since you need your license to do your work. You received the speeding ticket, cause the company that makes the navigation system, had a secret deal with the Governor of your state, to inform local authorities of anyone using this system, that goes over the posted speed limit. Your kids go to a private school, and must now go to a public school. The Governor received campaign donations from this company. In return, the company is allowed a tax break in your state.
Your wife's mother calls you a loser, and her dad grabs his shotgun!
