Social media has led to a social gaffe for Steve Martin, but he's taking full responsibility for his racist tweet and explaining in detail how it came about.

The actor, writer and former Oscar host, 68, was quipping with fans on Twitter when he apparently went too far when the topic turned to grammar.

Asked by a fan, "Is this how you spell lasonia?" Martin said: "It depends. Are you in an African-American neighborhood or at an Italian restaurant?"

Quickly realizing the line might offend, Martin deleted the tweet and apologized. In the face of criticism that ensued, he offered a longer explanation.

"I was riffing on Twitter, inviting people to ask me grammar questions," the funnyman wrote. "I replied with what I hoped were funny answers."

Steve Martin is under fire for tweeting a racist joke and offending many of his fans on Twitter, though he did delete it himself and apologize immediately.

The actor/comedian was having some fun on Twitter, answering questions about grammar rules, in what is one of his usual hilarious social media routines.

Then, things took a bad turn.

When one of the 68-year-old's followers when one asked him "Is this how you spell lasonia?" Martin then replied with this racially charged joke:

"It depends. Are you in an African-American neighborhood or at an Italian restaurant?"

As mentioned, Martin quickly took the tweet down, and apologized immediately.

Still, he received criticism from fans, and posted this: "I did apologize. But again, a second later I realized what an offensive thing I'd done. Deep bow."

The 68-year-old star resumed Tweeting a day later without mentioning the mishap.

So first the Justine Sacco debacle and now this. Remember when Twitter was just for sending non-stop updates about bathroom breaks or live-Tweeting Scandal?

Charlie Sheen is TAKING IT to Phil Robertson, saying he had better apologize for his crude anti-gay comments or face a media storm like he wouldn't believe.

As reported earlier, A&E made the controversial decision to suspend Robertson from Duck Dynasty largely because of the gay employees at the network.

Clearly, Sheen agrees with that move, but he's not satisfied.

Days after Phil likened called gays immoral sinners (among many other things, in much coarser wording) in GQ, the actor tore into him in a Twitter tirade:

  • MaSheen
  • Phil R.

"Hey Mallard brained Phil Robertson! you have offended and hurt so many dear friends of mine, who DO NOT have the voice or the outreach that I do."

"Well news flash shower-dodger, I will speak loudly and clearly for ALL of them."

"So, just when your desperately sub evolved ass thought the pressure was off, you are in the crosshairs of a MaSheen style media beat down."

(I'll try to keep the big words to a minimum as not to confuse you)."

Justine Sacco, a PR executive, is in major hot water after publicly tweeting a racist “joke” during a flight to Africa that went viral and didn't go over too well.

“Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!” she wrote.

Yeah ...

Justine Sacco is a New York-based communications director for media conglomerate IAC, which reps brands like OKCupid, Vimeo and CollegeHumor.

At least she was. IAC responded to the controversy in a statement last night:

“This is an outrageous, offensive comment that does not reflect the views and values of IAC. This is a very serious matter and we are taking appropriate action.”

The company, which is operated by billionaire media executive Barry Diller, noted that it had been unable to reach the in-flight “employee in question."

Brace yourselves, Beliebers... for the beginning of the end?

During an interview with a radio station in Los Angeles this week, Justin Bieber said he's going to retire. That's it. He's done. He's hanging up his microphone as soon as his next album drops in a week.

Most folks assume the artist is joking because... come on now. He's 19 years old. He may have gone through more downs than ups in 2013, but his popularity remains sky high.

He was also wearing sunglasses indoors during the interview and we just can't take anyone who does that seriously.

But Twitter has naturally reacted to the possibility of Bieber retiring in one of two ways: with extreme happiness... or with thoughts of suicide. Watch this video for a slew of contrasting reactions:

Beyonce went completely against the musical grain this morning, releasing a new album without a single word of promotion or hype.

Titled "BEYONCE," the visual CD simply dropped on to iTunes in time for holiday shopping and is complete with 14 tracks and 17 videos.

Think you're stunned and excited? Consider the following reactions on Twitter from a bunch of very famous folks:

Demi Lovato: "I'm literally FUH-REAKING OUT over this new #BEYONCE... The music vids?!!?! I CANT HANDLE THIS MUCH FIERENESS.... #NOJOKE #DYING. Sexiest woman ON THE PLANET... and WHO DIRECTED THESE VIDEOS?!!? #OBSESSED #BEYONCE #imightbeobsessedwithher #IWANTTOBEHER."

New Zealand's young phenom chanteuse Lorde and her rumored boyfriend, James Lowe, are reportedly dating, and with it, are being bullied on Twitter.

Mercilessly and cruelly, in fact. The cause for attack? It's not clear.

Some teens and 'tweens claim that Lorde, 17, recently took Justin Bieber and the five members of One Direction to task by referring to them as "ugly."

There is no record of her saying such things, but no matter.

Fans of Bieber and 1D have taken Twitter in a racist, vile attack on the "Royals" singer and James Lowe, the 24-year-old believed to be Lorde's boyfriend.

A sampling of some of the most disgusting comments:

Caran Johnson, a resident of Washington State known by her Twitter handle @ScanCouve, often live tweets traffic updates that she hears on her police scanner.

Last week, this unknowingly live tweeted her own husband's death on I-205.

Her husband, 47-year-old Craig Johnson, died after his vehicle inexplicably crossed from the northbound lanes into southbound I-205 and hit a pick-up truck.

He passed away before help arrived, but there was a gap between when his wife knew there had been an accident and finding out who was involved.

Amazingly, and tragically, it all played out on Twitter in real time:

Former celebrity Paris Hilton was on the receiving end of a Twitter hoax Thursday involving "her" supposed reaction to the death of Nelson Mandela.

"Paris" did not sound smart in her alleged Tweet, posted after Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95, and actual Paris is not happy about it whatsoever.

"RIP Nelson Mandela," the Photoshopped tweet purportedly from Hilton read. "Your 'I Have A Dream' speech was so inspiring. An amazing man."

  • Pretty Paris Hilton
  • Nelson Mandela Picture

That's right, Hilton was supposedly so brick stupid that she confused Mandela with Martin Luther King Jr., or so the fake tweet would have you believe.

Which more than a few people did ... which isn't all that surprising, considering the proliferation of hoaxes on Twitter, and the fact that it's Paris Hilton.

NOTE: Paris is a former celebrity who was like the Kim Kardashian of 2003-2007. The two were even friends, and their "career paths" are similar.

You could say the Paris Hilton sex tape was the Kim Kardashian sex tape before the Kim Kardashian sex tape was the Kim Kardashian sex tape.

Sunny Obama is serious about dog biscuits and he'll mow down a toddler to prove it!

Despite Michelle Obama's attempts to hold the excited dog back, the First Family's second Portuguese water dog knocked a two-year old girl over at a recent White House function.

No worries though. The little girl is fine and immediately set about petting the pup while the dog gave her kisses (i.e. licked the food crumbs from the girl's face. Probably. Toddlers are notoriously crumb-riddled.)

Knowledge that the little girl was okay did not stop the internet from erupting with hilarious and satirical tweets about the event.
